At the rate that Android phones are being released, I think the days of Apple just being able to do a yearly update are over. While Android is still behind IMO, the gap has narrowed.

I'll be honest. I'm interested to see the quality of the display. Unfortunately, I would never buy a motorola phone.

720p could simply mean that it has 720 (progressive scan) pixels in its larger dimension. Apple could similarly claim to have a 960p screen. I'll take this with a grain of salt until we get the actual specs.

I actually like that the droid x has a higher resolution, but I think its no secret it will not do aswell as the iphone, and I say this primarily because the iOS4 is probably the best OS on a phone, and also considering the amount of applications and games available.. And anyway this isn't the first time smart phones have been competing with the iphone.. the blackberry bold was also meant to be a "Iphone killer".

Wow the iPhone 4 isn't out yet and it supposedly already getting beat.

By a product introduced on a teaser page with no specific details. Who knows when it will hit the market -- could be tomorrow, could be next month, could be next year.

It's not a matter of determining if the iPhone would be one upped in terms of specs, it was a matter of when. It always is, and yet it never really matters.

While I kind of agree. All I hear from my co-workers who just bought an android phone are, "WTF, they just released a newer android phone that's better than mine after I just bought my (insert android phone here) last month?!" :p

Still not Retina

LOL, a 1280x720 4.3 inch screen is not as dense as 960x540 on a 3.5" and even with it was 1280x720 HD DOES NOT A RETINA DISPLAY MAKE! Retina displays look like the pixels are painted on the glass not under it like every other display.

it really boggles me how all of these competitors try to outdo the iphone and miserably fail...it's not just about the screen or hardware, it's about the experience, the iOS and thats where others fail.

thats what they are missing. its not about the features. the phone just works. its that simple. look all the features that the first iphone didn't have. but the phone worked and worked well.

There is a point where a larger screen becomes a burden. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I use my iPhone primarily as a) a phone, b) as an iPod, and c) to check email. I don't need a larger screen if it means having to carry around a larger phone. If it starts to get too big to carry in my pocket comfortably, I may as well get a small, cheap flip-phone and an iPad.

Agreed. I spend a lot more time carrying my phone in my pocket than I do interfacing with it. That dictates a small device.

For me the iphone happens to strike the right balance between size and usability.

too bulky

...and bulky
My best friend has one of the phones with a 4.3" screen and has told me he hates it because it's too bulky. How in the world can you comfortably fit something that huge in any pocket besides a cargo short? I can fit my iPhone in any pocket. At some point it just gets ridiculous (bigger is not always better).

What's with phone's having HDMI outputs now-a-days? Seems like such a useless feature to me.

seems like its just as useless as a front facing camera on an iphone that you will barely use, and in order to use it you MSUT be on wifi and other person must have an iphone 4. that seems pretty useless given the fact that wifi isn't every place you go and if your home a normal person will just use a computer

Why they don't add "Fugly" as a feature?, they could sell a lot more phones if they explicitly say it.

"The New Droid X : More ugliness per inch".

Yup, when you buy Android, you are buying soon-obsolete phones. =p

LOL just realized the smalldog ad on the bottom sort of look like ped0bear.

High dpi displays aren't some magical technology. I still remember 1920 x 1200 on a 15.4" Latitude. Next up, Sony.

yet to u apple toting the retina display - u go gaga for it!

You are very bias

are u kidding me?

How great would it be to show up with a movie or tv show u downloaded from iTunes and play it on a large plasma or LCD? Yah sounds pretty useless to me!

Oh wait! When apple releases it's own hdmi out on their iPhone you will love it! Don't forget fanboys didn't think MMS or video recording was needed now look at where we are

Of course. Apple doesn't have a lock on display technology. Nobody expected this?

One disappointment is that the iPhone screen is starting to look awfully small. (Yes, I experienced the "shrinking iPhone" phenomena when I got my iPad...) Especially for those of us who are older.

Remember the speculation about the "mini iPhone"? Well, we need the Jitterbug iPhone, LOL.

BTW, one of the best screens ever is on my circa-2000 ThinkPad A31P. This was before wide-screens, so it's 1600x1200, 15". Beautiful IPS display. My 13" aluminum Macbook's display stinks by comparison. Glad to see Apple leading the charge to rediscover IPS.
