Varies greatly. A gym run by the relevent London Borough can be ok, and I have seen around £30-£50 a month. Then you get the private chains (Fitness First, David Lloyd etc) that cost a bit more, I was quoted £75 but it varies by area, guess £60-£100. Then there are the more exclusive clubs with spas etc where the sky is the limit!

Remember there are often deals and you can negotiate. Always read the T&Cs as UK gyms are getting into trouble with the OFT a lot about harsh terms.

Thanks, that helps a lot. :)

It also varies a lot by location. If you want access to a chains central London gyms then expect to pay more than if you just want access to the ones in the cheaper areas.

The various London Borough gyms certainly offer the best value for money. Many are actually run on behalf of the Boroughs by a third party company who offer a very competitive scheme. I would note the price still varies by location: in Tower Hamlets where I live all gyms are £27.95 on this scheme...

I saw those. That sounds pretty good. :) I don't really like the big fancy gyms.

and remember there are areas of london you should avoid as a civilized member of society , unless you want to buy guns or drugs or cheap cigarettes/tobacco ...Brixton, Harlesden, Peckham,Stoke Newington,Hackney,Kentish Town,Stockwell,Camberwell, Camden ..... any part really where you spot hoodies and council estates, and dont look like a rival gang member , in the UK the coppers are unarmed (apart from some special units)...the gangs not :D

What kind of foolishness is this? Brixton has some great, inexpensive restaurants. Obviously the go-to place for Jamaican food, but I also had the best sashimi I've ever had in London at a Japanese place in Brixton.

American football is ridiculous. Look at all that protection they have yet in rugby they wear nothing!

Rugby is for real men!

It's easy to say that without realizing how wrong it is. Did it occur to you that it's possible that the mere fact they're wearing padding causes the tackler to tackle even harder and more recklessly?

Saving money in London.

Many visitors find London fairly expensive, these suggestions might help:

1. To save money avoid buying food and drink in Central London or the West End, where possible.

2. When shopping visit boroughs away from Central London, they tend to be cheaper.

3. Use the buses, load up money on an Osyter card and see London that way.

4. Plan your trips via the TFL web site.

5. Visit parts of South London or along the river, it is cheaper than the West End and full of sights.

Hey all, just dropping by to give an update on my experience thus far.

I am loving the city.

We are staying in Chelsea, and I'm sure many of you know, this is pretty much a rich part of the city. Everything is very expensive here but not much I can do about that.

Just finished my first week of classes, really fun stuff. Haven't gotten to explore a lot yet as we have been doing a lot of group stuff with our program.

Our group went to the Criterion Theatre and saw "39 Steps" on Monday night, which was absolutely hilarious.

Last night a buddy and I ventured to Royal Albert Hall (it's only about a 30 min walk for us) and caught the Pittsburgh Symphony at the Proms. They played 3 pieces, and the last one was Mahler's 5th Symphony... absolutely incredible.

We got the £5 day of standing tickets and were in awe of the crowd, and their enthusiasm for such rich classical music. The crowd was loving it and was cheering so loud at the end we got en encore... then a second encore.... then even more thunderous applause and stomping of the feet brought a third encore. It's something that I don't think I've ever seen back in the states.

We are heading back tonight for the late night Proms 71: A tribute to Stan Kenton as we are both jazz aficionados and we have a large exposure to his works as our jazz director back home loves him and we always play his music in Jazz Band.

I'm very excited to explore the city more, and our class this morning, taught by a British professor (btw we are studying at Heythrop College if anyone has heard of it) was Anthropology, but it turned out to be more of a music class with emphasis on jazz, blues, and rock (which is MY kinda music!!). Our professor gave us a list of music pubs and clubs to check out for jazz which is also my area of study back home.

I cannot wait to check out the music scene here!

Also, if any macrumors members happen to be around the area and wanted to to meet up for a drink sometime in the next 2 months, I would be more than happy to get a locals perspective on the city (don't worry I'm not a murderer).

I'll check back in this thread later. I love having class only Monday, Tues, Wed,... 4 day weekends to explore the city! Now if you will excuse me, I'm to explore the Kings Road some more.:D

Cheers!

lol. Well it's hard to say rugby players are wimps but it would be entertaining to see what would happen when a rugby player is mauled by Julius Peppers or someone else who is freakishly fast and weights 270 pounds.

Da Bears :D Cannot wait to get my tickets to the hand-egg match! :D

Yeah... as long as the group is decently competent (ie has a good lead trumpet player and accompanying orchestra) Mahler 5 is amazing :)

The Pittsburgh symphony did it justice. The crowd was in awe. Most enthusiastic crowd I have heard in along time.

Just bought some tickets to see some solo shows this week. Chris Thile (mandolin) Tuesday and G Love (guitar) and Thursday at Union Chapel.

Checked out the Globe Theatre today for our British Theatre class, and also had lunch at this super fancy Indian restaurant called Bombay.

yum yum yum
