An Android tablet just seems a little weird to me. Android is an OS for people that basically want a super-custromizable and super-complicated OS on the go. Tablets are great for people that still can't set the time on their VCR (and they still have a VCR plugged in). I'm not surprised that there isn't much of a market for Android tablets.

This goes well with what Steve Wozniak said yesterday.

Motorola doesn't "get" tablets yet, but the G1 didn't sell well either. Let's look at the market again in two years, I bet it'll look a lot different.

The difference is uptake rates. Do this as an exercise. Go get all the iPhone sales data for each quarter since its release. Do the same for the iPad. Do the same for Android handsets. Estimate the best you can for Android tablets starting with CY Q4 2011 with the Galaxy Tab. Plot the data with the 0 point for each dataset being the first quarter they were on sale.

It is an interesting graph. Oddly, the Android tablet market is following a similar uptake trend as Android and iPhone sales. The iPad is not. Basically, if Android tablet sales follow the trend offered by Android handsets, the iPad will obliterate the Android tablet market before it ever gets started.
 
Once people start buying and using software (even freeware), the game is over. Most people don't want to lose what they use right now, it's their "personal software libraries".

That's why Microsoft Windows still dominates the desktop and even a free OS like Linux cannot compete. More than two decades of Windows near-monopoly on the desktop can't be pushed aside as easily as OSS folks would like to, though they did win on the server side.

That's also why the iPad currently dominates the tablet market and probably will for at least a few years down the road. The only chance competitors have is to sell a tablet for at most half the price of the iPad, with equivalent features (browser, music, videos, books). Unfortunately for them, the iPad can also run software made for the iPhone and iPod touch, so they are much more than a year late as far as "personal software libraries" go.

Apple, on the other hand, are simply competing with themselves. Their goal doesn't appear to be "beat the competitors products", it's probably "beat the previous iteration of our own product".

Twice as much RAM, faster dual-core CPU, up to 9 times faster GPU, facetime cameras... the iPad 1 just can't compare to the iPad 2. Imagine what's to come for future models.
 
Wow. All the hype and pent up anti-Apple demand and all they could muster was 100K units. Very poor. Where are the other Android tablets?

As for the RIM Playbook, that **** is DOA.

WebOS will be way to late to the game but HP has huge retail distribution.

I think Apple has won this one.
 
I don't really watch television at all, so I was just wondering if there are many commercials for tablets besides the iPad?

I can't recall ever seeing a Xoom commercial even in passing, although I have seen an iPad commercial.
 
I purchased a Xoom over the weekend it's a great device, a little heavy, but very awesome for its first pass. I used to own an iPad 1, gave it away, didn't want an iPad 2. Why do I need two devices of the same OS where the UI was designed for the iPhone (smaller device) to begin with?

  • Steve Jobs said during last years D8 conference that the iPhone actually began as a Tablet, so the UI was originally designed for the larger screen but they decided to put that project on hold and released the iPhone first.

Jobs actually started work on a tablet first, long before the iPhone. He said he had the idea or typing on a glass display in the early 2000's and took it to people on his team who invented things such as inertial scrolling. But the company was working on a phone at the time, so he applied his idea to the phone and put the tablet "on the shelf." Once the iPhone business was established they took the tablet project off the shelf, and that became the iPad.

Yet Apples Stock continues to plummet

No matter what Apple does lately or how much they sell or how good the forecasts are for sales Apple Stock continues it quick downward slide. What the HELL!! I just do not understand it ... Specially while Google stock continues to climb at an incredible pace week, after week, after week.. :confused::confused::mad:
 
Nice...I'm glad to have a more rare piece of hardware. I love mine and have no issues, it'll only get better over time.Reminds me of the days of the RAZR, that's what the iPhone and iPad have become.

Honda sells a TON more cars than BMW by a huge factor...I'd rather drive a BMW, I guess you're all happy with the Hondas :)
 
No need to take shots at the Xoom - it's actually nice little device.

Doesn't have the best polish software-wise... but to act like it is THAT far off from the iPad2 is lunacy.

And I guess it works both ways. If the iPad is a Honda, the Xoom is a Hyundai, or more and more of late, a Kia.

Just enjoy a device for what it is... these child-like torts are silly. Both are nice. The only true differentiating factor is the AppStore right now.

Nissan/Dodge driver myself, as well as an iPad/iPhone user.

We all choose the product that best first our needs and buget, and these are my choices.

I own both an iPad2 (my wife's technically) and my XOOM. I had an iPad1 since launch until I sold it for a XOOM. For me, Apps are lacking on XOOM but it's made up for with the true tablet OS and excellent first party apps.

Find me a better GMail/Email, Maps, Browser on the iPad and other stuff you will actually use most often and I'll sell my XOOM. Since I've had my XOOM, I haven't touched the iPad2. Everytime I pick it up I miss using the XOOM.
 
Not bad for a $800 dollar device, available for one carrier. I wonder what the numbers will look like after the late march wifi-only.

At least 100k people know what its like to have a really FUNCTIONAL Tablet.
 
It is because Motorola likes to tote their hardware, where as Apple's software is what kills it.

I'd argue it's more like a the difference between a Corvette and Skyline GT-R circa 1996. For 97 Corvette gets an awesome overhaul, building on all the best features and designs from the competition. People start getting excited again, then the details of the R34 GT-R are announced. By 1999 it's back to drawing board for Corvette.

Took the words right out of my mouth. I am in the EXACT same situation as you.. with the EXACT same reaction.
 
These numbers would imply that there are only 50 million Android devices with access to the Android Market (0.2% of 50 million is 100,000). That's a surprisingly low figure to me considering they are selling over 30 million devices per quarter.

Is this fragmentation or something else?
