Verizon Wireless has posted a teaser for Motorola's forthcoming "Droid X" smartphone. Notably, the teaser claims that the device will feature a 4.3-inch display with a "720P Screen". The claim would appear to suggest that the Droid X's display might carry a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels.

One of Apple's claimed breakthrough features for iPhone 4 is its "Retina display" running at 960 x 640 pixels at 326 pixels-per-inch, offering improved viewing by making individual pixels undistinguishable at typical viewing distances.

The Droid X's apparent larger pixel count coupled with its larger display size suggests that it could offer a nearly identical pixel size to Apple's iPhone 4, but with the ability to display more content on its larger surface area.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs claimed during iPhone 4's introduction last week that the device's Retina display would set the standard for smartphone displays for the next several years. Motorola appears to be moving quickly to counter Apple's technological leap, however, and while the full specs of the Droid X and its display aren't yet known, it at least attempts to meet or exceed one of iPhone 4's key marketing points.

Update: Engadget, which got its hands on the Droid X just a few days ago, has confirmed that the prototype it had access to carried only an 854 x 480 screen like the original Motorola Droid released last year. It remains to be seen whether the apparent claims on the Droid X teaser page are a mistake or marketing spin of some sort, or if there is a last-minute surprise coming from Motorola.

Update 2: Verizon has modified its Droid X teaser page, replacing the "720P Screen" text with "Captures 720p", indicating that the earlier version was an error.

it really boggles me how all of these competitors try to outdo the iphone and miserably fail...it's not just about the screen or hardware, it's about the experience, the iOS and thats where others fail.

1080p output is pointless bc that is bluray which is like 20gb a movie. have fun taking up all the memory on your phone.

Well, it sure is nice to see companies competing, who wins? the consumer!

"Fanboys" on both side getting a better product from their favorite companies=:D.

There is a point where a larger screen becomes a burden. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I use my iPhone primarily as a) a phone, b) as an iPod, and c) to check email. I don't need a larger screen if it means having to carry around a larger phone. If it starts to get too big to carry in my pocket comfortably, I may as well get a small, cheap flip-phone and an iPad.

High dpi displays aren't some magical technology. I still remember 1920 x 1200 on a 15.4" Latitude. Next up, Sony.

What's the ppi on that? I'm sure that pixel density is not the first of it's kind, but it's the first time its used on a mobile device. I was surprised when Steve said that the iPhone screen was going to seethe trend for the next few years. I don't think he meant the dpi, just hi res screens are going to be the next big thin or something because I don't think Jobs is that shortsighted to make sub a wild claim.

With all these increases in screen density, I guess I am going to have get my eyeballs upgraded to the new higher resolution ones to take advantage....

They fail pretty badly by still implying that Droid is an "user-friendly" HAL in your pocket.

My friend has a Droid and they are great phones. Their OS though is very slow...

Sorry, but hardware specs are what people latch onto. It's hard to condense "the experience" into quantifiable figures people can compare to other brands. Most people don't even know what a 720p screen is, anyway- it just sounds impressive.

This is good to hear in terms as a developer...

Low Resolution of the phones really have hindered us on doing a lot of cool stuff. We couldn't use small fonts because the resolution made it to hard to read. Being able to get fine print is quite helpful. As well it helps bridge development for phone vs. PC

Props for competition, however nothing beats iOS. i'm not just a fanboy, i've been on winmo, android, blackberry, symbian, you name it. iOS just works the best.

why would you need a 720p screen? you can't tell the difference anything below 32 inches. its just like the all the hype with megapixels!!

They fail in your mind - that's a narrow and limited space. There exist millions of other people that think otherwise.
