Either way is too expensive for an entry level. It's just $30 cheaper than the higher-end iPad. No WiFi only, and goes on Verizon contract, so I supposed is CDMA only; that is a bold move when most carriers in the world use GSM. What market are they targeting really?

It is not an entry level device, 32GB wifi and 3G, upgradable to 4G and has aa microSD slot. So Ipad $729 for the 32GB 3G but not expandable. I think the price should be $699 but they are not out of the ballpark with the current pricing at $799.
It does not go on contract it is month to month the same way as the iPad here in the states. It is CDMA but will be upgraded to LTE. They still have not said how that will be handled but best guess is you have to take it to a Verizon store that can do repairs and they will do it for you.
There will probably be a GSM version for the rest of the world but they are targeting the company that has been their best partner to date on the android platform, Verizon. And from a business perspective it makes perfect sense.

Microsoft beat the Playstation and that was unthinkable.

Why I agree with the tenor of what you've said, recognize that Microsoft BOUGHT the position that they have with consoles.

That is, they've hemorrhaged money to get where they are, which is not a repeatable strategy.

The target market here is also kids, which has different buying sensibilities than the adult market does. Having a red-ring of death phenomon on a tablet (or phone) will not be tolerated.

I had no interest in the base model iPad and I paid $729 for the one I ended up with.

This thread shows me how a lot of you guys can suspend disbelief to help the cause, and how little most of the users in this forum actually know about consumer electronics.

Not everyone wants to spend that much money on a tablet. The idea of the tablet is to be accessible as well, at least in my opinion.
In a way has to replace your phone and your pc for some task, otherwise have no purpose.

Thats just you and doesn't mean its the same for others. For me 16GB is sufficient.

+1
I got a 16GB WiFi.

Current Apple 3G 32GB iPad $729

Proposed price for the 3G 32GB Motorola Xoom - $799

Two high megapixel cameras and a Flash on the rear.
1GB of Ram
Larger, higher resolution screen
Dual core CPU and faster GPU
HDMI Out and Micro SD slot
Gyro and I think Barometer
Plays Adobe Flash
Supports more video formats as standard
A more advanced brand new user interface
etc etc.......

Is all of the above not worth $70 more?
Seems like a superb bargain to me to get all that extra for only 70 dollars more than the current iPad.

iPad2 will have cameras, but overall irrelevant.
Larger screen not necessarily better, the iPad is already considered by many big already. Better resolution is a good point tho.
The new iPad might have a dual core CPU, but power is not all.
Gyro will be on the new iPad2.
And about Flash many people don't care of it.

iPad 32GB 3G is $729
iPad 64GB 3G is $829
Xoom 32GB 3G is $799(?) + Micro SD 32GB $70 = $869

Actually both companies "hemorrhaged" money. But MS began making money on the XBOX360 a couple of years ago. On the other hand, Sony just began making money on the PS3 the past year. I am not sure what can be considered as "brought". The main reason (in my opinion) for the XBOX success in the US is XBOX Live. MS made a decision with the first gen XBOX to devote a lot of time and energy building the online backbone that is XBOX Live today. They took a beating with the first gen XBOX and came back in the second one. One key thing to note, MS focus on Live which was and is a revenue generating portion of their console business.

The key for the Android market will be what will the revenue model be for the publishers/developers. The hardware can be great, but what about the content. So far the Android platform is not generating the same type of revenue flow and recent polls/studies have suggested that an iPad/iPhone user is more likely to purchase apps than an Android one.

It's all speculation on the iPad 2. We don't know what their specs will be. And you might not care for cameras, but many do -- even ones on here. There's many threads of people dying for a camera, more front but back too. And you might not care about flash but many do. And you might believe 512 is fine but I'll take the 1g. And then you end with "power is not all". You just have all these built in excuses.

But for all us, we should hope the Xoom sells, it helps us all.

And you talk about overrated. What's overrated is the app store. Remember, for the ones you can't get in the Android Market, they will Have many apps you can't get in Apples app store.

So you praise those many apps that make a difference in the Android Market, yet you don't agree on my 'power is not all' statement?

You got a point with the additional features but are incorrect with the price and capacity. The iPad 64G is $829, and the Xoom 32G will roughly be the same price in the end when you need to activate Wifi (correct me if am wrong).

In the end, these items are valued, based on what the buyer actually needs. To Be quite truthful, Adobe flash and cameras are not as useful to me as I need storage capacity more in a device than Flash.

Honestly, back in the day I used to block flash on my browser as I found it more of a nuisance than a benefit, especially when I was on my old Windows system and viruses used to be filtered through those flash based ads. And as for cameras, I think a camera merely for Skype calls is sufficient as I cant understand why someone would want to hold up a 13" device to take a photograph, and am saying this as a digital artist and photographer.

But to each his own

Piggie wrote about the 32 one not 64GB. So the price is correct.

Piggie was talking about the 32G iPad being less value than the 32G Xoom. I am merely pointing out that the value of the 32G Xoom is the same as the 64G iPad when you consider you need to pay to activate Wifi. In other words, you have twice the capacity in the iPad for the same price.

The topic of this thread is about price, so let's compare prices and what you can really get for the price mentioned

True but the issue with the Xoom is that its only in one flavor, the high end. I suspect apple's success with the iPad last year was more because they had a price point for everyone. Why would anyone want to spend that much money on a Xoom when there's other less expensive options available.

If motorola wants to compete with apple on the tablet market, pricing higher then an iPad isn't going to do it.

Agreed.

You can beat the competition in two ways, and both methods have won wars in the past.

You either offer pretty much the same, but undercut by a worthwhile amount on price.

Or you charge a bit more but totally blow the competition out of the water on specs.

Neither of which are happening right now. I think the cheap no-name clones need to come along to offer low price point models as the BIG companies just don't seem to understand.

Precisely, I'm not going to deny the fact that when i first heard of the Xoom, I was really interested, as I currently own a HTC mobile, so getting another Android device is in no way an issue for me. Like I've mentioned before I love Apple's products but I am you're regular guy on the street who wants a device based on value and what it has to offer.

Honestly if Xoom came in different flavors and prices, believe me I'd stop and think a bit more, but am not a fan of the 800 price tag, in fact that is the reason am not interested in the 64G iPad which is currently €799 here. I have other things in life to spend money on, but if I were to choose I'd go for the iPad cuz i got more value (based on capacity) for my money, but either way I still wont spend that amount on either device:(

Please use some common sense people. If Xoom 3G/4G model costs 799 dollars, then there is no way in hell wi-fi model would somehow cost 499 dollars. No.

It won't be 300 dollars cheaper.

This thing will cost 700 dollars on w-fi model only. Time will tell, but just watch.

If the company ain't talking about it because they know public will be angry or not happy with it. I can see the price at 799 dollars.

And those apps not available in the App Store are good?

I'm still not convinced that there will be developers flocking to this platform. When it's so easy to root, and most of the user base are geeks who want to root their devices and pirate apps, how will developers make any money on their work?

Although, it might not matter. From most of the posts I read around here, I imagine that Android Honeycomb users will be planning to just play with built-in widgets while they whack-off to their customized home screen that is the ultimate for them, no apps required. Oh, and notifications... Lots and lots of notifications, they really like those too. :)

But I would say $200 less is not out of the question.

That seems to be quite a generalization. Just as bad as those I see on android sites about apple users. Root is not needed to pirate apps. And most of those that root do so for complete control of their devices.
As to where they will make money I would say the ad revenue must not be too bad since Angry birds went with a free app for android and have done many updates since it came out.

Advertisements. So you get to use some of your limited data plan streaming adds. Oh wait, I almost forgot, isn't there an app for that ? To block the adds ?
