it's all about the ipod

i heard they put it on hold until they could put an iPod dock on it.

it's all about the ipod, right? right? :p

Hmm... I am new but...

I wonder if this could be related to the unused firewire controller found in the Mac Mini? It seems like great timing for Apple to extend its reach into the consumer entertainment arena. Everyone loves hidden bonuses.

I found this .TIFF the day I got iLife 05 back in January but didn't say anything about it because I thought it was common knowledge!

For those wondering what Asteroid will be like, I expect it to be fairly similar to the Edirol UA-25. I don't think it's ever been clear whether Asteroid is supposed to have USB or FireWire, or whether it has more than two input and/or output channels. But the UA-25 should give you the general idea.

I am in the marker for an all in one audio interface and it sounds like this will fit my needs. I was looking at, as others have mentioned, the M-Audio Mobile Pre, but it doesn't have XLR mic ports. All I need is some MIDI i/o, one or two 1/4 inch instrument in's, and an XLR mic in. Whatever else they add would be cool. I couple of sliders a few nobs, maybe the ability to work with other apps would be a bonus. I hope they don't price it more then $199, that would be the sweet spot for something like this. If they get it down to $149, I bet they won't be able to keep them on the shelves ( as they do with every other product they release).

Thanks for the link, that is pretty much what I am looking for. Slap the Apple logo on it, tweak a few things so that it works perfect with garageband/Logic and I would get it in a second.

It's both

See, that confused me. It says it is a MIDI interface. Yet when you read the info it has XLR and TRS 1/4". Which is it?

It's both, it's a multipurpose interface... it has MIDI for hooking up a keyboard to use in Logic Express or Garageband... which is very handy so that you can control the instruments and loops in Garageband. And it has audio inputs as well, so you can hook up some mics or other gear to record, and I assume some outputs to hook up some nice 1/4" or XLR speakers to monitor with.

Many audio interfaces come this way now... most of the Motu ones like the Motu 828 www.motu.com same with the newer Protools stuff like the Digi 002.

Anyhoo, comes in handy gives you the best of both worlds....

As for those waiting for the Asteroid... you only need wait if you are wanting an Apple logo, there are many audio/midi interfaces in the Sub $200 price range available now, that should work fine with Garageband... Like the Edirol posted early...

I've been waiting for the Asteroid since the rumor first came out. I have a little tube pre-amp that I picked up on eBay going to the 1/8" audio input and I manually switch between my XLR mic and my 1/4" guitar but the Asteroid would be a much cleaner solution.

Besides the obvious multi-input. Oh and if it really does have MIDI then I can ditch that cable too!

BTW I'm the target demographic for GarageBand, a guy who learned enough about music to hammer out a song but not enough to play in a club... much less having the patience/wallet for a professional app. I've probably recorded 25 songs since I got GarageBand, Apple rocks!

it would be nice to have something like this with a tv tuner, or just a tuner built into all macs

Anyone care to explain to me, in laymans terms, what this is all about and why it is significant? I'm not sure what astroid is or isn't.
Do you mean you want the "evidence" explained or the device?

Well the evidence that is shown is significant because it means that apple built in support for Asteroid into iLife, confirming it's existence to many of us.

The device is rumoured to allow a variety of digital music connections into your mac. These might include MIDI and XLR. MIDI is an ageing standard that's mainly used to connect MIDI keyboards. XLR is mainly (if not exclusively?) used for microphone connections.

Go back to Nov 03 for first info on this.

A long time ago I saw a website about the new Apple equipment that started the lawsuit against Apple Insider with Apple claiming Insider release data on the (DAW) audio hardware. Well I found that site today and the details from Nov. 15, 2003. To the person who claimed to be first this goes back a long way. This is far from new, the only new thing is when is Apple going to release it. The URL from 11/15/03 is below.

How to see the image

Type the following in a Terminal window to see the actual image (as one long line):

Code:
python -c "import binhex;binhex.hexbin('/Applications/GarageBand.app/Contents/Resources/asteroid.tiff','asteroid.tiff')"

This will give a file named asteroid.tiff in the current directory which you can view with Preview (or any other TIFF-viewer).

Why not just get the Edirol then? They make pretty good stuff, and it does work perfectly with GarageBand and Logic - and also Digital Performer, Cubase, Reason, Live, Peak, etc...

OS X is a great platform for audio from the software and hardware side, and it doesn't have to be Apple to work well.

MOTU, M-Audio, PreSonus (and more) also makes some nice FireWire interfaces.

God I love this rumor - everone gets so excited about it even though you can buy this exact thing at every Guitar Center and Apple store in the country already. Infact this could just be a internal audio device they used for testing Logic or GarageBand. I would be amazed if they branded a new product in such a crowded space already.

Sheep, Sheep you're all just sheep.

Did you hear? Apple is going to have a pen pased device called coded-name "Hemorrhoid" - it will be a handheld writing impliment filled with lead or graphite and a single sheet, pulp based, disposable receptor panel for jotting down notes and ideas.

Man I can't wait for it to come out! Powerbook G5? Powerbook G5? Powerbook G5? Powerbook G5 ?Powerbook G5? Powerbook G5? HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH Imagine with that Powerbook G5 we will be able to waste time at work talking about rumors 1 louder.

What the... ;)

Either you or the Apple engineers are playing a joke on us :D

Someone is :)

The guys at appleinsider came across the same final conclusion.

The folks at Apple are funny people. Remember the iPod Shuffle warning, "Do not eat iPod Shuffle??" That has me laughing for 10 minutes. :D

Hey... I want to know when they will let the iPod play Midi files...

Could use it

It would be nice if apple had a device for an audio breakout box I dont know a whole lot about the other boxesa out there so I would probably opt for the Apple product. Would be nice to have something me and my friends could use to record into garageband :D (literally what we r)
