I am not having any of those issues... It feels snappy. I have Settings, Mail, Photos, Phone, Messages, Safari and Facebook in the multi-task dock and it seriously is running better than 3.1.2 did for me.

What have you installed from Cydia?

I've installed nothing from Cydia at all mate.

The animations when returning to the home screen are a little choppy, and while the animations on loading the multi-tasking menu are smooth, when I go into (for example) my phone app, it takes a good 5 seconds for a contact's details to come up when I tap their name.

you are correct. got the right one now..thanks

it bricked it...had to throw in DFU mode, restore to 3.1.3 ...then do this all over again...grrrr

That's what I'm about to do ... and keep it there.

If there was an easier way of going to 2.2 then I would (not to sound like TheSpaz).

your over 4.0?

Yup, this has been a worthwhile exercise, because now I'll shut my mouth once and for all about Apple "screwing" over 3G users.

It's usable, don't get me wrong ... but I'm a little to pedantic and notice little judders and drops in frame rate in animations.

Wow. That's interesting. Mine is not acting that way. Five seconds is a very long time. That would drive me crazy as well.

In fairness, it does the exact same thing on the native 4.0 for the 3G, so that's not because of enabling wallpaper or multi-tasking.

I've just put my 3G into DFU mode and have 3.1.3 restoring onto the phone as I type.

I think I'll give 4.0 a miss altogether.

That's interesting.

anyone try this on the 3GS? i might try it on there if someone says its works fine

You won't need to jailbreak the 3GS, because it has home-screen wallpaper and multi-tasking by default. iOS4 on the 3GS is spot on, but on the 3G it's a waste of time.

I'd rather Apple dropped support for the 3G along with the first generation iPhone ... honestly, I'm so happy to be back on 3.1.3.

If you use iTunes 9.2 beta and the appropriate iOS4 ipsw for the 3GS, you can update to iOS4 for the 3GS without having a developer account because the file is now a Gold Master.

how did you get back to 3.1.3 im going back to...4.0 offers nothing...now that i got it. and no apps work for it.

What features is jailbreaking giving you? I was under the impression that the 3G will have some of the features of iOS4, (i.e. menu wallpapers) but not the multi-tasking aspect.

Does it support menu wallpapers as standard?

iOS 4 does not support wall papers on 3G, probably so you buy a new one. It works just fine on my JB 3.1.2

Were you previously JB on 3.1.3? I assume you just installed 4.0GM and then used B4 w/ redsn0w like everyone else is doing?

If you keep'd your previous 3.1.3 JB during the process and made a custom .ipsw i'd really like to know. Haven't found that yet and guess waiting for dev team to come through. Don't want to up the baseband on mine.

Well, I went back to 3.1.3 and jailbroke it using redsn0w 0.9.4 and 3.1.2 firmware.

I know that Winterboard if used extensively can make the iPhone 3G slow down to the same level as iOS4 running all the home-screen features anyway.

So after a lot of work arounds I've finally got an iOS4 interface that runs as fast on the 3G as the 3G without any modifications.

The new "dock" is actually part of the wallpaper image, so that saves me having to theme that part of the OS, and the default dock is simply hidden.

There's no drop shadows, which is what slows the 3G to a crawl anyway, so the white text isn't quite as bold as on the real iOS4, but it's damn close.

(Above) Winterboard custom iOS4 look ... very, very close.

When the real iPhone 3G iOS4 is able to use mobile substrate apps like Winterboard, I'll update to iOS4 again and use the same procedure minus the wallpaper with dock/hide default dock, because obviously the new dock is already there!

A lot of messing about I know, but it's smooth and fast and looks like iOS4.

I can't go back to the basic black background after sampling the new look.

I'm now running jailbroken iOS4 on my 3G. Everything works well . . . accept for multitasking. I have no delay in loading apps and double-clicking the home button brings up the multitasking bar, but the apps don't multi-task as advertised.

ie - I tested tap tap revenge 2 and went to switch apps (so the game pasued), switched to messages, then went back to tap tap. However, when I went back to the game, instead of starting where I left off, the game loaded again like I had never pasued the game before.

Any one have this type of issue?

I don't believe for a second that your animation when the apps return onto the home screen after pressing the home button once to exit an app, is as smooth as it should be and is on 3.1.3 or even 4.0 for the 3G.

If you've read my posts since the one you quoted, which formed my opinion after extended use, you'd see that I found it unusable eventually.

Some people will put up with it, but the drop shadows DO hinder performance. The double tap of the home button and the accessing of the multi-tasking bar was smooth on my 3G, but I couldn't put up with the poor frame rate during the animations when the apps returned onto the home screen ... I'd have been willing to take a slight hit, but it was too noticeable for me.

The 3G's not meant to do it with all the shadows, etc ... that's why it's not in there to begin with. I accept that now.

I can agree on the fact it's not as smooth as it should be, but it's not so slow I can't handle it for another 2 weeks until I get the iPhone 4.

I'm not sure what the problem is with some of your phones, but my 3G runs flawlessly with wallpaper and multitasking enabled.

The only time it slows down even a bit is when I have the apps "shaking" to rearrange them. Other than that I'm full speed ahead and it works and looks awesome :)

I agree. In fact, mine runs BETTER with iOS4 than it did with 3.1.2. Noticeably better, in fact.

Only Apple's stock apps will truly multitask. Each app individually needs to be updated by the apps developer to take advantage of the new API's to multitask. If they apps developer doesn't update their app, the app will still show in the multitasking bar, but when it is reopened, it will just open from scratch again.

Just wondering has anyone managed to use the redsn0w beta on a PowerPC Mac or is it Intel Macs only?

Oh it runs ok ... and when the apps shake and I create folders it's nice and smooth.

The only problem is the animation for the apps coming back onto the home screen when you press the home button isn't as smooth as it is normally is.

However, I remedied this by going into the file system, into the Springboard.app file listing, and at the very bottom I removed the WallpaperGradient files (there's 8 of them), and now it's far smoother but still not as smooth as 3.1.3.

Everything else about the phone is faster than 3.1.3, but this animation being that little bit juddery annoys me ... because I am a pedantic sod. :D

Oh, for the record I liked Folder so much I restored to iOS4 and jailbroke it again. Ah well ... :p
