I believe no one has mentioned, Flipboard. Definitely the most used app on my iPad!!

I'd suggest Apple's free Podcasts app. Podcasts are free, and there are SO many amazing high quality podcasts out there. I like to listen to them while I'm driving to work, on a lunch break, doing laundry, etc. My favorite podcast is "Hardcore History" by Dan Carlin. It's not some dry history lecture, it's pretty fascinating stuff. For someone who has never heard his podcasts before, I'd suggest starting with Show 41 "Thor's Angels", covers the post Roman collapse period. There is also a lot of NPR podcasts that are pretty good.

Thank you! I love having quality material to listen to while I do other things!

I like listening to jazz when I'm at work- but I'm tempted to try some podcasts. I think it would distract me from work, though.

People have suggested DropBox, SkyDrive (or OneDrive, what ever Microsoft is calling it now), and other such apps, which are a good idea to have. If you're like me and have a slow internet connection, though, using those to transfer files between your computer and your iPad isn't always reasonable. iOS 8 with OS X 10.10 stands to change some of that, but there's an app you can use instead:

My #1 or #2 most-used application is Documents (free, by Readdle). Open it and your iPad appears as a drive on your computer, and you can just drag and drop files to it. Best of all, it accepts virtually any file format - PDFs, eBooks, videos, pictures and so on. It's the "file system" that people always complain is missing from the iPad.

If you'll be taking notes at all, Notability is excellent for note-taking. I use it with a cheap stylus off of eBay and have replaced paper with it.

If you use iTunes frequently, "Remote" (free, by Apple) is a nice way to control your iTunes from your iPad even if you're away from your computer.
