I'm not sure that Apple would do this on the MacBook before the MacBook Pro though, the Pro/PowerBook had two fingered scrolling before the iBook/MacBook line did.

For the record, the two-fingered scroll first appeared in the iBook before the Powerbook. That's one of the many reasons I bought my iBook instead of a Powerbook at the time.

Old news.. ;)

Multi-touch is used with iPhone, iPhone runs Leopard, Leopard is to ship in October, new hardware at time of Leopard release...

Does that help?

Haha, I was just kidding...in response to the poll "sick of iPhone rumors". you are quite right, though.

I would buy it if this comes to market.

Imagine walking around with a computer that is as cool as the ones seen in the movie, Minority Report.

A "multi touch" trackpad (i.e. what we already have, but with more gestures supported such as pinch-resizing) is fairly likely, and would be a welcome development. I'd have guessed it could be done in software, the most likely change is that they'll make the trackpad a lot larger. This would be an excellent unique-selling point for Apple laptops.

I don't see the attraction of a multi-touch touchscreen on a laptop. Vertical or near vertical touchscreens would be tiring to use, horizontal screens are an ergonomic nightmare. There is no easy way that I can see to effectively merge an input device and a screen in a static device. (Though it works well in handheld devices).

We won't see this in a MacBook since they just got an update not too long ago. A new type of MacBook Mini with an 11" display? Maybe the true mobile computing experience with a Mac ultra portable notebook? :D

This is what the rest of the Apple community has been waiting months for.

zooming in and out of pictures by scrolling up and down is already fine by me. I dont think pinching my touchpad will suddenly enhance my computing experience....

And if they ever did make a multi-touch macbook, I would feel terrible for the OCD people.

They would have to make the touch screen be able to ignore a cleaning cloth. I can see it now... one hand touching the screen followed by my other hand holding a lint-free wipe. I imagine huge deltoids :D

I don't think most of the posters here are getting it...

The "technology"
indicated in the article would be simply to extend the range of gestures that the trackpads support. So in addition to the (now) standard gestures: tap to click, double-tap to double-click, two finger scrolling, etc, they would also add "pinch", the "flick" gesture, etc.

This doesn't seem that far-out to me. I wouldn't be surprised if they could add it to existing system with a driver update.

Quite possible to have a display touch-pad similar to the iPhone, however cost will justify that it will be limited to the "Pro" line for the time being.

Sounds interesting, however I require physical keys or buttons for feedback, this was one of the drawbacks that the iPod 3G faced, plus the battery drain would only lower the portables life.

Having a Multi-Touch screen is a terrible idea for consumer computing. Will see more benefit in military applications.

Adding more gestures to the track-pads capabilities sounds plausible.

get us a cintiq quality wacom support instead

a macbook or macbook pro tablett would be superrawesome

crunchgear is such a lame site. Not only it publishes stupid rumors, but it actively encourages piracy, and publishes regularly articles on how to do so without being caught.
But it doesn't prevent these bastards from taking the money from all the ads in their sites..
yeah.. share the wealth, but only when it's other people's wealth

Can't the flick gesture be done solely by software? Just change the way how the page scrolls. I can already "flick" in coverflow with two fingers.

The only two gestures that seem useful are pinch and flick. Both of which I think could be done via software (just added to leopard?)

Man, if they are getting at some sort of Macbook (any version) with a trackpad screen to be touched that changes with program, they are too late. Nintendo already did this in a Gameboy (one of the versions). I thought it used a stylus though. At any rate, a laptop computer that allows input similar like a phone has got to be the next big thing in 1992. I swear, will this piece of techno wizardry also browse the world wide web via magic, without a wired modem?

Multitouch trackpad, what a brilliant guess!

Well for the Nintendo fan-boys, the Nintendo DS uses a touchscreen and the DS is NOT a GameBoy and your post really makes no sense to me, last time I checked this was 2007 not 1992.

iPhone does not run leopard lol, it runs a custom version of osx with some features that will be available in leopard e.g. coverflow.
some people, i dont know where you get your info from

Perhaps there will be a screen in the touchpad, or a second screen on the laptop?

a second screen would not be a good idea bc you have to worry about scratching all the time, unless they use iphone glass...

i guess you've never used an iphone before, because i learned to type in 5 mins...

Wow...half the people in this thread didn't even read the OP or the article!

I can easily see this happening; it's nothing more than a software update that would let you resize pictures by pinching the touchpad and certain applications might recognize a flick gesture (like iPhoto when looking at photos). It'll be a footnote on a spec sheet though, nothing big.

Imagine your Macs' screens as suddenly magically having multi-touch technology. Great. Problem is, all your GUI stuff has to be changed to be natural for fingers. Try hitting the menu bar items. Or the scroll bar. Resize the windows. It'd be a pain, and besides, you could use the keyboard and mouse anyway. For apps designed to use multi-touch, clicking on multiple items or doing stuff with both hands would be neat - but your Mac would still have a keyboard and mouse/trackpad, so it won't be so radical.

Ah, have people already forgotten that one of Leopard's features is resolution-indepedent interface? You can turn up the size of all aspects of the interface without turning down the resolution. PERFECT for multitouch, don't you think? :)

It is a software update, but people are speculating about a second screen
