The recent plethora of threads debating the merits of certain rock bands has lead me to wonder what the single most overrated band of all time is.

I think arguments can be made for artists big and small, and there's so many choices that it would be silly to try and make a poll, but let me get the ball rolling by nominating U2.

Pretentious stadium rock at its worst, with one of the weakest rhythm sections of all time. Not the worst band by a long shot, but probably the worst for talent-to-accolade ratio.

Dave Matthews Band is a close second. It seems like they only know one song, and it's not even that great a song to begin with.

I could have a long, long list but I keep it short with:

U2
&
Radiohead

oh, and Oasis

Another vote for Kiss...a few good songs, but definitely overrated.

I'd also say that Metallica is overrated. They were good up until (and including) the 'Black' album. They haven't put out any good music since; they're kind of just a joke now.

My nominee would be (as I duck for cover) The Beatles. IMO the majority of their music was not innovative and the music that was quasi-innovative came at the end of the band's career. I find the most important thing The Beatles gave us was advances in recording techniques that led the way for other bands in the studio. Don't get me wrong, some of their music is good, but I do believe it is quite overrated.

My runner-up would be Van Halen, tied with U2 and Kiss.

Edit:
The Beatles!
Beat me to it!
Double beaten!

Oasis.

Can't stand them. It seems to be the only thing the GCSE music examiners put in the exams too, as if they think it's hip and cool.

I bet we'll get some interesting responses from Neil Peart fans...

i can agree with that... they wrote the same song 100 times.... BUT, the marketing was brilliant!

This brings up an interesting point. How much does marketing have to do with the greatness of a band? One could argue The Beatles were marketing just as heavily as Kiss ever was. Even a contemporary band like The White Stripes is heavy on the marketing.
