It's like people have never seen the iPod 5th generation before.

The protruding lens isn't that bad. It barely wobbles when placed on its backside and it's barely noticeable.

Its cause no one bought the 5th gen ipod ;) You will find most of the people posting on here have iPhones.

For Iphones users going from no protruding lens to having one, is going to ruffle a few feathers.

Not only that but most people buy a case for their phone so they may never notice it at all

When are you people going to get it? There is no 5,5'' iPhone coming. IF Apple steps up to 4,7'' it'll be a huge deal since they in that case are moving away from the "one-hand-operation" they discussed warmly when the iPhone 5 was introduced.

Not that anyone will be taking me seriously, I'm just a guy in little little Sweden. I'll probably not even see the damn phone until the end of 2014 with the new countries that are included in launch plans...

Protruding lens?! If this is true, ill sit the next generation or two out.

Why? I don't even understand why this would bother someone to the point of not buying it lol. They are just rumors first of all and we all know apple designs everything beautifully. Even if true i doubt it will stick out much at all and anyone who doesnt buy it due to that is pretty petty and anal

I'm curious about how Apple will approach this actually. Will they just ignore what they said about previous iPhones? I mean, 4.7" isn't THAT much bigger. I'd say it's comfortably larger.

They did it on the iPod touch 5th gen. There was no problem. Just get over it.

Already dreading that camera ring :(
It better have one hell of a camera if it's going to have that ugly protruding lens.

This part made me cringe.

A lot of people want bigger phones now. It is in apples best interest to make two larger models now instead of a 4.7 now and maybe 2 years down the road a 5.5. Jobs wanted a one handed iPhone and times do change. We no longer talk on our phone much now we text and use data more. Apple also said no one wanted a smaller tablet then the iPad mini was released. I had my doubts about the 5.5 too but i think the fact that it could come out months later is more believable now then it not existing. Apple should just make the two sizes now to avoid another increase a year or two down the line plus it would put samsung in their place. I hope it exists and i hope there is no extra wait cause I'm anxious for this phone now.

They did it on the iPod touch 5th gen. Nobody complained because there was no problem. Just get over it.

There wasn't a problem because that wasn't Apple's flagship product. That's the product that you buy because you're too poor to buy the real deal, or because you're buying it for someone else (IE, a child that you don't trust enough to give an iPhone to).

Even if it still rests on its back fine, it's ugly.

I do agree that most people won't notice since most people get cases anyways, but I keep my iPhone caseless. It's so much prettier than any available cases.

An embedded emblem would finally solve the mystery of a protruding camera lens. Afterall, if the emblem is lifting the device off its surface through the centre, then a protruding camera would be unaffected.

It really isn't ugly at all. And you never even notice it in day-to-day use. That's why it isn't a problem.

Don't forget: while it isn't the flagship model, Apple still sells millions of the devices. It's not like they didn't care when they designed the iPod touch.

Protruding Camera Ring

How many people carry around their iPhone naked versus using a case?

A protruding ring is a microscopic nitpick, really, only for asthetes. The majority won't care after taking it out of the box and slapping a case around it. If that's the price to be paid for a better camera with optical image stabilization, then it's worth it (for me).

Be careful with saying something like that around here as it might be used as "ample evidence" for everyone flip-flopping about protruding-rings-on-smartphones if they are made by apple.

/jk :)

I have never used a case on any of my phones.

I do mind the aesthetics of the phone, but don't think it really matters much if the camera is slightly protruding. Although it would be nicer if the phone wouldn't rock on a flat surface. Also the antenna bands on the back of the iPhone may look ugly first, but people are going to adapt to it.

I'm going to buy an iPhone 6 anyway.

People complained about it when the iPod touch was announced, but I didn't think it was that big of a deal.

Then I bought one, and it turns out it's genuinely a bit annoying. I'm reminded of it every time I set it down on a flat surface.

The difference is that this one is allegedly protruding from the body of the phone.

the protruding ring is a good enough reason for me to avoid buying the larger phone :(

What do we know?

Apple will use liquidmetal for the logo, but they will still use plastic for the antennas. (liquidmetal devices can be huge antennas in itself. Great signals, great build quality).

This means that the logo is "just" a huge, 50 million a quarter, trial for this new material. Looks like they have tremendous plans for liquidmetal. Hopefully, iphone 7.

Apple isn't like Samsung or Microsoft, they care about user experience. So a protruding lens will maintain sapphire like the 5s and it won't scratch. So users can respectfully stop the stupid bitching and moaning. It looks nice on the iPod touch, and it won't scratch.

You must not have seen the iPod Touch that has this sort of camera. Not everything apple designs is beautiful. Take off your blinders.

they'll fix protru-gate at 6s, so I'll just skip this one.

3 ways to "fix" it:
  1. Make the 6s/7 thicker. Never. Apparently, "thin" is the most important benefit on the launch marketing list
  2. Make the 6s/7 camera part thinner to fit inside the arbitrary "thinner" chosen for this model. Possible but the tradeoff in thinning distance between lens and image capture chip is often quality.
  3. Get rid of the camera. Kicking the camera out of the box is like kicking the superdrive out of an all-in-one iMac. Sure, it's not all-in-one anymore but look at those thin edges.

I'm curious about how Apple will approach this actually. Will they just ignore what they said about previous iPhones? I mean, 4.7" isn't THAT much bigger. I'd say it's comfortably larger.

Yes. That's what Apple does. People here treat anything Apple says like it's religion. Right up until Apple shifts doctrine, the established doctrine is all-important law. At one point, 3.5" was the one-and-only "perfect" screen size for a phone. All other sizes were "abominations". Then, Apple shifted to 4" as the new perfect. Was that an "abomination"? Was Apple "stupid" for making that shift? Was the "99% crowd who don't want anything bigger then 3.5" not buying the new 4" Apple iPhone? Of course not. All that sentiment just evaporated when Apple endorsed the new size. Now they'll shift to another new "perfect" and all the sentiment spun for anything bigger than 4" is also about to evaporate.

Until the shift, "we" cling to the current doctrine which includes "one-handed use". However, after Apple rolls out the new one, they'll drop that bullet from the spiel, slug in a new one or two bullets supporting the bigger screen and then the new doctrine will be established.

For a day or two after the announcement, there will be a flux as the new doctrine early adopters defend the changes to the slower-to-adopt crowd. But after about 2 days or so, doctrine like "one handed use" will cease to be referenced as if it was never said in the first place.

Apple shifts views often. Here's a few more famous ones: http://www.techlicious.com/blog/5-big-flip-flops-from-apple/ If you could go back and look at threads before and after those flips, you'll see arguments very similar to the "one handed use" argument, arguing for the endorsed doctrine before the change and then going right with the change after Apple rolls it out. It's the same over and over again.
