It would be nice if you could "block" apps from automatically entering multi-tasking mode.

While it's nice to try out the feature, it's a bit of a pain having to manually end apps when it begins slowing down.

I suppose that's why the 3GS, and even more so the iPhone 4, are only supposed to run this feature ... because having multiple apps open isn't an issue with the RAM on those devices.

Well, after reinstalling both iOS4 and doing the jailbreak I'm finding it perfectly usable, especially after removing the shadow gradients from behind the app icons (it remains behind the white text so it stands out).

I've recorded a short video on iMovie using iSight, so the quality is negligable, but it does show the 3G running with home-screen wallpaper and multi-tasking, so once it's uploaded I'll link the video here for 3G owners who are perhaps considering jailbreaking iOS4 GM, to see it in action for themselves.

Obviously it's no iPhone 4, or even 3GS, but for people who may find themselves stuck with a 3G for the time being (like myself) it's good to see it running ... even if it's a little slowly at times.

Ok, here's the video I mentioned, showing the iPhone 3G running iOS4 jailbroken and running all features (home-screen and multi-tasking).

I'll apologise for the quality, I done this briefly in iMovie and with the iSight camera on my iMac, but it gets the point across reasonably well.

I also apologise to the foreign members if my Glasgow accent is a little thick and makes things a little hard to understand, I did try to slow my speech down a little.

I followed those instructions and they worked fine.

I used SSH and Cyberduck instead of iPhone explorer.
I also added this string to the plist to enable battery percentage.

My 3G runs fine and looks great! :D

Glad you found the video useful mate.

Yeah, it does run pretty well. As I said, it's not blazingly fast ... but then it's not an iPhone 4! My problem first time around could have been that I updated to 4.0 instead of doing a clean install, so this time I restored to 4.0 and then jailbroke, which seems to have given better performance when using home-screen wallpaper (respring animation frame rate).

I disabled the gradient shadows behind the app icons because those did slow the 3G down (respring animations) even more, but you don't notice they're gone and the phone works great so far.

Mine is running great so far with the shadows still there. I considered removing them but then again I hardly use ANY apps! To me they're more a gimmick and eat up the RAM. Most things can be done through iPhone's Safari, e.g.: twitter, wikipedia, banking. The only apps I frequently use are ShakeIt to make my pictures into polaroids and Mill Colour to fix/enhance the pics I have. Oh, also SoundHound and last.fm are must-have apps in my book! Thank geebus I have AT&T's unlimited data plan! I won't give it up for anything! :D

Thanks for this thread! You are a really cool guy for sharing this! ;)

No problem, and thanks.

It's the one thing that "annoyed" me to an extent during the beta phase of iOS4 in that there was threads full of questions and no specific answers being given. I must have trawled upteen threads looking for a sniff of information about how iOS4 ran on the iPhone 3G.

So while there's lots of 3GS users and lots of people ready to ditch their iPhone 3G's to get the iPhone 4, there are still people out there who will for one reason or another, be sticking with their 3G's for now. It's those people, the ones who just want answers at a time when it's iOS4 and iPhone 4 overload, that I done the video, etc for.

If it helps or informs some 3G users, then all the better.

I'm now running jailbroken iOS4 on my 3G. Everything works well . . . accept for multitasking. I have no delay in loading apps and double-clicking the home button brings up the multitasking bar, but the apps don't multi-task as advertised.

ie - I tested tap tap revenge 2 and went to switch apps (so the game pasued), switched to messages, then went back to tap tap. However, when I went back to the game, instead of starting where I left off, the game loaded again like I had never pasued the game before.

Any one have this type of issue?

For right now, bc iOS4 isn't available officially to the public, none of the 3rd party apps are compatible with iOS4 and multitasking. the apps have to be specifically written to take advantage of certain multitasking features. once iOS4 goes live to everyone via iTunes, then the apps will be updated.

Getting rid of the icon shadow just for the icon and not the text def. speeds up the "respring" animation!

Thats interesting. I was playing with a 3GS running iOS4 today and it looked no quicker or smoother than that. I'm in two minds whether or not to jailbreak my iPhone 3G now its up on 4.0. When it was jailbroken on 3.0.1 and 3.1.2 it ran slow as ****. I mean, really slow. 3 seconds to load Messages app, 4 seconds to load Settings. Now I've got it on 4.0 its lightning quick.

You mentioned in the video that its fairly advanced to enable multitasking and such, to what degree is it advanced? I know how to Jailbreak the phone but I cant find any guides on enabling multitasking

How do I disable Gradient Shadows?

I have the iPhone 3G Jailbroken with iOS4 GM. The stutter on returning to the springboard is kind of annoying when the Home Screen Wallpaper is enabled.

Thanks!

guys i just like the home screen wallpaper and the dock, how do i install the dock through winterboard?

also if i upgrade to OS4 will the baseband upgrade too? i cant have that coz im on 3.1.3 and unlocked through fuzzyband. i dont want to go through OS4 and have its baseband upgraded and make it unlockable

The new dock is part of iOS4 regardless of it running on the 3G or 3GS. You won't need to jailbreak or use Winterboard to get the new dock.

Check my description mate, there's a link to Pixelated Geek's website with full details on how to jailbreak iOS4 on the 3G and links to all the files required to do it, including the iPhone Reader and Text Wrangler files to enable you to get into the root folder of the OS and edit the plist files as required.

OMG, they need to release an unlock. Hopefully it doesn't take too long after the iOS 4.0 is officially released, even though the GM was released I was hoping to see an unlock by now :p.

You go to /System/library/coreservices/springboard.app and delete the 8 wallpapergradient files. Make sure you back them up first though.

Everything is running much faster after deleting the gradient shadows. Thank you OP!
