This is the wrong way... Economic is so bad now that Apple should make "cheap" products now, a Nano with 2Gb or 4Gb in low-end, starting at 99$. Cameras are so useless if they suck, I would buy a good camera instead of new Nano

GPS sounds like a good feature on paper, but without a WiFi connection it's useless. Apple is willing to keep it out of the Touch mainly because they'll have people calling Apple Support asking how to get GPS to work in the car. Then again they could preload the Touch with the maps, but that would just waste precious storage space.

I would agree they should make it similar to the iPhone with the lock button and camera lens location (if the cases turn out to be for the real Touch).

Maybe it's possible that Apple purchased the offline Google Maps required for this.

I don't know why people think GPS requires Wi-Fi. Do those Garmin GPS's all have a persistent wireless connection? No, you just have local/downloaded maps.

The downloading of the maps...which could be circumvented by purchasing the right to have offline Google Maps.

There has always been a dramatic change to the Nano.
First: White Plastic "Classic"
Second: Aluminum "More Mini"
Third: Square Widescreen "Fatty"
Fourth: Back to Candybar-Design Thinner Accelerometer "Perfect?"

But a CAMERA! I was hoping for a new case to the Nano. I am pretty sure NONE of us has had a moment and said, " Darn... Why couldn't have my Nano had a camera! That is what they need to put in next!!!!" It'll probably be a crappy VGA camera, the cameras that were in cell phones in 2000-2005 or whatever. I hoping that all of this is fake because I am in need of a new iPod...

Just because we're seeing some silicone cases made by a Chinese company means nothing. Maybe we won't see a camera. Maybe the nano will be slimmer. You need to consider that there is not much more space they can eliminate because of the size of the headphone jack and dock connector.

The camera seems to be almost definite at this point.

I agree that the iPod Touch should (and likely will) get GPS. Now that Tom Tom and others are/will be offering downloadable map apps, it is no problem.

Oh ye of little faith ... Soon, everyone in the U.S. will be able to connect to the internet ... especially on the go ... making concerns in the car moot. WiMAX FTW. Meanwhile, enjoy the camera rumors!

Because you hold the nano in landscape when taking the photo.

You see that curve on the other side of the camera hole? That's for the click wheel. Where your HAND goes. And logically, your hand will cover the back side IN THE SAME LOCATION. Therefore, why is the camera hole not in the other corner, where your hand wouldn't be?

I don’t see why add a camera to a music device. But you have to admit, the Nano is an amazing device in a very small package. Not just that… out of all the apples products, the nano is the most better looking and best build quality. And just for £150.

And now they are adding a camera and I think upping the memory to 32GB (going by the history).

That very good engineering.

I agree.

I was umming and ahhring over the touch 2g and nano 4g...and in the end went for the Nano... For an incredibly small device, It's sooo cool.

what device can quench the thirst of those version folk thirsty for the iphone? an ipod touch of course

The strength of the GPS implementation on the iPhone is the online link, enabling up to the minute links to sites and features that are not necessarily available as either hard-wired or software additions on mainstream GPS units.

That's only one aspect of the iPhone's GPS nav that's attractive, and for many people online access isn't important. Having GPS nav in a device that you are likely to have with you most always is a stronger attraction to me. The needed storage for map data is only a small fraction of the available storage, too.

What makes GPS in the rumored Touch interesting is that you would now have a single pocket device that performs iPod, gaming, camera, nav and WiFi access -- all without a $$$/month cellular plan. Yeah, I think that would sell.

Can someone told me how should I use an iPod with a camera less than 3.2M (for sure) while I have a Nokia N85 with 5M pixels, and not counting there are millions of people who are using the N73. I still think "Battery Life" will be the killer apps for 7G iPod as they did it to the Macbook lines:eek:

That's all well and good but how about the people who aren't using these cameras? My gadget roster includes a Motorola Razr (I don't need anything more) and a EOS 350D, but given the size of an SLR I don't always carry it with me.
What do I always carry with me? An iPod.

So not being a tech snob; I'd love this.

You'd think so but people are still buying these machines by the bucket load. I don't think they have anything to worry about. So long as the price doesn't jump up that is.

megapixels aren't everything, and for many people a mobile phone camera won't replace a standard camera because no matter how many pixels the phone has, it won't match the quality

I'm wondering why the cases have a longer hole for the camera. flash? mirror?

I truly understand the megapixel effect, the fact that I still use DC for vacation and big events, and my N85 only for daily life picture.

But can you imagine the Nano having a better camera than the iPhone 3GS? So just wondering what it will be all about.

the longer hole stand for "camera+mirror" for Asians, since girls here like to take pictures by themselves:D

There are certain things during recessions that people will continually buy. Such things existed during the Great Depression. Same thing is happening now.

People want to listen to their music no matter what the economy is like and, for many, it may be the cheapest form of entertainment over a long-term period. A $150 dollar music player, if used even half the week, makes more sense than a first-run movie every week when considering the cost as most people have music they can already put on it.

Apple should be extremely happy that they have developed a brand and a product line that people will not leave even when the money flow slows.

mobile me

is anyone having problems getting there mobile me to work on a pc use Safari or firefox? ( i have the newest versions) i use a mac at home and a pc at work and for some reason i cant get mobile me to work on the pc

Does that good camera play music?

Seriously, I thought "whatever" when I bought my iPhone 3G with a 2.1 MP camera. I have never been interested in mobile phones with camera's because they tend to be not very good, and you never look at the pictures later anyway. Those times (like on holiday) when you do go somewhere to make pictures I tended to have a good camera with me. BUT I'm using my iPhone camera more often than I though I would. The pictures are good enough for snapshots. The new 3GS which has a 3 MP camera makes good enough pictures for standard sized reprints that probably around 95% of people use. Those people that make large reprints use better camera's anyway.

IMO 3 MP is good enough if they have a good lense to make use of it, especially if it has the focusing abilities of the iPhone 3GS, although I doubt that the Nano's software would be able to do that.

GPS is fine with out cell data or WiFi!

GPS sounds like a good feature on paper, but without a WiFi connection it's useless.
I'm not sure why this ignorance is constantly repeated, there is nothing about GPS that requires WiFi or Cellular data for that matter.

Wishful thinking if you ask me. Besides it is up to the user to decide how he wants to use his storage space.
I would agree they should make it similar to the iPhone with the lock button and camera lens location (if the cases turn out to be for the real Touch).

Actually there is good arguement for completely rearranging the controls to better support advanced software features. Plus the camera could use a shutter release button.

GPS requires Wi-Fi? Psh. No it doesn't.

Teardrop camera cutout suggests LED Flash

The teardrop shape for the camera hole suggests that it's also accommodating an LED Flash component... something I've always wanted my iPhone camera to have...

It looks more like a self-portrait mirror than a flash.

Guess the iPod Classic will never be updated with a larger capacity HD, huh?:(

Hopefully, the new iPod Touch will finally reach 64GB....

It probably will. Only time will tell.

I can see the point in this, IF, the camera is on pair with normal digital cameras....

If not, meh.

On any device this thin the focal length is too shallow to utilize a sensor that is comparable to a proper point and shoot camera. This means that a smaller sensor must be used and increasing the megapixel count gives you an unfavorably high pixel density. This is not something that can be overcome with engineering. It's simply a physical limitation.

Why does a satellite navigation device require wifi? The Garmin in my car doesn't. The handheld I use with topographical maps for hiking doesn't. And neither would this device. Apple's implementation of gps in the iphone using streaming google maps is a very poor imitation of how a proper gps should function. Oh, and for me preloaded maps would be the best possible use of space.

Add both of these functions and I could consolidate my cheap "always in the car" pocketable camera and and least one of my gps devices.
