Then restart it... I know from experience that the jailbreak and unlock process can be both intimidating and very very frustrating but in order for you to get back on track with your phone you need to calm down a bit =)

- Restart you iPhone
- Put in the SIM card that came with the phone
- Check what it says under Settings->General->About

If it says 4.0 or 4.0.1 then you're good and it should work (I have yet to find someone it DIDN'T work for).

If it says 4.0.2 then you're out of luck and will need to use your original provider until a new jailbreak/unlock comes out

It is because i am so hopeless with things like this i am paniking, my iphone is in recovery mode but i was 100% the 4.0 software
 
I did the same mistake. I updated to 4.02 and have not saved any info to downgrade. So I think we are just screwed till the new jailbreak comes out. I will use an other phone till there.

Get it out of Recovery mode/insert the SIM that originally came with the iPhone. Then check which firmware version you have, until we know there's no way we can tell for sure what you need to do
