so how does the iphones screen functionality differ from the current track pad available technology, surely its just a software enhancement, as mentioned you can already use two fingers, why wouldnt you be able to pitch?

They're both capacitive technologies...I can't see any reason why the gestures on the iphone can't be implemented on the trackpad of existing MacBooks...just a driver update. OS X already has gestures built-in, right??

might be a good idea for a tablet...

I think multi-touch is a very practical interface for small screens like that of the iPhone, but I couldn't see a full macbook (pro) with it. maybe if they made the long rumored tablet with it, it wold be great...7" or something very small and expensive with another incredible 160 dpi screen.

No Multitouch screen.

I have seen the future...

Apple will never make any laptop with a multitouch screen. Nobody likes a dirty screen and that's what you'll get when you touch your screen. The iPhone is different because you can clean it with your shirt and a thumb, but to clean a 15" screen is a different story, so no screen touching... ever.

Instead, they may develop a bigger trackpad with multitouch ability (which is already present today on all macbooks). Maybe that trackpad will be divided, one smaller area for cursor movement and another for multitouch input.

Another cool way could be that the complete keyboard/trackpad area of the laptop could be a multitouch surface. When you need a keyboard you just make a gesture and backlit keys emerge from the surface giving a keyboard only when needed.

What do you think?

It sounds like many here do not see multi touch making it's way onto the Mac, my first impression of the Leopard feature set was that it was the gateway into a touch interface. Coverflow never made alot of sense to me until I saw Steve Jobs flicking through it with his fingers on the iPhone. Seeing Coverflow in new places in OSX makes me think it's coming down the pipe and onto a Mac of some sort.

there is absolutely no new hardware in this, lol, they could do it now if they wanted to... its just a software update that would understand new gestures... all trackpads(not just mac ones) can see more then one finger, but the microsoft software doesn't use it... I know a guy who installed Linux on his laptop, and got a peice of software which could detect all the fingers... it wasn't an apple laptop for the record.

so, it'll be the same trackpad you all know and love, but with a few new gestures

Modifier key

I could see multitouch working quite well on a MacBook or MacBook pro if a modifier key was used for multitouch. For navigation around the screen, a single finger would be used as normal, to scroll the screen, the 2-finger drag method comes into play and for multitouch, a command/option-type keypress activates it while the key is down, release the key to return to normal mode. Would cut out a fair degree of screen navigation in Photoshop, that's for sure, and actually, I wouldn't mind that setup completely replacing the keyboard/mouse arrangement on a desktop as well (new iMac?) as it would keep both hands in one place without getting your mouse cord in a twist!

"Introduced multitouch on iPhone, what about for the Mac?"

Steve: "Makes sense for the iPhone, not sure it makes sense in the Mac. Classify that as a research project."

Guess we won't be seeing multitouch in any macs anytime soon :(

the black bezel is nice, but i would prefer if they use it for multitouch or something
