The law used to be that pubs closed at 11pm (they often ring a bell at around 10:50 to signify 'last orders', then kick you out at 11:20).

The law changed a few years back, and now pubs can get a licence to open later. Popular pubs often stay open till midnight during the week, and often later at the weekend.

It's really easy to buy alcohol in the UK. All supermarkets have a big selection, corner shops have lots, 'off licence' (liquor stores) are common. The only limitation is that shops can't sell alcohol before 10am or after 11pm on a Sunday.

If I just wanted some regular bitter (ale), a good mid-range choice would be Fuller's London Pride. This is brewed in Chiswick (West London) and is a popular and tasty beer.

While you're here, you should take a trip to Borough Market. This is a great food and drink market near London Bridge station (quite easy to get to from Kensington). It's open Thursday, Friday, Saturday - and it's good to go at lunch when they sell hot food.

There's a great beer shop there which has a massive selection of bottles from the UK and the rest of the world. They also have their own specialist pub that sells some great beers. I was there last weekend - here's a few photos:

Wow that looks amazing. I am DEFINITELY going to check this out. Thanks!:D

I don't generally buy beer from supermarkets but I don't think regular supermarkets sell much bottled real ale, also, if you wanted to pick up a "6 pack" from corner shops there's usually only 4 cans or some beers come in packs of 6 bottles and your mainly looking at standard largers. I love my real ale but when it comes to buying bottled beer from a shop I personally find budweiser quite refreshing when its warm, watching a game on TV. Quite like Grolsch, Kronenbourg, and San Miguel as well.

I think I just threw up in my mouth a little bit

Bud and Bud Light need to be served cold~!!!;)

haha ok I can accept that. How is the music scene there?

My friend said everyone over there is huge into techno/dubstep, which is not really my cup of tea (HA!)

Are there any good live music pubs or clubs or places to go (not sure if you guys do it the same as we do with local bands playing in bars).

I'm really big into jazz, rock, and folk music. Really not sure what to expect here.

Your friend only knows people into techno/dubstep then. London is huge with pretty much every musical style represented. Small bands may well play in bars (especially around Camden). Other than that there are concerts of all sizes pretty much every week.

I was thinking $100 a week for groceries/transportation... but that converts to only about £60 a week and idk if that is enough.
That is not enough at all, double it imo... Underground as much as you can as it is cheaper too also don't eat out as much :)

Money saving tip: don't tip in bars. It's not expected at all and the bar will absolutely never buy you a drink back (unlike the US).

Yeah I remember reading this in one of my travel books I picked up.

You don't have to tell me twice not to tip, I'm all over that ****!:D

I read it as he finds a cool Bud refreshing when it's warm weather.

On a beverage note, get used to tea. We drink lots of coffee here too, but we are a nation of tea drinkers as well. There's nothing more civilised than a proper cup of loose leaf tea brewed in a pot. If your blood vessels can take it try some proper fish and chips from a good chippy.

Word of warning, be prepared for people to tease you about being stupid. I'm afraid the stereotype here is the stupid American! We realise you aren't all actually thick, but will poke fun at you in a friendly way. Also learn to hate the French, then you'll fit right in! :D

I actually love tea. Tea and milk is my preference, my mom has been drinking this ever since I was a little kid. I also love some fresh fish and seafood. Fishing is one of my hobbies as well.. so I'm really excited to try some fish and chips.

And I already hate the french! :D

I wonder if I can get by just pretending to be Canadian and just say "eh?" a lot. Nobody would know!!

So I just landed this morning. Trying to get over the preliminary jet-lag but should be adjusted in a day or two.

welcome in the UK and ....looking for a pub ..that means you did already spend your weeks budget ,but i heard living on baked beans and toast for long periods of time is possible without side effects :D

and remember there are areas of london you should avoid as a civilized member of society , unless you want to buy guns or drugs or cheap cigarettes/tobacco ...Brixton, Harlesden, Peckham,Stoke Newington,Hackney,Kentish Town,Stockwell,Camberwell, Camden ..... any part really where you spot hoodies and council estates, and dont look like a rival gang member , in the UK the coppers are unarmed (apart from some special units)...the gangs not :D

Oh good - some helpful community advice from our resident Klan member.

OP, you should definitely check out Camden, its a really interesting place.

If you want an evening of drink and live bands the the Swan in Stockwell is pretty good too.

It must have got less dangerous then. This is the conversation I had with the bouncer a few years back:

Him: "You been here before mate"
Me: "Yes"
Him: "So you've got a knife on you then"

I did not but fortunately there was no need for one that evening :)

Welcome to the UK mate ;)

I've absolutely loved reading this thread.

Sorry for stealing your thread sou1 so1di3r but I'm moving to London too. :)

Can anyone give me a rough idea of how much I should expect to pay for a gym membership in London?

Varies greatly. A gym run by the relevent London Borough can be ok, and I have seen around £30-£50 a month. Then you get the private chains (Fitness First, David Lloyd etc) that cost a bit more, I was quoted £75 but it varies by area, guess £60-£100. Then there are the more exclusive clubs with spas etc where the sky is the limit!

Remember there are often deals and you can negotiate. Always read the T&Cs as UK gyms are getting into trouble with the OFT a lot about harsh terms.
