Last week we saw the first evidence that iPhone 4.0 was in testing with reports that it was already being spotted in web site logs. We pointed out at the time that while interesting, such user agent logs could easily be faked. This week, we've received slightly more evidence that iPhone OS 4.0 is indeed undergoing testing.

One iPhone developer has since noted a single instance of iPhone OS 4.0 being used in their Pinch Media analytics.

The new operating system first appeared this week in their application's logs. While such data can still be faked, it seems less likely to be. Testing of iPhone OS 4.0 may correspond with reports of new iPhone hardware also being tested. Any new iPhone would require a new version of the iPhone operating system to support the new hardware. Apple is widely expected to release a new iPhone in the summer around WWDC 2010.

yes i cant wait till it comes out
i think it will come out next iphone release June/July

I guess I don't care unless it is unlocked or at least gets actual reception through some magic antenna thing. And tiered data-use pricing would be fair.

The Google phone will be out then, supposedly, so maybe some competition and an end to the spooning with AT&T.

OK - can this stop? We all promise to accept as fact that Apple is working on iPhone 4.0 if we can just stop being inundated with stories stating the obvious.

What? You can change the iPhone OS Version Number if you have a jailbroken phone.

I might just change mine to 5.0 and setback and wait to see all the stories about it.

I acknowledged that in the article.

One user seems a little odd... I could fake this stuff and go place that one user on any website. I do imagine the 4.0 software is already well under development at this point, but...

Edit: I guess I'm late to the discussion with this observation.

Bold predictions:

1.) iPhone OS 4.0 previewed around March at a media event
2.) 4th gen iPhone unveiled at WWDC in June
3.) iPhone OS 4.0 released
4.) 4th gen iPhone released a few days later

Unbelievable, I know. But just you wait and see! It's like I have a sixth sense for these things or something. Trust me.

Think Apple wants the public to know that they are testing 4.0 in the wild. So damn good at keeping anything that they do under wraps. ::applause::

OS 3 was outed the same way around this time last year. i think it was Ad Mob who reported 2 users in SF using it.

Na ! I have the answer !

The only guy running iPhone 4.0 must be Steve Jobs himself.
:D And, for people who believe it is tablet, please consider that this is something they can change pretty easily on the device. They made it, so they can change the string for another version.

This isn't about iPhone 4!

(Liar!!)

This is about saving the future of humanity!

(Jean-Luc blow up the damn ship!!!!)

No! NOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!! [smash glass]

Alright!!! iPhone OS 4.0!!!

..except wait a minute...I still have no idea what features it will have, when it will be released, or what devices it will run on.

Yay?

Interesting.

I am a developer and I checked my PinchMedia stats and found 4.0 as well as 3.1.3.

They must be testing!

I know, really. My question is who doesn't think OS 4.0 is testing at this point?

Wow, Apple testing the next version of iPhone. I was so sure that they had decided to quit developing the iPhone.

This is massive news and comes like a lightning bolt from clear sky.
