My hopes for the iPhone 5...

I will also be buying an iPhone 5 to replace my iPhone 4.

My simple requests are for it to work as well as every other iPhone has done, and to have improved battery life. That is all.

The ONLY thing I want for the new iPhone is for it to be called the "iPhone 5"! None of that "New iPad" bull-excrement. That's the only thing that really matters. If its called the "New iPhone", how will others know that I have a superior phone than they do? That would be unacceptable. If Apple pulls this "New" nonsense on the iPhone, that will be the day I switch to Android.

you'd really switch because of a name? That is pretty stupid....
Who cares what its called? You think that they will keep up the numbers game? Yea i have the iPhone 15s. Yea not going to happen...
People will know you have the new iPhone because it will look different not because of the stupid name...

If they come out with a crappy 3.5" AGAIN and a tweaked-only OS, then the honeymoon is definitely going to be over, and the wolves (press) will smell blood.

Here's a quote from you, January 2011.

(If Apple doesn't increase the screen size) Apple is going to have to do something or the iPhone will go the way of the BlackBerry: become the staunch old uncool phone that less and less people use while technology makes leaps and bounds in newer phones.

Apple went against your advice and released a 4S with the same form factor. But contrary to your opinion, more than a year later from your prediction iPhone is growing fast and no sign of going BlackBerry (yet). In fact they are doing better than ever. (But don't let that stop you from making the same prediction every year, many analysts have been predicting this is the year the Apple bubble bursts for the past 10 years ;) )

At this point iOS and iDevices have their own momentum. For Apple the most important thing is actually to produce enough devices when the new product release happens. If Apple changed the design and increased the display size, they would've sold less iPhones, not more simply because they wouldn't be able to make as many. Making a new design every year probably doesn't give Apple enough time to work out the production yield in time.

That does not mean Apple won't increase the screen size in the next device though. Rumors point that Apple is going to release the next iPhone with a larger display, somewhere around 4" diagonal. However it looks like Apple will try to keep the physical size somewhat similar to the current iPhone with smaller bezel and different aspect ratio.

Personally I'd happy with a thin bezel 3.84" display but curious to see how Apple will address the problem of handling different ratio from the previous iPhones.

Another thing of interest is Apple's purported iPad Mini. Perhaps Apple sees that a 7.85" tablet will do well enough to quell some of the demand for the very large phones?

Sorry but Apple is going to go with the "new" concept. Technically it is just called the iPad but we put new to say that it is the new one. Honestly we I think about it I didn't even say which iPhone I had when the iPhone 4 was new. I never did say "I have the iPhone 4." I and just about everyone I knew would say "yea, I have the new iPhone." It makes a lot more sense.

Think about it, it is not called the iMac 10. It is not called the MacBook Pro 10 or w/e. It is just called the iMac or MacBook Pro. We the community just end up calling it the "20xx" iMac or MacBook Pro to tell which one we have. You will do the same thing. "I have the new iPhone." It immediately tells everyone that you have the latest iPhone. If you just said "I had the iPhone 5" that says nothing. What if the people your talking too don't know which is the latest iPhone?

4 - 4.6 inch 1440x960 IPS display (same transition as from 480x320>960x640)
Umm...how is that a logical transition? You switched the vertical pixels to horizontal. If Apple continues with their practice of doubling the screen resolution they would go from 960X640 to 1920X1280 pixels, not 1440X960.

His reasoning is that if you triple 480x320, you get 1440x960 which actually does work because the multiplier is integer.

However if you match the iPhone 4 DPI with that resolution you get a 5.2" phone. That resolution is just too high if you go 4-4.6 inch and I doubt Apple will release a 5"+ phone.

Gotcha. Sorry, I was only hung up on doubling the screen resolution between consecutive generations.

I'm holding out for the iPhone 8...looks like Apple might have one ready by 2017 if all goes well. That's given the 2-year=per-revision cycle we're currently on. Maybe by then we will have *Holographic Siri* and 256-day battery life.

Yeah, I know! I'm just tr-playing! I just hate how in every single website that has iPhone rumors, you always hear "iPhone 5 this... iPhone 5 that...". Its like everyone holds that freaking name on a pedestal. Its like its some god-phone that everyone is waiting for that will never arrive. It sets every one up to have ridiculous expectations when in reality the new iPhone will most likely be a decent to slight upgrade over the iPhone 4S and nothing more. Why? Because Apple has to set you up to upgrade on 2013; They're a business! I love what Apple did with the new iPad's name and I really hope they do the same for the iPhone.

As has been mentioned, 1440x960 is a multiple of 480x320 which are the dimensions iPhone apps are coded for. All developers need to do is give higher resolution content.

Why is it too high? It won't make anything smaller, just as 480x320>960x640 didn't, it'll just add more detail. Everything will actually become larger as the screen is getting bigger.

Fifth generation iPhone was already released.

If people wanted to start another one of these threads. Moderators should immediately change the title to sixth generation iPhone titles.
This may get me banned, but you are an idiot.

You got me there :p. I underestimated Apple's fans willingness to buy en mass anything Apple puts out, no matter how behind the times it is.

The "Apple fans will buy anything Apple" argument sounds ludicrous when you consider Apple has sold 35+ million iPhones in each of past two quarters.

When less than a few million phones are sold in a quarter, such argument sounds plausible albeit inane, but when more than 70 million devices have been sold the past 8 months, that's just trolling.

Everyone always says bigger screen. Why? I am 6'2" with large hands and I think the 3.5 is perfect unless they can keep the current body size the same and increase to 4". I just recently tried out an HTC One X. It is the best Android phone available, but it is too dang awkward to hold and text. This is the problem with all of the latest and greatest androids. They are simply too big. Any person is comfortable with the iPhone will regret a bigger screen.

Apple did not set us up to upgrade in 2013.... A lot of people that bought iPhone 4's didn't upgrade to the 4s. I was disappointed by that launch. I'd say more people are going to upgrade to the new phone than the 4s.

The 4S is hardly behind the times. It's a 3.5 inch smartphone and it's still rocking a better GPU than even the large smartphones on the market today.

I will disagree saying that Apple will set you up to upgrade in 2013. I would just about put money on it that this update will see a design change and more.

What I expect:
1: design change
2: tad bit bigger screen with Apple saying "we made it bigger without making it overall bigger."
3: Dual Core processor with Quad Core graphics
4: More RAM
5: Maybe doing something with the Camera(s). I have no need for a better front facing camera though. Plus lets face it, it's a camera phone, it's going to be hard to keep upgrading the camera like Apple has been doing.

Their is really nothing else the phone absolutely must have in my mind. The hardware has been just about top notch every year. It's the software that seems to lacking lately.

Disagree. My One X shows up tomorrow. My 4S will be going in the closet. Saw it in the store and thought the One X was absolutely brilliant, and made my iPhone look kind of bad. The larger size is a plus.

If you think the One X is too big, go look at most of the reviews for the Note. There are several that come from people that moved from the iPhone. Absolute raves.
