It was just something we covered in a semantics course at the University of Wisconsin.

Why would I make up a retroactive story to 'cover my butt' when I was not the one who said it?

But even the Dictionary.com post seems to say "it happened, we don't know why...hey, let's be kind and assume they did it for a reason!"

Oh, I am not really sure why it happened. It could have just been a mistake originally. But people seem to fail to acknowledge that it is a frequently used expression here. It is not just a few people misusing the original expression.

It's kind of like the pronunciation of the word harassed.
