This is a great idea on Apple's part and it makes Microsoft look just big an idiot as always. We're two years into the iPod Touch and the App Store and here comes Microsoft and the Zune HD to mimic the Touch.

Apple "Here's our iPod Touch."
MS "We have that too. The brand new Zune HD!"
Apple "Ours has a camera now."
MS "Dammit!!! Why didn't we think of that!"

I just think it's funny to watch them chase after Apple.

This can be taken both ways dude.

Microsoft "Ours has an OLED screen."

Just sayin :p ...

It would be great if they made an ipod with a high quality camera. But it has to be high quality otherwise whats the point when every cell phone in the world has a camera now. Megapixels arent that big a deal, I just want a camera that has proper exposure.

Hmm, in the centre here, but the other case has it in a corner.

I suspect that Apple had a couple of concept devices with the camera in different places, and one of these will turn out to be the correct one, selected after usability testing.

Shame really, the red case in the picture had a big enough hold for a LED flash as well. Well, it does have the teardrop hole in the middle I guess, if that's the camera, is the other hold there for decoration, or to allow some mirror-finish use?

sounds cool but is it necessary? i guess thats the case with a lot of technology though

Why does a satellite navigation device require wifi? The Garmin in my car doesn't. The handheld I use with topographical maps for hiking doesn't. And neither would this device. Apple's implementation of gps in the iphone using streaming google maps is a very poor imitation of how a proper gps should function. Oh, and for me preloaded maps would be the best possible use of space.

Add both of these functions and I could consolidate my cheap "always in the car" pocketable camera and and least one of my gps devices.

I never meant to imply that GPS requires WiFi or some always-on internet connection. It's just a nice feature to have, especially when you can receive up to the minute updates. And yes, Apple could preload maps but some might want to use that space for more music/videos. And at the moment, the only way Apple handles Maps is through a internet connection downloading the images. I don't foresee them using two different ways of handling Maps on the iPhone and Touch.

And as Arn pointed out, you can download maps to an iPhone/Touch using G-Map. But it'll set you back $70 (for both East and West map packs) and about 1.6GB of space. I'm all for more features on the Touch, but there must be a reason for no GPS. Licensing issues may be one. Preloading and map updates are another. They could allow GPS Touch users to download the maps from the App Store, but it goes against Apple's philosophy of "it just works" out of the box.

Well, an OLED screen might look good, but must have a serious impact on margins (I suspect MS is willing to be loss making on the Zune HD). And in twelve months it could bite MS on the bum as the screen starts to deteriorate. Apple, with its large volumes, can't afford to be too avant garde with the screen.

And I don't think the average buyer could care less. I think an OLED screen would be cool, but I am a bit of a geek and most people's eyes would glaze over about the "E". It would go like this: camera, or OLED screen? which to choose? And the girl picks the camera!

I would be more concerned about the HD part of the new Zune's name.

Ummm, except Apple beat them to the punch by like two years...

Can someone told me how should I use an iPod with a camera less than 3.2M (for sure) while I have a Nokia N85 with 5M pixels, and not counting there are millions of people who are using the N73. I still think "Battery Life" will be the killer apps for 7G iPod as they did it to the Macbook lines:eek:
From my experience larger mega-pixels in camera-phones only make the picture worse. I don't understand why you'd use a camera-phone when you can use a camera-digital.

Anyway, why would you want an iPhone Nano? The iPhone is already tiny. Also, those pictures look awfully ugly.

But who cares? I don't care who came out with the product first, I care which product is better. If the better product is the iPod Touch 3rd Gen, then it will be my next device. If the Zune HD is the superior of the two, then I will fork over the dough to Microsoft.

Question?

Has there ever been a case that had been "leaked" and then actually being fake?

I tried to word that right, but you get the idea.

Although yes, IF Microsoft were to make a better product, I would get it, but an OLED screen isn't THAT big a deal.

Now if Microsoft had a good Zune App store, with a nice browser, then were talking.

But by the time Microsoft comes out with these things, Apple will probably have another cool feature.

Oh, and no Zune for me until they work with OS X

Well only time will tell :p

And yea, I forgot Zune does not work with OSX, that is a little fail.

I think this is very likely after Nintendo followed this direction with the DSi.

I also think the bit at the side of the hole could be an indicator light to show if the camera is on like on the Mac's iSight cameras.

The lines are getting too close!!!

I hope that Apple won't make the product lines that close to each other. I think it would be interesting if Apple put the camera in the iPod Nano but the Touch would be almost exactly like the iPhone with a camera.
