The #1 and #3 US carriers are CDMA, so hopefully this phone will eventually be available for those networks. And in my experience (I've had data and voice plans with the big 4 carriers in the US), the CDMA networks are just so much better than the GSM.

I currently have Sprint and I get better digital coverage and much faster data service than my GSM/EGPRS service with Cingular.
(snip...)
So please, stay away from Cingular. Even if this phone has a hand that pops out to pleasure you, if only Cingular carriers... STAY AWAY!!!
Except that TDMA/CDMA is dying. GSM is emerging as _the_ standard. Europe uses GSM. Japan uses GSM. GSM is just plain the obvious standard. You cannot use a TDMA/CDMA phone outside of North America.

I wouldn't be so quick to assume that Cingular will be the only network offering this phone.

I wonder if the Windows Mobile 5.0 phone and the iPhone were butting heads for the lime light at this keynote?

iLounge reports that within the first five minutes of Motorola's MOTONOW event in Chicago, Illinois, Ed Zander read a statement from Apple indicating that the iTunes Phone would not be unveiled today.

The statement in the envelope he read ended with something along the lines of: "Love, Ed and Steve" It was supposed to be kind of funny/cutesy I think. It was hard to tell, Ed Zander was very spastic/nervous. The note was not from Apple alone. Who knows at this point but there is something odd going on. I'm putting my money on the carriers because both the E398 and ROKR were on display.

I am I the only one who noticed Ballmer and Zander making some jokes at Apples' expense? Although the one V.P. guy telling Ballmer to make sure 'WinMobile 5.0 will not be late' was pretty funny.

Late AND minor news

The iTunes Phone is pre-announced for the 17th time :D

And I don't think it will be any big deal when it DOES come.

I don't think the hardware will be Apple-designed, and I don't think the software will offer much that an iPod doesn't already. (Besides, as often pointed out, a phone doesn't make a great music player--not with low storage and better uses for your phone's battery.)

This Motorola thing is an important tiny first step for Apple, towards future potential. But I doubt it will be a groundbreaking product from our end.

I'd love to be wrong and see an Apple-DESIGNED phone with iPod ease of use :)

Meh, I just don't really care about this anymore. Even though I don't have a cell phone, and wouldn't be buying this iTunes phone regardless, I still thought it was a cool premise and was eager to see the thing. But now, bah, I've simply lost interest... :(

this is the most idiotic alotment of attention ever. this thing is going to be released and every ones going to say:: "WOW!!! ok..." and that will be the end

thought provoking

There is something else going on. Is it just me or does this smell like corporate politics at this point? No way it takes this long to design a phone. Esp when the last time they yanked it, it was only a matter of days. Something is up. the only question is who? Moto - Apple - Cell companies

My reaction to the news was much like others: another delay ! ? ! It's almost to be expected with this phone. But this post put it into a more interesting perspective. What if Mr. Jobs is secretly wrangling with carriers- maybe he is seeking the bad boy of tech rep. First he leaves IBM, then he fights the cell carriers... just one scenario of corporate politics.

I think you are right to ask what is up- and who.Considering the players: Apple's gain in this would be further entrenching itunes into culture, and driving download dollars. The down would be folks who buy an "iphone" and not an ipod (yielding less profit in hardware ? ). It's been discussed that cell carriers are not thrilled about sharing profits on cell downloads with Apple. They have revenue to loose by not selling the downloads themselves. Perhaps they are trying to make a short term contract to capitalize on the popularity of the ipod / Apple branding.

Just a few of the limitless possibilities, in a rumor sort of perspective. Personally, I have no plans to get an "iphone". I like having a music device that does that one thing really well. If they add video, I wouldn't be concerned. But play my music and have a good battery and a fantastic interface,,, and I am happy! the iphone battery and memory is highly suspect.

this phone is almost guaranteed to royally disappoint

Seriously, it might have held a few people's attention the first 2 or 3 times it was announced.....but, as it wears and grinds on through whatever floundering product development/debugging is taking place, nobody cares anymore.

This phone will fit perfectly in the "Would have been cool a year ago" family of products, along with the Sprint T608, the current line of Powerbooks, the current line of Powermacs, and the 2005 Almanac.

I truly feel bad for the guys in charge of the press releases and marketing on this thing. I bet they have the phrase "throw me a f^@%ing bone here" seared into their brains from overuse.

Seriously they need to announce the EOL simultaneously with the unveiling in 65.5 days. This bad boy is most of the way through its product cycle before ever hitting the market.

The thing is only tech types even know they're bringing it out. YOU ARE NOT APPLES TARGET AUDIENCE, ANYMORE. For better or worse they're aiming at technophobe Joe Public. I'm hoping this delay is Apple going 'look this phone looks like crap, let's get this software into a RAZR'.

For me "within 66 days" no doubts = Apple Expo in Paris (20th and 24th September 2005).
I really can't believe that Apple will release this iTunes Phone anywhere else than a "pure" Apple Event. And for the updated iBook i'm pretty sure it'll be also unveiled in Paris, because unveiling a product in the mid-summer period is like launching it in the "nowhere" , with poor publicity...
In my opinion no "new" Apple product will be launched in August... :(

The Paris expo is a good time to release things, you're right. But...

Unless it's a Motorola phone (which seems to be the case) or a joint project, and not a pure Apple product.

Apple has released major products outside of expos many times. Event publicity is one of many factors in picking a time for release. Demand and supply are larger ones. Apple also creates invitation-only "press events" whenever they need.

And a summer release is vital for education sales :)

I really hope the delay is to get up world wide supplies of the phone so we dont have delays when the market demand for this phone sucks down the early sales.

I agree though, rumoured specs are looking less and less exciting as the months pass. I hope Apple have some true surprises up there sleeves with this phone.

I think their's been too much buzz about this iTunes phone. Does Apple expect it to be a top seller like the iPod? Not that I wouldn't buy one if it worked where I live.

I sat and watched the press event last night (1am UK time) via webcast. Actually, I sat up and watched the first five minutes, and then turned off and went to sleep once the 'iPhone' was announced as not going to be announced (love the logic of that one)

A couple of things:- the announcement DID state that the phone would be announced, launched and availiable across the planet via many carriers (that means the USA plus everywhere else, like little old Europe, Japan, etc...) on the same day, within 66 days.

It also stated that the 'iPhone' WILL have its own launch event (so not MacExpo Paris)

In other news, Apple are set to update the mini and iBook lines later today (or so it's rumoured), and I recon we'll see Bluetooth as standard across the board, paving the way for some pretty funky integration with the iPhone via iTunes, and perhaps other Apple software as well. Zero config high speed mobile internet on your new iBook via the iPhone in your pocket would be nice, for example...

(but yes, I am also SO over the waiting for this thing to come out, and it's nice to know my old mobile only has to last 66 days more at most before I can finally upgrade)
