No no, you're mistaken.

I bought a Honda Civic Hatchback. They said that they don't have any in stock at the moment, so I'll need to come back soon.

Why won't they just let me upgrade to a Bugati Veyron? I mean, they're totally the same thing.

Hey, don't misrepresent the OP. He NEVER said they were the same thing.

Fair enough, I'll admit that was a bit much. But he did hope for a free $399 upgrade to a 3GS because he was told that he would have to wait on his replacement. That's a bit greedy, wouldn't you say?

Pelican - turn up your sarcasm meter. Iphone.Aggie was messin' :)

I only used Honda-Acura myself because they are the same manufacture so thought the anecdote was more accurate.

But yes.. I agree with you.

I agree...a bit greedy to expect or demand it. However not greedy to simply ask. I did not expect to be given a $399 iPhone for free. If you don't ask you'll never know. I simply said since there are no 3G in stock may I have a 3GS? She knew I was just fishing and didn't really expect it.

"Hey can I have that iPhone 3GS for free as a replacement?"

You're right. That TOTALLY doesn't sound greedy to me. Asking questions can never sound greedy, duhh. And simple. If you know the warranty, you don't need to ask, you already know what the answer will be.

She knew that you were yet another customer that the Genius Bar has to deal with that hopes for an extra something out of their warranty for no reason. Which is why she told you no.

This reminds me of the no good deed goes unpunished. Somewhere, someone goes to return a 3G and (not asking for anything) the genius comes back and says "hey - I can't replace your 3G - but I'm going to send you home with the 3GS"

The poster comes here (or has a friend who does) and brags about getting a new 3gs in exchange for a 3g at the Apple store.

Now you have a bunch of drooling 3G owners who are trying to find whatever they can wrong with their phones to go back to the Apple store and try to "sweetly" and "politely" ask for a free upgrade.

Not saying at all that's what the OP did or intended!!

Point is - sometimes you're in the right spot and the right time and you get blessed with good fortune. It's not a rule. One isn't entitled. It's a random act of kindness.

But - if more and more people expect such occurances and flood the stores seeking them, they will, indeed, stop.

It's not just exchanges. This behavior has been illustrated on this board with calls to ATT about shipping their phones, getting MMS to work around, adding FAN codes that one isn't entitled to, etc.

Exactly. If something's legitimately wrong with your iPhone, you have all the right in the world to expect a replacement. A replacement, NOT an upgrade.

However, if the Genius that is helping you at the time decides to throw you a bone and benefit you extra in any way, good for you. Don't "kindly ask a question" about getting some extra benefit because everyone knows that just means "begging nicely for something free."

And american muscle cars ftw. Vroom vroom.

it did come in a little white box, that's why I asked the Genius if it was a refurbed unit... he said, "no, its brand new but just in a smaller box to not waste boxing materials". I didn't really buy that story but he assurred me it was new, not refurbed. He could have been wrong, but he's the "Genius" that knows his store's stock better than I do...

Those are refurbs. Again, not a big deal. It's all new housing, but the device itself most likely has been reparied or reconditioned. If it is a 3G then it for sure is a refurb, a 3GS white box still may be new since the 3GS is still very new.

I don't really care either way... it's likely the genius was misinformed... no biggie...
