Arn? ALABAMA?!?

Arn, I'm hurt... what were you thinking?

Duke is located in Durham, North Carolina, but you quoted an AP story on a website from Alabama?!?

How about using the primary source for the abridged AP story - Durham's Herald-Sun - "Free iPod players find a niche in Duke classrooms":
Powelson's instructor in macroeconomics, Lori Leachman, is among faculty members who use the iPod in the classroom. Leachman posts recordings of her lectures on a class Web site.

Besides the recordings, Leachman also puts up interactive graphics to help students understand economic principles, she said. The electronic aids extend her reach in the 300-student course.

"I have a number of technological accoutrements," she said.

Obiala also used her iPod in a first-year writing course last semester, when she interviewed students about their tendency to segregate themselves by race and ethnic group.

An instructor in the writing program, Michele Strano, had her students recorded interviews for last semester's writing project and included excerpts from the recordings in computer slide-show presentations that accompanied their 15-to-20-page papers.

"It's a way of making writing public," Strano said. "I want students to have this idea of writing as having meaning to people besides me and them."

She was also able to copy recordings of all 82 interviews by class members onto her own iPod, she said.

This semester, Strano's students will record interviews about social rituals such as proms, weddings, sorority rush and watching the Super Bowl.

Last year, Strano said, not all her students owned a recording device of any kind.

good podcasts

There are lots of good podcasts out there, but it does depend on what kinds of things you are into.

like others have said,
the Dawn and Drew show is good, so is the Daily Source Code

Coverville is great

and of course mine, Celtic Music News (at http://www.celticmusicnews.com ) is a great one :) If you have an ipodder client, just add, http://podcast.celticmusicnews.com/rss.xml

what kind of shows are u looking for?
Rip N Read blogger podcast is also good.
or Bib and Yazz take over the world

It would be nice on the podcasts if some of them recorded in aac then changed the extension from .m4a to m4b. That would make it more like the audible format that bookmarks your place, allowing you to leave it and come back to the same place. I guess the drawback to this would be it would make it more exclusive to itunes and ipod. On second thought that isn't much of a drawback!

Aha!! but...

But many podcast listeners do so at work on computers etc etc.

BUT if you use ipodderX for your 'podcatching' the new version allows you to automatically convert the mp3 into bookmarkable aac. This allows the podcasters to create one file (mp3) usable by anyone and then you can conert to aac (using your specified settings) if you want. This is even done on a podcast by podcast approach so short podcasts might not be converted as there is no point.

BUT WHAT ABOUT THE LOSS IN QUALITY CONVERTING FROM ONE LOSSY FORMAT TO ANOTHER???

So what, podcasts are usually 64kbps-96kbps so it's not really going to downgrade the quality anything noticable.

just like in sporting goods store, sales people will show you different inline skate brands ...when you say rollerblades ... they won't just show you Rollerblade branded

That's my point. Someone comes in asking for an iPod and the salesperson proceeds to show them all different brands of MP3 players. I bet this happened a lot last Christmas with parents going to buy iPods for their kids without any idea what an iPod really is, just that they'd better get one. Especially when the real iPods were out of stock, I can see some salespeople selling them whatever was available.

Thats freaking hilarious..... I guess the guy forgot usb isnt bootable on the Apple. I guess he also wasnt thinking that he could have built a much faster cheaper raid with about 1000 times the capacity for about the same money.

Yeah, but can you hang it around your neck and will it whistle Dixie?

Those Duke kids are total geeks if the majority of time spent with their ipod is listening to lectures. Nah uh. No Way.

At least the rest of the country knows this now. ;)

GO HEELS!
