How are everyone's power/standby buttons? Mine is a lot mushier than my original iPhone and it kind of irks me.

Also, has anyone else been out in the sun with their 3GS? I was outside and noticed my home button doesn't match the color of the surrounding black. It almost looks slightly navy-ish. Anyone else?

Not impressed with the build quality of these things, makes me miss using my 1G.

Yeah. Both my sleep/wake button and my home button are pretty mushy. Plus my volume rocker is pretty much flush with the casing so it takes a great deal of effort to get it to register my pushes. Apple is definitely letting their quality slip on these. I'm a little disappointed but I'm just going to deal with it for now because I already applied my BSE shield and anti-glare screen protector.

my black iphone looks almost purple in direct sunlight. not that i care, i use a case. My home buttons clicks, but my friend's just "goes in"

The rattle in my iPhone is so minor, that I don't think it's worth it to have it replaced. I'd rather have this be my only issue than to get a new iPhone replacement and potentially have light leaks, dead pixels, connection issues, etc.

both phones A OK

My phone and my wifes both came out great, I recommend some type of ruber case because while I was at home with mine i was doing somehting and it slipped, luckily on a rug so today I went back to best buy and got a skin that will still allow me to use a holster.

I finally lucked out... My 3GS has a smooth, even bezel from all sides, the home button has a nice positive click without being loose, the sleep/wake is pretty tight, and no odd sounds. (All this after having to exchange my first gen twice for multiple problems) I really think its just chance that some of these things come off the line bad. When you have this many products being produced for a bunch of neurotic customers like us, problems are bound to be discovered. I handed my bad first gens to my wife, and she couldn't tell anything was wrong, lol. I know some of these issues are legitimate problems, but I don't think we can say the build quality of the 3GS in general is poor. For every 1 bad phone, there may be 10000 that are perfect. Who knows? After all, how many threads do we see pop up that say "My 3GS is Perfect!"? Most ppl keep quiet if everything is good to go. I would clearly exchange your phone if I were you, because if you notice the problems, they will nag you until you are totally unhappy with it.

Mushy is a perfect description for my home button. That combined with every now and then my phone saying "No SIM", and I am exchanging it tomorrow morning at the Apple Store.

The vibration is weaker than the 3G, this has been reported by many.

The rattle noise is normal. It's the accelerometer.

The rattle is actually the 'loose' vibrate switch. If you put your finger on it and shake the phone you won't hear the rattle.

The rattle is not the loose vibrator switch. I've tried butting my finger on the vibrator witch and the volume buttons and it still makes the sound it seems to be coming from the camera.

I went to the apple store today and got my 3GS replaced, but the replacement phone fixed somethings like my super weak vibration but now I have two new problems. The metal ring around the camera is sticking out and the bezel is sticking out even more now. I don't know what to do now the genius at the apple store said he couldn't replace it again and said if i really didn't like it i could call the 1800 apple phone number and complain. He sounded really annoyed.

Yeah I have all those problems. But I don't care enough to go in to get it replaced.

You people complain too much.

I too am disappointed with the build quality of my 3Gs. I had both the original and 3G and never had a problem or had to do an exchange. The 3Gs has sharp edges where the bezel doesn't fit the plastic back evenly. It feel bad in my hand. For the money I paid (32GB) this should be better. I wonder if Best Buy will do an exchange?

Isn't the accelerometer digital? I don't believe there are any internal moving parts on the phone.

Mine also rattles and it is most definitely coming from the camera area. I have held the various buttons while setting it down and it still rattles. That isn't too big of a deal to me. The slightly more annoying part is the lack of a positive click when pressing the home button. My bezel is decent, only slightly off on the right side.

Overall I'm not displeased with the build quality, but neither am I blown away.

my glass and bezel don't match. the bezel is high on the spot you drag to when unlocking and the glass is high on the top left corner. I had the first gen and it felt great in your hand. This thing has sharp edges around the bezel to plastic area and the 3 cuts at the bottom are also sharp. Love the phone but it has the build quality of a Dodge Durango.

actually, the rattle is the autofocus in the camera. i read this the other day and didnt think it could be possible, but try taking a photo and tap to focus while shaking your phone. the rattle stops when the camera is focusing....pretty wild. guess ill get used to it, although i HATE when my electronics rattle or make noises that they aren't supposed to. oh well.

Yep, there is another thread somewhere about the rattle and it seems that the posters have narrowed it down (very convincingly) to the autofocus mechanism in the camera.

I had several 2G Edge Iphones and I have to say the build quality on those varied greatly. The first one I had, had an excellent, bright screen and softer rubber buttons on the side.

The next one I had, had a screen that wasn't nearly as bright, maybe a little blurry even and harder plastic-like side buttons.

I was VERY dissappointed with the quality on the second one I had. I was very surprised that Apple had allowed that to happen.

My 3G has been solid. I have no complaints. Watching the threads carefully for issues with the 3GS.

Mine has an uneven bezel and mushy home button. Seriously considering getting it replaced due to the bezel.

I've been a little disappointed as well... I've got the rattling vibrate switch, and I never noticed the sides were a little uneven until reading these neurotic posts haha.

My speakers give distorted tones when receiving calls and texts. Anyone else experience this? Seems to be a software issue because I took it back and got one with the identical problem... Same rattling switch too...
