I hold in landscape position, rest it in the 'crotch' between my thumb and my other four fingers and use the other hand to type..
Me too. Sitting on the couch in landscape with the bottom of the iPad resting on my left hand as above, i.e. if I was left handed then I would be holding the iPad as if it were a paper aeroplane that I was about to launch. This works perfectly for me if I'm upright, slouching or even lying prone on the couch and so long as I'm only browsing or doing a bit of Google searching then only having one hand to type is OK. If I want to type more, like a forum reply, then I sit upright, rest the iPad on my legs, and do two handed typing.

The only time I ever use my iPad in portrait mode is if I need to use an app that is only availiable in iPhone compatibility mode and hopefully those will get less and less as app developers update their apps.

In portrait mode, either propped up on a knee or two, or held in one hand by the lower corners.

It makes such a difference whether you have it in a case or not. I tend to keep it in its (Macally) case, in which it can feel quite heavy, but when I take it out I'm reminded how thin and light it actually is. :)

The only problem is the slippiness of the aluminium back. I wonder whether it will change for a rubberised moulded material for iPad 2, perhaps to help with weight too.

Many ways. . . . . depends what i'm doing.

Got to say though that the Apple case (and other cases like it I guess) does make the thing massively easier to hold. I've taken it out twice and ended up putting it straight back in because I just can't use it comfortably when it's naked.

I finally bought an Ipad 2 1/2 weeks ago. One of the factors holding me back from buying for so long was the ergonomic concern. Playing with one in the Apple or Best Buy stores is deceptive in that this gives the impression that the device is heavy and hard to use. In actual practice, in my home, office or on the subway, it is quite comfortable. In the store I was trying to hold it in one or two hands and type blackberry style or hunch over the table and type. Neither was that comfortbale. In practice, I am sitting somewhere (usually on my couch), and just have it in the Apple case resting in my lap. Therefore I don't notice the weight and typing (in landscape particularly) is a breeze.

In brief, I usually have the Ipad in the Apple case (of which I had heard so many negative things, but which I realy love), on my lap, in either portrait or landscape depending on the app, but usually landscape. I also find that the Apple case, although it clearly adds weight, makes the Ipad seem lighter to me, as opposed to when it is naked, due to the greater comfort level the extra grip gives me.
