This is my setup...

Edit: Just read your post above and yeah that's how i set it up ;)

At least we know this is running natively...

I still think it was running natively the way I had it before - if it wasn't I don't think we'd get the red bar at the top, and there'd be the Backgrounder wheel on the icon.

Still, at least it works.

I tried the backgrounder method but same result:

- When hitting the home button while on a call, the red bar appears, disappears, appears, disappears, then stays on, and the call keeps working.

- While on idle, quitting to hte home screen apparently keeps skype running (i see the blue wheel from background letting me know it's running in native background mode) but I cannot receive calls or messages, then after a few seconds skype on my mac notifies I went offline..

In my case (and Oliver's), you don't actually USE the backgrounder... The reason why I set it up as Native is to make sure Backgrounder is not handling the... well backgrounding API.

If you noticed on my screenshot above, I also UNBOUND any activator key that may activate Backgrounding. The default to activate Backgrounder is to do Short Hold on home button but I have unbound that action

So technically, the Backgrounder app is just installed and sitting there not doing anything... But somehow it "fixes" the Skype problem by being there

heres how i got it working

Skype was not working in the background...

i installed backgrounder svn.r504-1

then set it up like the cydia wiki status note said:
suggest putting the global setting to Backgrounder and turn off Enable at Launch. This will allow iOS4 apps to run their native backgrounding by default and then use a activator setting to enable backgrounder backgrounding

skype will native work in the background, as will other apps, and i can still have the option of forcing a app to run in the background by my Activator key stroke

I know what you mean and I'm not using backgrounder in any way to background the app.

doesn't work either.
as soon as I hit the home button, i become unreachable through skype (messages won't arrive and calls will go to skype voicemail)

blue means the app is using native backgrounding, black means it's using backgrounder's method.

Oh right I did not enable the badges. My bad... Sorry I'm not sure what's your problem :( Seems like the other method from Cydia wiki didn't work for you either :(

Right, while we're on the subject of Backgrounder....

I play a lot of Words with Friends (plug - competition to be set up here http://www.the-iblog.com/2010/07/13/words-with-friends-tournament-interest-gauge/ ) and noticed that my badge count wasn't going down after I had made my move.

It turns out that it was something to do with backgrounder. Now, WWF hasn't been updated for iOS4's multitasking yet, so I had to go into Backgrounder's settings, add WWF as an exception, and tell it to do no multitasking of any sort. Hey presto, my badges are updating again.

Interesting, no?

everyone is ignoring the bigger problem here: something in the JB is screwing with the native multitasking/suspended state/ fast app switching system. Apps that used to suspend are now reloading for me very frequently. Including NATIVE apps like Safari.

this goes much deeper than skype

Do you have an example of what you did? Because I opened a website, double tap, go to phone, and back to browser, it's still on the same spot

its random, and doesnt happen everytime, but trust me, apps that should be, and always before, suspended are reloading. i have since restored to stock FW and am waiting for a polished release.

Reason I asked is that I never left any browser page open. I like to keep it clean and close all the tabs before I quit the app that's why I probably never experience it.

The only app that's even affected by the actual JB for me is Skype. Everything else acts as normal.

Yeah, WunderRadio (superb app!) and Pandora works fine

i am referring more to apps that suspend, not run in the background. pay attention to your phone and Ill bet you notice what i am talking about. craigspro, for example always suspended just perfectly, now it reloads the whole app almost everytime.

Agreed - WunderRadio was actually the very first app I purchased from the iTMS and still one of my most used (and loved) applications.

Really love the ability to listen to stations in Taiwan for my Chinese music fix and UK radio is IMHO has better song choices than a lot of local radio here too. :p

This is frustrating isn't it. After lots of messing around and process of elimination I can confirm it is in fact the jailbreak breaking multitasking. It doesn't seem to happen to everyone for some reason and it work's at first on a freshly jailbroken phone for me. But eventually multitasking stops working. This is noticeable on stock Apple apps. I close the settings app after navigating a few menus in and when I reopen it it's back at the top level. Clearly something is going wrong and apps aren't being suspended to RAM.

ashikase pushed out an update for Backgrounder to address Skype and that worked for a while for me. But there seems to be a bug with the 'backgrounder' method and I've sent him a message

exactly what i have been trying to say but most seem to dismiss it. it is a bummer that this initial jb has messed up so many stock iOS4 features. hopefully it can be refined.

Agreed. It works with both apple apps (settings, mail, etc...) and purchased apps. I can replicate the problem with textplus for example...

Deleting MobileSubstrate seems to have fixed the problem, although this negates the whole point of jailbreaking for me...
