Wifi syncing is only useful on small changes. My videos have been messed up many times because syncing over night with a 64GB ipad is just to slow. Besides how do you select different apps and videos if you don’t go to your PC/Mac to select them?

My experience sounds much better than yours. I simply connected the iPad (and iPhone) once via USB sync cable to check the wifi sync box in iTunes. I haven't had any issues transferring movies using the wifi sync, they probably do take longer, but I really haven't noticed a huge difference overall.

I still use my mac to transfer apps and movies, unless I want to redownload apps via iCloud. (I rip dvd's, rather than purchase them via iTunes, so I can't redownload them, I have to sync from a computer.)

Using wifi sync is exactly the same as wired sync, nothing changes except the cord is plugged into the ac adapter vs the iMac.

iPad 2S doing just fine.

Is that USB 1, 2, or the amazing 3?

I'd imagine it's USB 2.0 since I have them plugged into the dock on my 23" Apple Displays.

new iPad can draw as much as 2 amps of current when charging the battery from a nearly-depleted state, pushing the capacity of charging connections such as computer USB ports. Apple's supplied iPad power adapter provides for up to 2.1 amps of current from a wall outlet,

It draws 2 amps while charging and the wall adapter only provides 2.1 amps? Talk about bare minimum.

well, when you consider that the max speed you will see an USB iPad transfer is about 25MBs->30MBs, and 802.11n can transfer anywhere from 0MBs up to about 35MBs (depending on the config of course), in some cases the wifi transfer may be faster than USB2.0.

Latest iPad Charging

"you have to wonder how much Apple cares about PC owners".
PC owners who buy the new iPad get the same Wall power adapter as everyone else so that is a non-issue. Apple has always recommended using the wall power adapter to charge the iPad/iPhone/anyways.
The latest iPad has a battery that takes up to 75% of the case, so naturally it's going to take longer to charge. The best way to do this is plug it into charge when you go to bed. By the morning your iPad is ready for all day use.
I don't see why this is a big deal. Everyone likes picking on Apple products, yet when the truth comes out most of the time all the whining is about nothing. I do this with my iPhone and can get plenty of use out of it all day and night before going to bed. Then I put it on the wall charger until morning with a 100% charge.

USB 3.0 old technology? *lol* Really? That must be the reason, why Apple supports USB 3.0, in the next MBPs and MBAs. Yeah, that must be the reason! Not!?

The minimum USB power spec is as old as the USB standard itself. If manufacturers choose to bump that up (as Apple has) its up to them. Since most PC makers choose to do the absolute minimum, there you go...

Maybe Dell, et. al. would push 2 amps through USB if someone could figure out how to enable it via a crapware option. I can see the headline on the box (just below the 12 Intel stickers) "USB Power Sponsored by Symantec!"

And regarding Windows:
I can do much more on Windows, than on the Mac OS X platform. Windows is a very modern, stable OS. I know it sounds absurd for you, but i plan to buy a Windows-based workstation for video editing/encoding (perhaps a Mac Pro or HP (both with Windows 7 SP1)).

Ooooo... "Modern and stable" huh? Sounds like you are describing my uncle buying a new shirt on the way to his AA meeting.

Windows hasn't broken new ground in many years. If people were so crazy about its new and exciting features and functions, Microsoft's stock wouldn't be stuck where it has been for the last decade, and Apple would be afraid.

Why Not...

Why can't Apple invent a wireless charger? That would get around all these port amperage limitations. If Tesla were still alive he could do it!! :D

Why would anyone use AT&T?

"in discussions with Apple" while Verizon already offers hotspot access at no charge.

if you want to be bathed in EMF

Thank you, but no.

There are enough questions about the safety of strong EMR fields that I'll choose to connect a wire to my devices.

Broken Dell

My ipad 1 would not charge from the USB ports on my 2011 Dell desktop at work. I applied that ASUS hack that increased the voltage and then it charged, but s l o w l y. This is not a new issue. I think that the Consumer reports testers were using an USB port when they ran their test; I can pretty much guarantee that my ipad one would not get any charge while playing infinity blade and charging from my Dell.

That may be so, but from a working standard 500 mA USB 1 or 2 port it will charge while asleep, but slowly. When awake, the power is used to power the machine and make the battery drain more slowly or not at all.

Blame Dell for poor USB ports.

Why?

"considering a standard USB 2.0 port only delivers 500mA and even a USB 3.0 port will only deliver 900mA, you have to wonder how much Apple cares about PC owners."

WHY SHOULD THEY CARE!??

They are creating the best device and best customer experience they can. With the new iPad is included a proper charger.

They CANNOT manage the vast number of OTHER manufacturer's machines and their sub-par, underpowered ports.

That is absolutely ridiculous. Because a PC owner's USB port doesn't supply as much power as the included charger for the 3rd generation iPad, Apple is screwing over their PC owning customers?

EDIT:

It's not like Apple can just go back and change the USB port specs. Obviously the iPad needs this amount of power to run their device, and they're not making it require so much power just to be jerks. That comment make absolutely no sense to me.

The specs for USB 2.0 allow it to go up to 5A.

Battery Charging Specification 1.2[10]: Released in December 2010.
Several changes and increasing limits including allowing 1.5A on charging ports for unconfigured devices, allowing High Speed communication while having a current up to 1.5A and allowing a maximum current of 5A.

The issue isn't so much the iPad draws too much power but that most PC manufacturers under power their USB ports.

Why would anyone need to charge their iPad via anything other than an outlet?

Exactly. What surprised me on the PC side was how motherboard manufacturers, or perhaps Windows itself, had not supported the charging capability of the hardware. I mean, there are many Windows users who are devout gear-heads, buying and assembling individual components, including motherboards, overclocking this and that, etc. You'd think they would be shouting for maximum performance.

It's also bizarre that it took ASUS 2 years to implement a driver hack that would improve USB charge times, and especially that they felt they had to support other manufacturer's motherboards, too.

But the point is moot. The included charger provides adequate charging (10W = 2A @ 5VDC). If your USB port isn't up to snuff, complain to your hardware manufacturer.

I have one!

They call it a "solar panel", works pretty good but I am going to send mine back because it stops working at night. It is the strangest thing.

too long

just think HOW LONG it would take with inductive charging, probably twice as long as now.

Why not Thunderbolt? It's much faster than FireWire, let alone USB.
FireWire for more than a year-old hardware, Thunderbolt for the most recent versions.

T-Bolt is too big, too expensive, too power-hungry - and the bottleneck is probably the flash memory, not the interface.

Unless you're hitting above 30 MB/sec (decimal), USB is not the issue.
Syncing an i-device through USB is usually painfully slow, much slower than what the memory chips can take, and I strongly suspect it has to do with the considerable USB overhead. WiFi syncing is also slow.

So, using Thunderbolt or FireWire would give a much better user experience than USB.

These statements are somewhat contradictory - if *both* USB and WiFi are slow, perhaps the memory chips *are* the bottleneck.

Flash can be painfully slow, especially if there's only one "bank" of flash memory.

Fast SSDs, thumbdrives, SD cards, ... use multiple banks of flash memory in a RAID-0 like configuration to read/write in multiple parallel streams.

How can you tell if charger is for ipad or iphone?

I have three iOS devices (phone, 2 ipads) and long ago I jumbled up the chargers, meaning I have no clue if the ipad charger is charging the iphone, or if the iphone charger is charging the ipad.

Is there a way to look at the chargers and distinguish which is which?

WOW, 25 hours. That is great for global use. Pop in a local SIM, and you've got yourself a few GB of hotspot, and it would last at least a full day with MHS active, and some light on-device use, quite possibly more than that depending on the use scenario.
