hit home button while on a skype call on a jailbroken device.
That surely DOES look like a bug and not smething made on purpose by Skype.

Obviously, it's a "bug" that affects only jailbroken devices so as far as they are concerned, it's not a bug at all.

Skype have always tried their best to spoil the jailbreak party. It seem's likely that if Skype detects the phone is jailbroken (it can) it will disable backgrounding.

I don't really see why they would care..

I don't know either to be honest. I used to think it was because they didn't want us using it over 3G but that's not an issue any more so I'm clueless. All I know is they've been difficult in the past and Saurik has had to update mobilesubstrate with awkward workarounds just for Skype.

So is backgrounding still not working for anyone else? I've restored and rejailbroken. Everything was fine for a while then suddenly all apps don't background. I open settings, navigate a few menus in, close the app, reopen and it'll be like i never opened it. This is getting frustrating and I can't seem to pinpoint if it's an issue with mobilesubstrate or the jailbreak itself as I don't have the patience to keep restoring and jailbreaking.

Also having log out issues with Skype. But then again, it gives you a warning that Skype only supports non-jailbroken devices. :D Don't know why they are so against jailbroken iPhones.

no but i have a question, maybe you would know...I have iphone 3g and thinking about jailbreaking with comex's new jailbreak but does it enable multitasking and background wallpaper?

you can edit it yourself like i did google it

Skype checks to make sure that it is an original OS. The first time I logged in after jailbreaking, it gave me a warning saying that Skype is only compatible unedited versions.

So yes, it is because of Skype, not the jailbreak itself.

I don't have a problem with skype but safari. Before when I exit and re-enter whatever page I was on would be there. Now it refreshes the page evrerytime. Is that the glitch everyone is also experiencing?

Bingo.

why?
the only thing they do is detect if you're on a jailbroken iphone to let you know that if you have any issues, it's your fault not theirs. they haven't taken any active measures to mess with the jailbreak.

This issue with Skype looks more like a plain crash rather than the app disabling backgrounding.

This is not limited to skype. I have noticed Alot (most) of my apps completely reloading, including Safari which never did this before. I dont even use skype and I have this issue so everyone saying it's a skype only problem is full of crap.

Interesting - the only one crashing for me is Skype. No other I'll-effects from the JB.

Skype for me is working fine , no need to install backgrounder. Any suggestios to test other multitasking apps to see if they are working?

When you say Skype is working fine, are you 100% certain that backgrounding is working. Can you exit to home screen in the middle of a call? Does Skype keep you logged in when you leave the app? If these features really are working normally, then your config / jailbreak sequence could be significant for the rest of us.

I can confirm that as I was having a skype call I pressed the home button and the call was still active, open up the skype app again, call was still active double tap home and went to messages and the call was still ok then I terminated the call, pressed home button and went to home screen and I instructed my skype friend to type a message through skype and I got this message as a notification

Very interesting. Did you install skype before or after the jailbreak? What other jailbroken apps do you have installed?

Thx.

Trust me. You do not want multitasking on a 3g. It will slow the phone down a lot. Too slow for me, so I got rid of it.

I installed it before jb and the only jb app I have is openshh(tried to install mobile terminal but does not support yey ios4)

Alright. I have openssh, sbsettings, and mywi. In addition to the skype backgrounding problem, I am also seeing an issue where strange icons (normally hidden) will appear on the home screen requiring a respring. My hunch is that this may all be related to sbsettings.

yep but when you hit the home button while on a call, the red bar on top appears, disappears, it's sort of flashing for a while, meaning it's not working 100% fine. and when you're not on a call and hit the home button, try to get your friend to call you 30 seconds later: it won't work...

it has nothing to do with sbsettings or mobilesubstrate.

To try: I made a fresh install of os4 on my iphone, installed Skype, then jailbroke my iphone. The only jailbroken app was cydia. Then tried skype and its backgrounding features didn't work either.

Interesting. Thanks for saving me some time...
