Two things for your consideration.

Plants: if you can look after a plant you can look after your 'intended'. (Try a cactus as they're easy to care for.)

Photos/pictures of trips, friends, family, etc: it'll make the room look more personal and friendly. Plus they're a good conversation starter.

(If all else fails get a female friend to help with the decorating. :) )

my decorating advice:

base of neutrals with bright colorful objects (for example we have a pretty basic dining room with a wood table, white walls, some basic shelves but we got bright red chairs to offset it; looks cool)

only framed art/posters/etc; nothing just pinned to the wall as-is - the more unique the better. as i have discovered from a thread on this very forum its pretty cheap to frame stuff if you do it yourself. i personally like framed typography but thats just me.

Ikea is a good way to get stuff that looks "designed" without killing yourself on cost. however, i would suggest that get the minimum Ikea that you need and then only buy good furniture as you can afford it.

spend the money on good quality bedding + bathroom textiles.

a place for everything and everything in its place. nothing looks worse than clutter. you can have a messy pile of crap, just make sure its a messy pile of crap thats inside a closet or in a cabinet.

under no circumstances allow your porn collection to be "accidentally" found - put it in a box in a cabinet in a closet so there is no way a guest can stumble upon it.

Looking at the sketch, not sure that the computer next to the bed is good. Desks tend to get messy as well as it being completely UNrelaxing.

Thing with studios is getting the feel that your bedroom is its own space. I've seen some fairly unique ideas to separating this space. Hard to know without actually seeing it though.

just a thought.

bachelor pad

Lose the desk & get a laptop, porn is always more enjoyable when reclining... or so i've heard. on a more serious note, go vertical, get rid of carpets if you've got them, and always remember to shower regularly.

I definitely need the desk for homework and whatnot.

Here's a sketch so you get an exact idea of the layout.

Thanks again for all the great suggestions.

I've recently found that using a Swiss/exercise/pilates ball instead of a desk chair works really well. As long as you have room under your desk, it can just be rolled away underneath and out of sight. It takes a little getting used to, so maybe find a friend with one hanging around and ask to borrow it for a couple of days to see if it works for you.

Go and get some nice bedsheets. I don't mean expensive, but something bright, but without being tacky. Even Ikea may have something you want. I think having nice bedding is important. If you don't have nice bedsheets, that entire half of the room is going to look crap.

And if you don't, make your bed. One of my ex-girlfriends told me that regardless of how clean your room actually is, your room will always look messy if your bedsheets are a mess, whereas if your bed was nice and neat, your room will look somewhat clean even if there's some clothes on the floor and your desk is messy. I don't always make my bed, but if I had a bachelor pad and it made my entire flat look nicer, then sure, of course I would. :)

Get a coat rack so that your guests have space to put their coats when they come. You don't seem to have a lot of space for many jackets, and it's better than asking everyone to throw their jackets on your bed.

This is exactly my problem, iBlue. I'll be moving into a studio in November and I've seen so many good ideas that I don't know which one to use! :) Thank goodness I have some time to figure it out.

I'm gunna put shelves and a hanger in the storage room. It's got the space for it and I have no other use for that room :)

i have seen or read somewhere that 'made' beds actually are incubators for the critters that lurk within. unmade beds air out and desiccate the tiny mofo's. alternate suggestions may include a screen for the offensive area or a quick tidy up before the intended arrives.

That sounds like something a sloppy person would say to excuse their untidy bed manners.

Ikea is a step up for me :)

I dunno, maybe the UK Ikea stuff is better quality than the USA Ikea stores. A table for 4 here is between £100 - £500.

Here, there's choice of MFI, Argos, World of Leather, etc etc for ***** furniture for squalid housing inhabited by rats. (£10-£100 for a table.) Avoid at all costs.

For posh people, there's Habitat, John Lewis, Selfridges, Conran etc which all do nice but very expensive furniture. (£500 - £1000+ for a table)

Ikea is in the middle, cheapish but nice. Still some ***** there tho.

Tip for cheap quality - buy the cheapest stuff you can find that's all wood - i.e. no plywood, no MDF, no chipboard. I've done that in my flat, and it looks not too bad. Mostly birch and pine stuff.

More healthy too - all these fake woods are sawdust held together by glue which sometimes can offgas toxic fumes.

Here's what i managed to do with my semi-apartment like bedroom. Good sound system is key :D
