I've been a big U2 fan over the years, and I can certainly understand that. But I have to say, the more I've learned about the man, the more I do respect him. He can be very, very, very obnoxious. He can be very overbearing. But the guy has and continues to dedicate a tremendous amount of effort to try and make the world a better place. Sometimes he misses the mark, and not everything he does on this front is perfect by a long shot, but the guy refuses to stop caring and trying and he's not unwilling to pivot when something doesn't work.
Also, as a performer, I have seen very few who are so utterly and completely giving of their all to the performance. I've seen him perform in some really awful circumstances where he was exhausted and panting between songs, but he still just kept going and pushing the whole show through. He's been exhausted after tremendous amounts of travel to perform or be at an event, and any other act would've dialed it in, but Bono never does that. I work in the music industry and have seen and interacted with tons of acts, and I really can't say the same about many others. U2 is as big as they are still after all these years largely because they have one of the most relentless frontmen around.
And lastly, he's also an incredibly humble and generous man when you interact with him in person. I know many people who have met him over the years, but I know one person who had a unique story after meeting him at a conference he appeared at, and he ended up hanging out with this person and other conference attendees all day. He even went to dinner with them that night like he was just any other guy, not at all with the attitude or presence that you'd expect from one of the most recognizable international celebrities. He got along with them well and just made the most of his time with other strangers like everyone else there. And none of these other people were even remotely close to celebrity status; they were just normal working class people, and he had no obligation or expectation to hang out with them. But he did, he wasn't at all showy about it, and each of the people that spent time with them that day couldn't believe how friendly, engaging, humble and flat out down to earth he was in such a simple setting.
Believe me, I get it, and plenty of other U2 fans do as well. Many of us quietly groan through some of what he says at shows too. But hard as it may be to take at times, if we had more celebrities in the world like Bono, it'd be a much, much better place.

Oh, and I don't think for a second U2's new album is shipping with iPhone 6. Come on. Maybe U2 will play the event and announce the album, but that's as far as it'd likely go. It'd be cool if this was a free download for iPhone 6 buyers though, but I certainly wouldn't bet on it.
