Hey!!!

I posted this in "General Discussion" this morning!
:p

MPEGLA on "Your Mac Life"

From MacMinute.com:
Your Mac Life to discuss MPEG-4 licensing debate
April 3 - 15:05 ET  Your Mac Life , an Internet-based Mac radio show, has announced its lineup for tonight's broadcast (21:00 - 23:00 ET), which will feature Larry Horn, Vice President of Licensing for the MPEG LA group, who will discuss the issues surrounding MPEG-4 licensing, which Apple has accused of holding up the release of QuickTime 6 and other MPEG-4 compatible products. Other special guests will include cartoonists Nitrozac and Snaggy of GeekCulture and Alias|Wavefront President Doug Walker. Host Shawn King will also announce the first leg of his Mac User Group Tour.

Tune in, turn on....you know the drill...

I just hope we get some definitive answers and a timeframe...

I won't be able to watch this, so someone post the good bits after the show. They couldn't come out and say when QT6 is going to be available, could they?

Yeah, saw that, but I was wondering what some of the other things they talked about. The President from Alias/Wavefront might have had something good to say, especially since they just had the big drop in price and how that might effect the Mac 3D Animation world.

Does anyone know much about what MPEG LA are proposing? It sounds like we'd have to pay for QuickTime 6 if they got their way... And does anyone know whether QT 6 will be able to play DivX movies??

j763,
MPEGLA will not control the distribution of Quicktime 6, just the media that it will play. Apple owns the Quicktime software, and while QT is the basis of MPEG4, that doesn't mean that they have handed over the rights to MPEGLA. QT player will be free as always, the Pro version will probably still be $30. The only charges being discussed are the streaming charges incurred by the people providing the streaming content...if they are remunerated...(it still sounds fuzzy to me)

Several people have asked about DivX playback in QT6. As far as I know it won't be supported officially, but there will still be codecs that you can get to make it work. MP4 should kill DivX, thus making QT6's support for it pointless.

I don't understand a lot about streaming video but I do know I'm excited about MPEG4. My coworker has been wanting a way to communicate with his friend in California and although he won't be able to see his friend (he has a PC), he'll be able to send a stream from his DV camcorder

I'm the one who convinced him the mac was better so I feel responsible for him not being able to talk to his friend--but hopefully Quicktime Broadcaster fixes this... sort of... hehe

Who knows... the next iApp maybe iCommunicate :)

QT6 will cost $4million in licensing fees to MPEGLA - just to distribute...

QT6 will not be able to play old Divx files... it might be able to play the new version... but prob not without some conversion
