I'm in total agreement with this post. My macbook is a refurb, it was also the latest model at the time, so I got the latest model and about 13% off the price, and it's absolutely perfect. Cosmetically and everything. I doubt I'll ever buy a brand new one again.

Glad to hear of your good experience on the refurb, congrat's and please let your son get some time in.

Refurbished is definitely the way to go. I just convinced my parents to upgrade their office PC to the exact same iMac because it was so dang cheap.

I do feel bad for those stuck trying to sell their old G4s. You gotta sell fast once you see the new technology.

Refurbished computers come from different sources. A refurbished Mac could just be an old model that Apple didn't manage to sell (every time some new model comes out, Apple will do their post to sell off the previous model, but anything they can't sell will become refurbished). It could be a completely unopened box that someone bought, then changed their mind. Or Dad bought his son a MacBook for his birthday without asking Mum who also bought a MacBook - one will end up being sold as refurbished. So that kind of Mac would actually be brand new.

There will also be models that were sold, broke down in the first week, have been returned and fixed. As with everything in life things can go wrong. There have been people who got refurbished Macs that didn't work or were not in an acceptable state, but that can happen with a brand new Mac as well, and that is what warranty is for.

Any refurbished Mac must be one hundred percent working and complete, and it must be one hundred percent clean. The box is not original, and I think there could be cosmetic damage. On the other hand, you could get more than you paid for, like you could get more RAM or a bigger harddisk for free, if a custom-built Mac had been returned.

NOT true. This is how it works...
1. Models Apple didn't manage to sell go on CLEARANCE.
2. Completly UNOPENED boxes someone bought and returned are sold againg normally.
3. OPEN boxes returned without any damage are sold on Apple Stores as REFRESHED. (Same with iPods and other Apple accesories returned opened and in working conditions.)
4. Last but not least, damage equipment becomes REFURBISHED equipment.

So we basically have 3 things, CLEARANCE, REFRESHED (SOLD AT APPLE STORES ONLY), and REFURBISHED (SOLD AT APPLE ONLINE ONLY)

But you're right! "Any refurbished Mac must be one hundred percent working and complete, and it must be one hundred percent clean." Plus it gets Apple's warranty as if it was any other new product.

On a side note, custom-built Macs cannot be returned unless it is a DOA, then it becomes REFURBISHED.

Just wanted to give my .02¢ and yes, I work at Apple.

I just got my 2.2ghz 15" macbook pro on Sat early in the AM refurbished when they were in stock. I was going to get the edu discount one at $1799, but went with the refurb when it was available. Another perk: I bought from a biz agent online (and was able to get a $60 rebate on my purchase by going through their store: http://otechs.com/rebate - the person who runs this site is techound1 who's an active member of this forum).

So refurbs are a good chance to lock in extra discounts too.

Typing my first post from my beautiful and clean refurb'd MB that I got from the Apple store for under $900. I had 2 MB of Crucial RAM sent at the same time, installed it Friday night, and haven't missed a beat since. Ordered at 10:00 AM EST last Monday and had the MB by 5:00 EST the next day.
:D

With the screen issues on the alu. iMacs, which I saw for myself on a 2.8Mhz iMac running Leopard in an Apple Store on the 26th (if it was absent I would have bought one then and there), I today ordered a 24" 2.16Ghz white iMac refurb from the Apple store. So I guess I'm in for a dime, in for a dollar.

Refurbs Rock

I have bought three Apple refurbs, an iMac 2.16, a iBook 12" and a macbook. All three are just plain perfect. Incidently, about a month ago I ordered one of the iMac 17"'s for $850. Shipping was estimated at 10 days to 2 weeks. That period came and went and I got an email from Apple stating that they could not fulfill the order for the iMac 17", so they sent me a new (white) 20" iMac for the same price. Me happy!
