Just tried to import the AVI file into Premiere Pro CC 2015: Error, the file has no audio and no video stream. How come that I can see the video nicely on the screen with any program that can play AVI movies? I don't get it...

Because Premiere Pro doesn't have access to the same set of codecs as those other players. (Editing software needs to be stable and allowing any Tom, Dick or Harry system codec into the fold puts that at risk.)

MPEG Streamclip is from a previous software generation and hasn't been updated in a long time. There are a bucketload of posts in this sub-forum about it not working properly on Retina displays.

When you 'Export' you are always recompressing. Even if you set the export bit rate to match the source bit rate, you are still recompressing. You'll have to judge whether the image or audio quality has taken an unacceptable hit.

To avoid recompression you can use the 'Save As' command (as moongravy suggested). Sometimes MPEG Streamclip won't be able to complete this request, sometimes your preferred playback software won't play the resulting file properly. The reasons for this take a lot of explaining.

I could open the AVI in MSC when PERIAN was installed.
The I cut and trimmed some parts and then could export it as MP4 as shown in this video.
I limited the data rate to 1 Mbps and got a 475 MB file.

I do not have any problems OPENING the file in MSC, the problem is that the display window does not show it! I am running it on a MBP 13" Retina and latest version of Yosemite, never needed any Perian stuff...

I opened and trimmed 5 such videos successfully in MSC, exported them as AVI with unchanged quality by limiting the data rate to 2 Mbps. When opening the 6th video the problems with the display started, see screenshots above. So the problem is not Perian or any other codec, it is MSC itself that really screws things up. And yes, I have restarted the MBP and there are no other "exostic" apps running...

But did you try Perian at lest to see if that is the problem?

With Perian installed I can sort of use the process described earlier in the video, i.e. I exported an MP4 video with reasonable size and quality. However, the GUI of MSC is still a bit "odd" on the retina screen, the window has a smaller window inside and the controls for the timescale behave very odd and cannot be handled easily. Whatever, the task can be fulfilled, although I would wish for a more straightforward process. Thanks for all the suggestions and help, let's close this case, unless somebody can come up with a real good solution for the Retina problem...
