All of this talk...

is just 'pseudo-intellectual' masturbation based on an article from a Chinese tech publication that reveals no solid details as to product or scope other than they are "working" with Apple on a product(s) to be introduced in Q3 2009. If you 'fanboise' don't get a grip on yourselves, you're going to have an aneurysm before the end of the week. Take a break and go outside to play for a change.

My money is on this devise replacing the MacBook Air - with the MacBook Air being the first stepping stone to the new device. Apple needed to test some technologies and the MacBook Air was the result. Now for the next step..

I'm in the same pot. The size makes sense (a bit smaller, but), the price makes sense, the positioning makes sense, the name makes sense; MacBookAir --> MacAir.

Tablet - with extra keyboard??

Although i do agree, a pure tablet would be a bit difficult sometimes, i'm sure i've seen a prototype where the tablet also has a stand and a keyboard, which would allow portability with on screen keyboard if there is no space for keyboard.

I predict that this is not going to be a netbook, why would apple release a small clamshell laptop and take away sales from their macbook, macbook air and macbook pro lines. I personally think the only people who want apple to release a netbook do not want to invest in a good laptop like a macbook or macbook prol. Instead I think it's going to look like a larger ipod touch, which opens the gates for new apps that were not around earlier due to the size of ipods. I see apple releasing an ilife and iwork app for such a device as well. In addition, apple will open a market to sell ebooks, magazines and newspaper subscriptions through Itunes because a device like this would be the perfect ereader due to its lack of plastic, non-screen edges and physical buttons. There is endless possibilities for a large minimilistic touch screen that does not get hot when using. I like my macbook, but it gets hot after awhile of using to surf the web, email, itunes, and so on. I see a touch screen with a power button, isight, and maybe 1 or 2 usb ports hidden like the air. I don't see a full functioning OS like Leopard in it because this is not a desktop or laptop replacement, and having a iphone hybrid os will keep costs down. This is going to be an evolution of the ipod and a re-invention of the tablet. Finally IMO touch screen monitors do not work because your hand would get tired from having to point at a screen sitting in front of you, but if you have a large touch screen sitting in your lap, its an ideal device for multi-touch.

Which I agree with...an up-scaled post-PC device running iPhone OS and expanded apps like iWork/iLife, copy/paste, USB/dock. This rather than a down-scaled PC device/macBook.

While I've been wanting the latter for some time now (and Snow Leopard would be essential to it) I'm now more keen on the former.

Nobody wants to drop a couple hundred on a device that is a giant display just to hide said display in another more expensive display.

Thank you for a good comment on what is rapidly becoming the dumbest idea to float around here. Why would you dock some 3-pound device like that when you can just plug a cable in? Why why why? That's what DisplayPort and USB are around for.

This goes for all the people who will show mockups of some netbook shell with an iPhone docked where the touch pad would be, not noticing that you're already spending $200 on the "mouse" for it.

That's what the whole site is until about 2 weeks before a product launch when actual news floats around. But the rest of it is crap like people wanting to run Leopard on and iPhone (yes, Leopard) and others who drop words like Nehalem around like it means something to those of us who don't speak ubernerd.

My MacTouch

I mocked something up. I'm calling it the MacTouch.
I think a 10" touch screen that could be used in a tablet form factor... Then you slide up the screen to reveal a physical keyboard, if you need to get some serious work done. It would be amazing if it could run both OSX apps and iPhone "widgets". You'd save a lot of space by doing away with a trackpad (since there's a touch screen). One or two USB ports, headphone jack, speakers, wireless, 3G... and that's it. I don't think this thing would be made for plugging into a larger monitor. This is pretty much half way between an iPhone and a MacBook Air.
This would have all the positives of a tablet and a netbook. Though I expect it would be fairly expensive... and they'd have to do some serious work on the sliding-up mechanism.

Is it likely the processor would be the new quad core ARM?

Well the nVidia Tegra 650 line is due to ship mid 09 well.
It's a bit of a toss up between a custom ARM, nvidia ARM or an intel Atom.

I think the ARM is more likely that way they get control of the graphic performance, as well as battery life.

No doubt they have all the options running at this stage, they'll lock down at the last minute.

I agree... it was a concept and the product does not really fit into their product line. It's a sheik product... just like the air.

I watched an interview with Steve and Big Bill awhile back and they were saying that for a consumer level they could conceivably see three products.

1. The computer in your pocket - iPhone/iPod Touch
2. The computer on your desk - MacBook, Mini or iMac
3. The computer for your BIG screen in the living room.

I can eventually see someone who has a iPhone type device docking it to a work station and it being power for the whole thing... SSD, OS, wireless device for connecting to the internet. Then you've basically got a big monitor with a real keyboard, mouse and extra power.

This touch tablet (which SJ has mention NUMEROUS times in interviews) would simply a fun device for their brains to diddle with... that is what they are doing with the apple TV as well. Eventually these products will become truly practically with the popularity that iPods and iPhones have as well. Some products are best to be evolved... other products are best for the big bang!

Too funny. Couldn't you be more direct and put that in a simpler way? ;)

BTW, are fanboise French?

Hey now. I just posted this in the first thread. Cool Stuff, huh?

Anyway, I said that my money is on this:

Truth be told, if it's good enough for me to do some real mobile work... (2ghz + 1gb ram) ... I'll buy that and a MacPro.

That second image looks like a Radio Shack Tandy 102.

I agree that most of those features will probably be on a future netbook, but I don't see a need for a physical keyboard if it has a touch screen already. I think Apple would want to make it similar to the iPhone, with a on-screen keyboard.

such as this!!!
check out bottom left
btw - this is a mockup - it was discussed in october 08 - last time everyone thought a macbook touch was around the corner

I know those mockups have been around for months but they seem so realistic! I love the name too.

What I think that Apple wouldn't have on it though is the speaker on the bottom. If it were to resemble an iPhone, then the speaker would be on the side. And the "on" button it on top of the speaker, a similar design to the old MBP like I have. The power button will probably resemble the one of the new MacBook.

How about this: (just did a little editing)

I want something along the size of a Sony Vaio P, like a slate, that slides up to reveal a keyboard. And make it the price of a Vaio P - $900. Otherwise, Sony's getting my money.

Come on everyone...

physical keyboard NOT!
iPhone doesn't, they are a thing of the past.

price, it's an Apple/Mac, who cares.

cutting edge, beautiful and a few surprises, that's what we expect and that is what we pay premium prices for.

Why?

All I want for my flip phone to do is make the StarTrek beep beep beep Noise. That would be awesome.

In many ways the iPhone already is more advanced than the Star Trek communicator. It certainly does more than the Communicator.

Back in the day I was a big fan of the Star Trek series. Cell phone technology is one thing they seemed to mess up on or at least didn't have a very good grasp of what might happen in the near future. Even though it is only a cell phone iPhone certainly represents a more advance device. They never imagined a device that could do voice communications over a number of frequencies and protocols, handle web type communications, run numerious apps including reference materials, E-Mail and function as your personal music repositories. To me a far more amazing device than the communicator.

In any event those where the good old days, that show was inspiring in some ways. At least for a budding nerd. It is to bad NASA is so screwed up and lacking in vision these days. Combine that with a nation that doesn't care anymore and I end up saddened.
