I bet we'll get some interesting responses from Neil Peart fans...
Everything they've released since at least 1989 has been crap. Up until the early '80s they were awesome.

Just my $0.02.

And as someone who waited in line to get my cassette copy of Metallica's "Ride the Lightning", I would say the same thing. ...And Justice For All was Metallica's last great albumn, but it came at the end of a string of great albumns. Everything since then, oddly enough also around 1989, has been crap. It's like they just stopped trying once they got rich and old.

Although it's cool to see that Newstead is still out and about.

I don't really know where to begin...

MOST overrated of ALL TIME?
U2.....plus I hate them with a passion. Frickin' Bono(r) with his hypocritical holier-than-thou horsefeces.

Also supremely overrated:
Linkin Park
Dave Matthews Band
The Rolling Stones
Nearly all rap
Nearly all popular music

Deserve all the ratings they get (love these bands!):
The Beatles
Led Zeppelin
The Grateful Dead
The Smashing Pumpkins
Pink Floyd
Radiohead

In my opinion, very underrated:
Frank Zappa (and the Mothers of Invention)
Sigur Ros

I find the most important thing The Beatles gave us was advances in recording techniques that led the way for other bands in the studio.

As far as technology goes, England was behind America by a few years. As for as techniques go, i wouldn't really give the Beatles credit for that... I would give geoff emerick the credit..

Definitely the Beatles...no contest.

No band, no matter how good, could ever live up to the amount of hype that surrounds the Beatles. Nobody else comes close. The Rolling Stones are a distant second.

If we restrict ourselves to currently active outfits I'd go with Radiohead with U2 runners up.

True, though the band popularized it. Besides, most people wouldn't know Emerick any better than they know Pi to the 40th decimal place, hence my generalization.

The Beatles overrated?

The band that recorded 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' can never be overrated.

Most overrated band? I'll add another vote to U2 (and Coldplay) Oooh, and Muse they never lived up to their hype.

So are we defining "overrated" as "bands we don't like" or something more concrete like "bands we don't like that were successful despite us not liking them"?

I don't think that commercial success immediately means that a band is "rated" highly from a music critic standpoint, it just means that during a certain period of time their music/marketing appealed to a large fan base.

Most people, myself included, don't rate bands necessarily by their creativity or impact to the art, but by how much I like their songs.

But I'm shallow that way.

Pearl Jam, definitely. And while we're at it, Nirvana too. Each band had a few really great songs and not much else. I think the quality of a band can be measured by how good their albums are as a whole. Feel free to disagree with me, but I thought both Pearl Jam and Nirvana's albums weren't up to snuff - a few good songs but not good as a whole.

Ironically, Rearviewmirror is still one of my favorite songs of all time, after all these years.
