Apple and Nanosys

If this does pan out to be true, I would put big money on them using quantum dot technology from Nanosys. It's pretty well known that Apple has never been a proponent of OLED and they are just not affordable or proven at larger sizes. Apple also obviously likes to be games changers as we have seen so many times and Nanosys's technology really seems to be just that.

It will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

Knowing Apple, it will probably only be 720p and have no HDMI inputs...

A lot of TV's launched today are still only 720p. Unless it had that crucial "1080p" label, it's 720p. I just bought a new TV yesterday, and while shopping, I even saw brand new 42 inch slim plasma TV's that weren't 1080p.

You're all missing the point

TVOIP. If Apple gets in, it will change the business completely by replacing the existing market will something more flexible, powerful, and within a new or converged with an present ecosystem.

Goodbye cable companies, maybe even DirecTV if they get it right. I suspect the massive data centers are about more than just your music collection and movies. The cloud is going to be your provider of programming.

So what's the point? Just integrating an Apple TV in a TV? Given the rate of change of technology, I prefer my TV to just be a dumb display - it's easy enough to swap $99 external boxes as technology improves, and a lot harder to replace 50+" TV's every couple years.

Then don't replace. If it works - don't fix it. I really don't see a point in chasing buzzwords and slightly better resolution or something along those lines.

Who asks you to replace your TV's every couple years?

Point being, even if Apple could sell 1 TV per home to a minimum of 50,000 in 1 - 2 quarters, they could easily end up making a fortune in the TV industry.

Meh. I can't see Apple getting into the TV business just for the hell of it. If/when they do, they'd have to offer something that provides a compelling advantage to other TVs and fits in with their larger business model. A TV with a built-in Apple TV won't cut it.

Exactly! So the question isn't why would Apple do this. The question is what will the product be like? Obviously if they do make a TV it will change the game in some way or they won't bother!

There won't be a "built-in AppleTV". Think outside the box. If Apple makes a television set there won't be a need for an Apple TV.

I currently have two Vizio smart televisions with WiFi and built-in internet apps plus an external port that can store SD cards that hold up to 64GB of data.

Put IOS 6.0 on that television and there is a LOT of potential.

Layers that have gaming,audio/video libraries and networking with Apple products would be a great product that could be updated any time without adding any hardware to the television.

...and that was kind of my point. Apple has never delved into a new field without a reason to do so. I'm not sure iOS, some games, and FaceTime is enough for them to justify a TV. They pursue new markets when they can create a new experience and not just release another mp3 player, phone, or tablet that is Apple branded.

It is an interesting idea

Like many others, I don't see Apple doing this but then the thought of a "Smart TV" from apple could possibly get people running to their nearest Apple store to buy the latest greatest Apple product to change the world.

The smaller $99 Apple TV has some obvious advantages as already pointed out, it costs much less to upgrade your hardware at $99 compared to $1500-$2000. Obviously Apple can update the software over the internet but we all know that eventually the hardware will become outdated.

I could see them doing it though if they viewed our current TV providers (DirectTV, DishNetwork, Cable TV providers) as they did the Cell Phone providers, partnering with one of them to replace the current set top box with a Compatible Apple BOX that provided an advanced UI and other services along with the standard programming. But again this can be done with a box, no need to upgrade the entire TV.

This could offer some advantages to the content providers though. No longer would they have to deal with web based streaming program providers like Hulu. They could provide all their content through Apple Boxes including streams of shows with the original commercials. The software could also be set to not allow you to fast forward through commercials unless you paid an additional fee.

While I doubt it will happen that is not saying there aren't possibilities.

I want my iTV

 9 days to copy and manufacture a clone? LG is impressive!

no way..

Apple won't be in the TV business, this is foolish to think.. Too many competing companies with narrow margins.. There is no point, just provide a HDMI box (like they do) and your doing the same thing.. They could also make a wireless camera to connect to a new apple tv and solve the FaceTime solution also, without the need for a new tv..

Make a beautiful, 32" aluminum TV. Integrate it with Apple TV and an app store. Sell it for $999.

Who would buy that? Millions.

Apple thrives in low-margin industries by differentiating and selling at a premium.

Except it will probably be $1999, but the Appleonians will be sleeping out for a week to get one. And you'll have to buy all programming from Apple.

A TV would be stupid. Yeah, ios6 on a tv would be nice but if it can't be updated to ios7, then what? A $100 box is easier to update than a $500 or more tv.

But Appleonians will gladly pay thousands to upgrade their tv every year.

It has to be said again, this TV BETTER NOT BE rectangular. Rectangular TVs already exists. If Apple puts their name on a such a device, or any device that looks similar to existing TVs they will be BLATANTLY COPYING. This TV cannot look similar to anything on the market. By Apple's logic, this is considered blatantly copying. So if they do it, Apple will show themselves to be the hypocrites that they are. The blind followers who think it is ok for Apple to do such a thing will also show themselves to be the biased blind followers that they say they are not. Remember it was Apple who first decided that no one else can make a rectangular shaped phone or a tablet. Only because Apple felt they did it first, which they didn't of course. So you live by the sword, you die by the sword. Can't wait to see the world's first circular, triangular, or any non-rectangular TV. Your move Apple.

Yes it will be copying, but the Appleonians will say it's revolutionary. And copying is ok when you improve something. And Steve had the idea for a tv before he was born anyway.

LG is the master of extremely fast copying. Designing a phone in 9 days is a piece of cake for them.

My response was to the person that said Apple copied the LG Prada.

If it's good for the goose it's good for the gander.:)

Connect the dots...

I think the rumors about Apple introducing a whole new product line, introducing a TV subscription service, and this rumor of a true Apple TV set are all one and the same. Obvious, no?

Can you show me where I said that Apple copied LG? Thanks.

I said that there were phones like iPhone by when the iPhone was presented.

Even reversing the roles, it would be too fast to copy and manufacture for sale in just 3 months. Sounds like convergent implementations because of the technology.

In the UK I would think a tv by apple would bomb like a stone.

TV pricing is cut throat now, with excellent looking and spec models from all the leading tv brands at rock bottom prices.

50" for £499 type prices Inc sales tax.

Or course you can pay more but even the high end ones are a fraction of what they used to be.

Sure make an apple tv with an aluminium back and some glass on the front, but don't expect to compete on the high street.

We all have sky, virgin media or free view over here.

Seems a waste of time to move into this Market really.

I guess alot of people wilk shell out for an tv as thin as an ipad wich works together with your ipad an iphone (remotes, game controllers etc) with airplay and iSight. Will shutoff when leaving the room on iphone coordinates. Show you notifications. Includes an appstore and what not?

Too many competing companies with narrow margins - is that why Apple never got into the mobile phone business?

As other have said, it really makes sense for apple to just make a box to do all this. The box can be cheap, and easy to upgrade when a new model appears.
And cheap so all people can consider buying it.
You build it into a $1000 tv and then you hit all sorts of problems.
Who will buy a whole tv when a small box to their current tv does the same job, are they going to sell the tv every couple of years?

I dont think consumers in general have the mindset to keep changing TVs all the time.
