^ It makes perfect sense if your goal is to restrict users from replacing their batteries through any means but Apple, which is precisely what Apple's goal is. They didn't make the battery non-replaceable for your convenience, but for theirs. It's just an extension of other proprietary accessories in the lineup (e.g., the $100 AC adapters, the $20 mini-DVI to DVI adapter, etc).

It's a computer though. A lot of people use the MacBook Pro as their main computer, and it's totally absurd to have to possibly lose your computer for a while just because of a battery. Apple's been producing notebooks with removeable batteries for some two decades now, and I can't really think of any other notebook that has a non-replaceable battery. So for me, at least, I find it totally nonsensical, ridiculous, and the total opposite of 'user friendly'.

Please don't be mean, This is a hard working guy. My mom and dad are hard working as well (Aren't we all?) So this was a BIG purchase for us.

Bottom Line: We got a 2GHz Aluminum MacBook 2 weeks before the new one came out (Today) and Best Best only has a 14 day return policy on laptops..
(We bought it in the store, and it was a surprise)

He is depressed that our parents had to pay extra for a lower end model. Can you blame him? We had no idea...

Can you please help my brother come to terms with this? He is happy with his MacBook, but he wants the illuminated keyboard and stuff and HE REALLY feels bad that they paid more..
:( Help...Please..

Please no comments that only make him sadder.. He is struggling a lot right now..

Your brother has no reason to be sad. His MB is still a fast and beautiful machine, and unlike the new ones, it has a user-replaceable battery, which is a far more valuable feature than an illuminated keyboard or a new slot. In a few years he'll be thankful he didn't get the new ones.

I bought mine a month ago, and I have to say I was a little disappointed about the updates so soon, but I felt just that much better when it was suggested they are collectors editions now, haha. Brilliant way to alleviate that dammit feeling. I wouldn't have minded the "Pro" appended to the name - but that's absolutely nothing. What I think I would like the most about the new one is actually just the SD card reader, but I can get a USB one anyway. Oh well, back to playing on my Collectors Edition :p

Thats why I originally came up with it! Alleviate the situation!
People here try to bash it but its just for fun! Its funny something like that upsets people! haha!

haha yeah... the thing i want the least is the SD card reader... i kinda just want the better screen - maybe the battery can be fit into the MacBook.. after all it's the same size.. but i guess we'll have to wait for someone to actually try that.

upgrade in Processor speed would be nice too.

That's one of the things that's turning me off the thought of buying a new macbook (now MBP) when the time comes... I really value the removable battery, especially because taking along spares is nice if you really want a whole day worth of power out of it when you're on the road. Seeing that I neither need the illuminated keyboard, I'm more than happy with my current screen, and I don't need firewire or an SD card slot (have a USB card reader for when I need it, which is like once a year), I hope the 13 inch macbook pro will have some other features in future revisions to make it an interesting purchase for me in the future.

As the white plastic bottom of the range MacBook was faster than the 2.0 unibody when you bought it, it should have been fairly clear that the unibodies were going to be upgraded very soon.

Sorry for your brother, but in the future be sure to check in here. We could have assured you that a new MacBook UB was coming with a fairly good bump.

To be honest I feel your brothers pain.

In my view the newer macbook 'pros' are better than the base model uMB.

and if I had just bought one a few weeks ago I'd be pissed too.

and that's the TRUTH. Tell your brother to suck it up...s**t happens.

The 13-inchers never had any form of ExpressCard.

If you'd read the post he was replying to, you'd realize that the poster has a Collector's Edition 15" MacBook Pro, which does have the ExpressCard slot :)

Ah, ok. I thought he was replying to the OP.

Hey man, you should be happy that you are at least get to use the best operating system in the world. I had to spend my own money to buy my white macbook. That cost me my live savings of 1000 dollars. I'm only 17, but there are other things that I could have spent that on ( a car, an hdtv, a ps3, or an apple tv). Just be happy that you get to use the best from the start, I had to use a windows machine that crashed 4 times a day. Think of all the other kids at school that always complain about computer problems with their xp or vista machine. Then remind yourself that you won't have half those problems and smile :D.

Somebody else here said that your brother has a specimen from the one and only generation of UMBs, which I totally agree on. Besides, it's still one of the best MBs ever produced. No need for buyer's remorse - it's far better to have a great MB than a mediocre MBP.

Don't you think so, too?

Tell'em that's how technology works.

The fact that he's happy with the computer is all that matters. Consider that $100 the "collector's edition" fee as per my sig now, lol....

collectors edition? lol. wow, i want one but thier not for sale anymore. how much?????

At the original poster...sorry for you loss. that sucks. i know what it feels like to be poor and to have this happen is a real bummer. but that's just the world of tech. what you should of done is spend 2 weeks of surfing the forums and doing research and you would of known of the possibility of the revamping.

1. You can (and should) get applecare for macbook price, not increased macbook pro price for essentially the same machine.

2. Unsure about the battery issue. Both approaches (removable and newer battery) have pros and cons. Apple had better damned well continue to produce and make available replacement batteries for the unibody 1st gen macbook lineup.

3. Maybe the OP was listening to the long term posters who were emphatically stating on this forum that there was no way that apple would or could introduce new models at WWDC. (I'm not naming names, but they know who they are...).

4. Technology eventually punks us all. Your brother can use his MB until it no longer serves his purposes, then he can buy a core 9 octo or whatever new chip intel will be providing at that time for the same money or less. It's not like the PPC days when apple would would release a new revision of the powerbook with a .13 ghz processor bump and little else...there was a lot less incentive for people to run out and buy a new system every year then.

I've been hearing rumors that you can call Apple support and they will take back your computer for a refund, or you can replace your current MacBook Uni with the update version and be refunded the price difference. I read this on the Apple.com forums, I'm not sure how accurate that information is.

Tell him it's alright, and ask him if these updates didn't happen, would he still be dissatisfied with his computer? I'm sure he would still love his 2.0 macbook. Just ignore the updates and enjoy your computer until it falls apart. Trust me, I am strapped for money to, I'm a full time student and that's one of the reasons I come on this website so much, to try and keep an ear to the latest news and what might be coming out. This way I get the best bang for my buck. Just count it as a lesson learned and when you are ready to purchase again you will be better informed about immanent updates.

On a side note, glad to see you guys are hard working. Nothing honorable about easy money. In the mean time, best time to increase your salary is during a recession, register for some classes and increase your credentials. Best of luck! :D :p
