Hi, new to this forum but had to ask:

Has anyone gotten an old Mac Mini lately? Because I'm struggling with my old desktop pc waiting for the officialization of the upgrade and it's exhausting the life out of me and I'd really want the new one (especially after all this waiting).

Just to be on the safe side you should wait, as we all are doing. If you read the previous pages on this thread you would notice that some are lucky and got the new models, as others have gotten older models. It's ok though, this is your first post so I'll let it slide :p. I hope Apple will update these systems soon, and now there are rumors about an Intel Mac Mini in January...when will it end? haha

Welcome to Mac Rumors! :D

Welcome to Mac Rumors! :D

Between myself and two co-workers of mine, we have all recently received the updated Mini. All of us ordered ours within the last month and all of us ordered it BTO with 1GB of RAM. It is not much of a gamble (getting an updated Mini) if you live in the US and order BTO.

Well, obviously I'm happy to have got the updated model, but the extra 80 MHz and 32 MB wasn't really such a big deal for me. I had to order the mini now as a backup computer, because my main work Mac is starting to play up and I can't afford any downtime.

If it wasn't for that immediate need, and I was in the market for a mini, I'd probably have waited until the new models were officially announced.

I know! I know!! I'm sat here with my head in my hands thinking "what a stoopid thing to ask!?"; of course you're happy to have received the updated model!!! That's what the lack of coffee does to me!?!

Personally speaking, unless the mini is officially updated between now and the store openings at Manchester [end of November-ish] and Sheffield [10th December] I'm waiting!! Hoping to achieve the same as Chaos Step should they [the update] not be announced by the time either store is open...

Here's to waiting!! Tick follows tock, follows tick... ;)

If, and thats a BIG if, Apple do come out with an Intel based mini in January, I don't think there would be any point in them announcing this latest update only to have it replaced less than two months later. The secretive way Apple have behaved with these new minis is very odd indeed - perhaps it does have something to do with a new intel version in Jan?

Update Mac Mini

I have been anxiously awaiting the formal announcement to but an updated Mac Mini. I was at the Apple store in Des Moines Friday and the clerk let me look at two of the boxes they had in back. The date code was '537' and when I entered the serial number into the support page, they were both 'Late 2005' models. I took a chance (albeit a relatively small one) and bought one. I was delighted to find out it was indeed an update 1.5 GHz machine with a 1.5 GHz processor and 64 MB of VRAM. Thanks to all on this board who have posted the information I used to buy this updated Mini.

Congrats! The updated 1.5 is a sweet little rig for the money...

You know,

I was thinking. The new'ish mini is pretty much a 12" powerbook in a box, except for the video card itself. Both are 64 mb, but are different cards.

That's a sweet cheap setup, I reckon.

What is the model number? Does it end with /B or /A? I am guessing the /B is the updated one.

Bakey - where can I check on the Manchester Store opening details?

Alrighty there Davast; the only thing I can recommend is to head over to http://www.ifoapplestore.com.

Doing so turned up this - and more interestingly take a look here; according to this page [about half way down under "Grand Openings"] the Trafford Centre store is due to open this coming Saturday November 19 th!! Which is nice... ;)

Update :: For all who may be interested, I [like many others no doubt] have just received an e-mail confirming the 9am opening of the Apple Store at the Trafford Centre on Saturday November 19th....

Now then, what's the URL for that 'serial number' checking site?

Has anyone purchased from Amazon?Which mac mini did you get? I'd like to get that mail-in rebate if I could.

The part number is M99****/B

Serial is YM537******

Model Number is A1103

It is a very nice machine and I am very happy with it. I have doing mostly web browsing and light video editing with iMovie/iDVD so far and it works great. I have it connected to the family room HDTV and it is whisper quiet during normal operation. The fan does speed up a bit when encoding but it is very acceptable.

I had one in my hands today with the same details. I just could not go through with it. I am so tempted to go buy it right now

So I checked on Amazon and the model numbers reads M9971LL/B. What does that mean? Is it the new one?

Amazon also shows at least one model with /A as no longer available. After I asked the qestion about the part/model number I read that Apple last updated the mini in August or was it Jully? In any case I am not so sure /B means the 1.33/1.5GHz models... May the part/model number on the box just show the previous model... Anyhow I am guessing when the latest models are announced it will have /C and the boxes and their labels will reflect it.

I solved my slow boot problem. I downloaded the free utility called Cocktail and installed it and turned off Journaling on the Hard Drive. I also went into the Network System Preference and under the Advanced option unchecked the IPsecV6(I think that is what it is called.) I booted in single user mode and looked at the command line boot stuff to see if I could see anything unusual and it looked like it hung awhile on the IPsecV6 command, so that's why I turned that off(I'm not even sure what that is). I'm not sure which one did it, but it cut my boot time probably in half. No more hanging for 45 seconds at the spinning cog.

I'd really recommend turning journaling back on. It helps save you from data loss by keeping a track of all files on the hard drive. If you move a file it keeps track of how much of the original file has been copied and how much of the new file has been created so when you run your disk tool it can easily correct any errors and you won't be left with bits of files. You might as well just use FAT32 on your drive if you are gonna turn it off.

Gravis

For the Germans: I talked to a Gravis-employee and he said, they already had some new models mixed with the old ones.

His guss was, that Apple ran out of the old chips, that's why they ship new models. Interesting.

Cool, I wish the next gen mini would support the 30" screen, that would realy be great.

Ok,
I took the risk and ordered a mini now, as I need it.
BTO, 1G RAM, hope it's a faster machine..
Currently it shows this information; I suppose to early to say something?

You'll get an email from Apple called "Your Apple Invoice" when it has shipped.

Halfway down or so, below the Item Product Number and description will be your serial number.

You can check it then ;)

It could be that it was waiting for an IP adress and that it took longer cause you don't have anything responding to IPsecV6 on your network.
