I would not be surprise to see an announcement in a few days that they are going out of business. Every day this company makes a big policy change. Who can trust them at this point?
EXACTLY!
I'm on the yearly subscription so surge pricing does not apply to me, but this is a farce. One person reported that she was charged $8 additional for Surge Pricing. THAT is ridiculous and their method for determining this is unverifiable.

And for that reason, I'm out.

Consumers with that mentality are so funny. The service is still WILDLY underpriced and cannot possibly ever turn a profit at such a low price.

If an extra $5 makes you cancel, there is no chance you were even using the service often enough to make it worth it anyway.

But it’s not just an extra $5 per month
Today's press release also reiterates on the company's plan to limit availability of "First Run Movies" that open on 1,000+ screens (which is typically any major studio release) during their first two weeks
If I can’t get tickets to popular movies for two weeks, I need to pay $15 for a standard ticket. That’s a lot more than 5 bucks. Who knows if I will save money in the long run. And moviepass has been so inconsistent with their business model, I don’t know what stunts they’re going to pull next.

I think it's more the "Straw that broke the camels back" and not the measly 5 bucks that does it for some.

It’s not about the extra $5. It’s that the service will still suck because you won’t be able to actually watch the movies you want to see. I’m not a charity for independent films. I want to watch what I want to see.

This service is one giant dumpster fire. Too good to be true. Twitter snark on their part against AMC Stubs was the first sign.

I think, even with all the new changes, MoviePass remains a super convenient service for people like me. I love going to the movies, go about once a week, and go to see most of the movies that are out, no matter if it's the opening weekend or later on cause I'm catching on. I don't know about other parts of the country but in LA, $14 doesn't even get me 1 ticket, so I'll happily keep using MoviePass and wait a couple weeks for new movies.

Too bad there’s not an AMC close to me, I’d consider their service. It’s starting to look like a good deal compared to moviepass.

The Alamo is also going to release a subscription service, but they haven’t announced the details yet. I’ll consider that too.

It was good while it lasted, the movie theaters needed to help a little by discounting the movies to moviepass for driving business to their movies but they didn’t help movie pass because they figured they could do this themselves.....hence “Harkin’s Rewards”.

I bet an analysis would show that movie goers have increased since movie pass increased in popularity and the theater companies may see a decline because of this subscribers movie pass will lose that will correlate to less people going to the movies. Double edged sword the theaters failed to hold properly.
I know I’m willing to spend more in consessions as I feel like I “got in for free”

If this means no surge pricing and I’ll be able to see new popular movies, I may sign up. But I’m going to wait and see given what’s been going on the past few weeks.

Don’t sign up. I was one of their greatest supporters and evangelists (there’s a thread on MP in the Community section and /r/MoviePassclub is also quite good), but I canceled today.
$15, no imax or 3D, no repeat movies, plus two-weeks wait, plus reduction in theatres, plus surge pricing (it’s not going away). I was fine with all the hassle to get a ticket (quite cumbersome at time), but this is too much especially considering that AMC A-List offers 3 movies a week, including IMAX and 3D, with repeat movies, possibility to reserve in advance, discounts on the insane stuff they sell, no surge pricing, discounted tickets for friends etc goes at only $19/mo...

And for that reason, I'm out.
The press release reiterates that "First Run Movies opening on 1,000+ Screens to be limited in their availability during the first two weeks." So it sounds like $14.95 will be the same as existing $9.95 plan, just more expensive.

Not sure. Last weekend I wanted to go watch a movie, any movie. ALL movies in my area were surge priced at $5.75. Check the reddit sub, everyone is quite angry about this.

Five bucks is your reason for leaving?
$14.95 is roughly mid point between two subscriptions plans from cinemas in my area, Cinemark's $8.99/month 1-movie-per-month plan (with unlimited rollover) and AMC's $19.95/month 3 movies per week plan (which includes premium format).

With 2-week restriction on new movies, $14.95/month no longer feels all that competitive.

That’s probably because you never used it. $5 extra + surge + limit + no repeat + hassle is what breaks the service.

Literally the worst customer experience (their weekly changes to the TOS and product offering began to drive me crazy). Finally cancelled when they introduced surge pricing. Signed up for the AMC product (which is FAR SUPERIOR in every way), and haven't looked back.

I almost signed up for a whole year a couple months ago. Glad I didn't. I think I'll continue paying full price on the one or two movies I see per month.

I signed up about three months ago, went to watch one movie, it was not available, so I ended up watching a movie I'd seen already. I canceled the subscription shortly after.

Then AMC released their A-List. I can check movie times, available [reserved lounge] seating, arrive 10-15 minutes after the movie starts to avoid the commercials. I don't care that I can only see three movies a week. I only see one movie a week if I'm lucky. I get to watch 3D and IMAX; I was able to see the movie I wanted to release weekend without paying anything extra. I am happy.

People talk about MoviePass like it's the gym membership model. No AMC A-List is the gym membership model. MoviePass has their own model where they don't own the theaters, movie studio, distribution, or even a substantial subscriber base. I think they overestimated the value of the user data.

I think $5 increase isn't going to help much. It'll help in that it increase funding in from their subscribers, but I think they'll lose subscribers too which will negate this increase.

We closed the three passes we have for our family yesterday. We have a small 4 screen theatre, and couldn't see a single movie all week without extra fees. Their new policies made it almost impossible to see movies for our subscription anymore. Now they are upping the price 50% all while continuing to limit what you can do with it. It was super fun while it lasted, I'll go back to not watching 99% of movies in the theatre and watching at home 6-9 months later.

Too bad, before the downturn, we were about to purchase 4 more for our kids, glad we didn't.

Come to think of it, i wonder if the rumor ipad with no headphone jack can be compared with moviepass concept. What i mean, with certain features “going away,” people would complain regardless. I hate if the jack is gone...but if they defend the jackless and complain about this.....just unsubscribe

I'm out! Most of the movies I see have been matinee for $6. I see at least two movies a month. Not worth it when there's surge pricing, family wants to see a movie I already saw, and waiting two weeks for a big release like Harry Potter, Avengers or Star Wars when you're surrounded by the potential of spoilers. Sucks for them when they change their policy again that's too good to be true and I can't get back in because their rule is 9 months wait to get back in.

Here we’re not talking about “certain features going away”. We’re talking about a total overhaul of the concept, an awful customer service, always changing TOS, and surge in pricing (both base price and “peak” charge).

Totally Apple to Orange comparison.

When Apple removed optical disk drive and upgradable RAM and storage from MacBook Pro, in exchange for improved portability, longer battery life, and retina display, some folks complained.

When Apple removed headphones jack from iPhone, it did so in exchange for improved water resistance, static home button, and better and stereo speakers.

In both cases, some customers valued lost features more than new features and/or improvements. And it's perfectly natural to feel that way.

But for MoviePass, customers are not getting anything NEW in exchange for higher subscription pricing.

To all the people in the forums who are writing things like “I’ll wait to sign up until things stabilize”: are you nuts??? Things are likely never going to stabilize. If you haven’t been using MoviePass yet, now is the time to jump in and get whatever you can out of it. Waiting just means you’ll miss out entirely.

The minute they created a plan for $6.99 a month I dove in and have never looked back. As of today I’ve seen 34 movies this year for almost nothing. If they go under tomorrow I’ll still be way ahead in this deal.

He who hesitates is lost...

Pay more, get less. It's like watching an animal die slowly. Too bad, I liked this concept for it's value. Moving forward, I think movie-goers would gladly pay $20/mo if the restrictions were taken away. 2¢

Yes, and that’s what I have done by jumping ship to AMC A-List.
