Apple obviously knows the contact and location info of owners using these tags for nefarious purposes. I wonder how hard it is for police to get this information from Apple when presented with a search warrant.

Can't the AirTag be used to track down who the owner / tracker was? Seems like knowing who was tracking that AirTag, from what device and at what location could pin point the lawbreaking delinquents.

Apple needs to release an Android app for AirTags tracking so people with Android phones can detect if they're being stalked.

I'm seeing a lot of videos on TikTok of people finding AirTags on their car.

That would be a marketing nightmare "We are making an app available to you because our product has been used to stalk and track people"

This should clear it up... ?

I'm familiar with the case. I just think it's nuts to assume that this guy is lying. What about all of the other reports of the same thing happening? They must all be liars too. Everything's fake! There's NO WAY that someone is using an Apple product for evil, right?

If you are familiar with TikTok, you should be immediately suspicious anytime you start seeing a lot of videos of the same thing...because that's what TikTok does. If it gets attention, everyone wants to do it. Including "finding" an airtag on their own car...

You've been able to buy cheap GPS trackers online for years. And the same can be done with the Tile for years. It's only because anything with Apple in it makes headlines and headlines bring web traffic and revenue, that they're highlighting these cases. Unless they want to admit they're completely ignorant to the fact such tech has been easily accessible for tracking folks for years and they've never picked up on such.

He should just buy an EV.

Those are rarely stolen because you never know how much charge it has left.
And it takes more time to charge and you'll very likely leave a data-trail behind because the chargers note your vehicle ID.

Don't EVs give you a range of miles you have left? So it's no different than a gasoline or diesel vehicle in that regard. And I'm sure the percentage of EVs compared to gasoline or diesel vehicles is very low in comparison, which would explain why less EVs are stolen than other vhicles.

Ouch! This is so bad. Getting tracked by an unknown AirTag is the worst feeling ever.
For all it’s good AirTags are now a way to track unintended victims. Find your Apple product was great, but a little unnoticeable device is like right out of a spy novel. We taken this UWB technology a bit too far it seems, almost need to sell portable RF gear for making sure your not being tracked as you travel.

“Today's UWB can accurately pinpoint other devices, tell you if it's in motion, and lead you to it. UWB can, in theory, pinpoint things down to the centimeter. Walls and other obstacles are not much of an issue.”

It's a double-edged sword, for sure as Tesla (and other charger-operators, too) will likely provide interfaces for law-enforcement to track any car through HPC usage - because they identify to the charging-network.
And something like a Tesla will whoop the "muscle cars" butt without break a sweat.

So now android users need to download an apple app to prevent being tracked? interesting times indeed... If thieves and criminals ever switch to galaxy smart tags, Samsung will have to make an iphone app that does the same thing.

If someone desires your car, they will try and steal it whatever.
A tracker is not required, they can just follow you home.

Place your own tracker somewhere hidden in your car, and send law enforcement (or the equalizer) on the trail.
The car example is only the tip of the iceberg, you could hide a AirTag on almost anything. Want to track your spouse, kids, neighbors, employees seems like a lot is possible. Soon you won’t know who following who. :D

Lol yeah nobody should be able to find their lost things because some minute number of people may or may not abuse the technology.

Also, this has nothing whatsoever to do with UWB. If thieves are actually using AirTags like this—and that's a big "if"—they're only using their BT capabilities.

Here you go.
Except it’s kind of useless because it doesn’t run in the background. You have to somehow suspect you’re being tracked and then run a scan manually, or just remember to regularly scan on your own at some set interval. In the former case, by then it could very well be too late.

The Find My network uses Bluetooth, not UWB, for offline finding including AirTags and other Find My devices that have been separated from their owner, which covers the case of AirTags used for illicit tracking of others.
