I bought my Apple watch 6 in the Summer of 2021. Today the screen on my Apple Watch 6 went blank. I tried to restart it by pressing the two buttons but nothing happened. The Apple logo is suppose to pop up…but instead I got a weird digital band across a black screen. Now it’s just black. I know the Apple watch 6 series had an issue where screens went black and Apple would repair or replace them for free… but when I typed the serial number in on the Apple site, it said my watch wasn’t eligible for that repair. Other than this, I’ve had no issues with this watch. I use it all the time to track my bike rides & really love it. But this morning when I took it off the charger, it was fully charged, and then a few minutes later, the screen just went dead. No response.

Has anyone else had this happen to them? What was it? And did Apple repair it? Thanks.

If it has AppleCare give them a call and they should be able to sort it out. Otherwise it’s almost certainly not worth repairing. I would wait a few weeks and see what Santa-Tim unveils.

That would also give the battery time to discharge in case it’s a software thing. That seems amazingly unlikely though.

No Apple care. Bummer. But it seems like a defect to me. Apple should cover it regardless. The watch is in pristine condition otherwise. The screen isn’t cracked or damaged in any way. I really took care of it. This was my first Apple watch and I really enjoyed it. Is this normal for Apple Watches to just die after 2 years? I’d hate to spend another $400 on an Apple watch for the same thing to happen 2 years down the road.

This is why I encourage people to get AppleCare. This is especially important if you want to keep your Apple device for an extended period of time. Without AppleCare, there is a one-year warranty. After that you’re on your own unless someone at the Apple store takes pity on you.

No it’s not normal for an Apple Watch to fail in two years nor is it normal for one to last 20 years. If there are 100,000 Apple watches out there, some will die in six months while others might last a decade or more. That’s just how things work.

What will eventually fail is the battery. If you want to keep your Apple Watch for an extended period of time, AppleCare pays for itself with that one battery replacement for free. My Apple Watch Series 4 was starting to have less than all day battery life and the Apple Store fixed that for me.

It happens. Electronics fail now and then. Apple does offer an extended warranty for this exact situation.

My S7 couldn’t turn on after one of my swimming sessions last month. Fearing it was water damage, I was convinced Apple wouldn’t do anything for me. Brought it to the Genius Bar and I’ve got a one-to-one replacement. Head down and speak to the staff there and explain your situation to them. Good luck!

Yeah, I’ll be taking my Apple Watch into an Apple Store this week. Just wanted to see if anyone else had this happen to their Apple Watch 6. Will post what they say at the Apple Store later…

Sorry to hear about your loss. For what it’s worth, I bought the Series 4 on release day and it’s still going strong.

Take it to Apple and see what they say. My wife had a Series 2 that failed at nearly 3 years old and Apple said if she had bought it from them, they would have replaced it for free. She hadn't unfortunately. It all depends on who you speak to I suppose, but you'd expect an AW to last longer than 2 years.
