You bought every iPhone Generation already, so you might just continue for some reason.
My iOS Devices history is
iPod Touch 1G
iPhone 3GS
iPad

Each new product was a massive upgrade, but after the iPad I don't really feel I need an iOS Phone, it's nice and all, but It's not worth 600$ nor 299$ with a 100$ data plan
If the iPhone 5 or iPhone 4G or iPhone 4GS or whatever is droolworthy enough I might get it.
The single reason for me to want the iPhone 4 was the camera, even my 3GS's Camera replaces my Point and Shoot Cam completely, I just care about a resolution to fill my computer's wallpaper, so if they upgrade the camera (which I doubt) or they add more storage I might want it

Apple will make you want it and you'll end up on the street, without money, friends, family and self-respect The Oatmeal Comic

yeah some how I do not see that happening. iPhone fanboys are going to take the crap and give apple the money no matter how small the change.

Incorrect. No one buys a product they don't want just because its a brand. People buy new things they like and want the features. Its really annoying to get all of this "fanboy" talk simply because someone gets something new.

Not to mention some of us are devs and need the updated hardware.

Skip iPhone 5 (if u own iPhone 4) an werent eligible for subsidy upgrade or have cash to burn.

Yea I definitely plan on taking a serious look at any new iPhone model this year. I previously owned the original model, and skipped the 3G and 3GS for the 4. I want to get more storage space than the 16 GB I have now. I would like for the next model to last me a couple years so I can be out of contract and look at all my options.

I wrote it in another forum but nobody complains about the Motorola Atrix when it'll be released about 6-8 months after the Droid 2 and the Droix X nor do they complain about Samsung and LG's showing of the new phone with larger screen, faster CPU, etc less than a year after their previous models. Why is Apple the only exception?

The thing is the 3g feels and acts like the 4 (OK a few small differences) which is apples wish

The 3G is way slower, and no longer supported after iOS 4.3, it runs really slow after iOS 4.0 while the iPhone 4 runs smoothly. The Retina Display is really nice and its shape and hardware are way better in the iPhone 4.

I really think the iPhone 4 is the first big step for the iPhone.

Not always. My wife went from the original iPhone to the iPhone 4. I'm with the OP, I'll skip the next iPhone as well. I don't always need the latest and greatest.

I agree with this and it's the reason why I am not waiting to get the VZ iPhone 4. The current iPhone is more than fast enough, it is the "complete redesign" already, it's gorgeous, has the best screen on the market and a fantastic camera. Whatever Apple does with the next one can't possibly make me say, wow I really NEED it. They will not include 4G, whatever improvements they make to the screen will hardly compare to the leap they already made, 8 megapixel camera? Big woop. What could they add? A USB port? A third camera? I mean...think about it...at this point the only real significant changes they could make is a bigger screen and the addition of 4G, and I'm not holding my breath for those this time around. Speed bumps, bigger storage and RAM increases are nice to have for sure, but I have no problems with any of those as they currently are for my uses.

If iPhone 5 is akin to 3GS I think many people will actually regret having waited, since by the time the 6th generation comes around (far more likely to be 4G and redesigned) they will have another year left on their contract and those of us who didn't wait will only have 2 months left. Think about it this way, could you have skipped the 3GS and get the 4 when it came out? If you think you could have I would say don't wait.

Glad you liked your 3G so much. I love FaceTime (have kids and travel). I also love the camera and video so for me the 4 is a significant improvement. I am sure apple will come up with enough new goodies to keep us all on the upgrade path.

I have sold all of my previous gen phones for $300 each so they have been cheap upgrades.

What I wonder is of the 4 will have as good resale considering the bad press.

Seems like every second phone is a big, big upgrade. Makes sense - keeps those coming off 2 year contracts interested.

2G -> 3G = not huge, same screen, camera, processor, yes it had the faster networking and GPS but it didn't feel like an entirely new phone.

2G -> 3GS = Massive upgrade, much faster, GPS and compass, much better camera, video etc.

3G -> 3GS = Good upgrade but still the same look to the handset, still has GPS etc.

3G -> 4 = Massive upgrade, huge increase in speed, retina display, HD recording, awesome camera etc.

3GS -> 4 = similar to the 3G/3GS upgrade, an improved phone all round but not the gobsmacking difference from the 3G.

3GS -> 5 = likely to be a big upgrade

4 -> 5 = likely to be improved in all areas but not going to feel as drastic a change for those moving up from a 3GS or earlier.

4 -> 6 = big one

Yeah, it seems like there are two upgrade tracks. The first track is for the folks who must have the latest tech (the iPhone 3G, the iPhone 4, presumably the LTE version with iPhone 6), and then the second track is for those who would rather wait for the refined version (3GS, iPhone 4s/5).

Incorrect. No one buys a product they don't want just because its a brand.
I know more than a handful of people that buy the cheapest clothes they can afford from a high end brand just to show that off, I know people that buy Apple products just because "It's the new apple thing"

What I wonder is of the 4 will have as good resale considering the bad press.
I think that the CDMA iPhone 4 pretty much killed the Resale value, however most companies that buy used hardware resell it in Europe or other countries where people are willing to pay more

The only one I've skipped was the 3G. I do think the every other year plan works out pretty well. BUT, as long as you're willing to constantly be locked into a contract, it's really not that expensive to keep upgrading by selling the previous model.

Iv'e had every single iphone model available here ie 3g, 3gS and 4. If I was honest the 3g would do just as well for me as the 4. I rarely use face time and the camera is OK and the retina screen isn't for me that big a deal.

So unless the 5 is compleatly revolutionary I will be waiting this time.

The thing is the 3g feels and acts like the 4 (OK a few small differences) which is apples wish but it's also a reason not to buy the next model as the ios is so portable.

The 3G is incredibly slow as experienced by myself after using a 3G for 2 years and then buying the 4. The only thing I can say is good about it compared to iPhone4 is that it's much lighter.

Another alternative, one in which I enjoy: Each year, sell you current iPhone and get the new version. This is the great thing about Apple products, they hold resale value. As your phone gets older and older, this won't be the case.

On ebay, you can easily get $500 to $575 for a descent used iPhone4 at 16GB. I know in this economy, it may not be practical for everyone...but for $100 to $200 a year, you stay in a new phone and never have a contract.

This is why I baby my phone for the year...to keep it in descent shape to sell.

This might be difficult for some...but a suggestion nonetheless.

Why does everybody say that 3G -> 3GS was such a minor upgrade?

If anything this was the biggest upgrade of the iPhone's internals since the release. The phone's CPU was upgraded from older ARM11 family to much newer and powerful Cortex-A8. I would not call that minor at all.

In comparison, 3GS->4 upgrade was relatively minor when it comes to the guts of the phone. Apple's A4 chip is almost the same Samsung made cpu that was present in 3GS, based Cortex A8 family. The biggest upgrades in 4 were the screen and the exterior design of the phone.

I would say it would make perfect sense if for iphone 5 apple switches to Cortex A9 family of cpus. Would also fit the pattern of the releases perfectly (2x ARM11 2G & 3G and 2xCortexA8 3GS & 4). A redesign now would also makes sense, because they said that LTE can't be retrofitted into the current phone. If they released a new model and and then next year just added the LTE radio, it would follow the 2G-3G upgrade scheme.
