been reading this since you posted and i cannot believe it has gone this far. I mean I do not think its that bad of a burn, but i do not think the phones plastic should have melted. But hey it makes for some cool stuff to read. Interesting,.

So you want to explain the reason you shave your legs. i remember reading it was a bet or something with friends., You might want to tell us again. as you are getting questioned about that more than anything on Gizmodo. do tell.....

I feel your pain, Literally

I know exactly how this guy feels, The EXACT same thing happened to me about 3-4 months ago with the 1 gen Iphone. I use the phone's alarm clock in the mornings, and I had it plugged in all night charging. Well when the thing started buzzing in the morning, i reached for it and seared my hand. I actually had some blisters from the metal bezzle. I called apple support and i was transfered to a specialist, much like your "Debbie", who led me through the exact set of questions, smoke, fumes, sparks, the whole bit. They sent me a new one in the mail 2 days later. She also called me every other day for the next week to check on the status of my burn. You could totally tell that they were scared that i would try to sue them, im just not the sueing type. I think i posted this on this forum somewhere, but of course my story wasnt near as detailed and documented as yours. I think you have a case against them, but personally i wouldnt take the issue that far, i didnt.

I love Apple, I really wouldn't want to sue them, I documented this just so if something happens later on from this, I have proof... and now I have a little online publicity... I didn't expect that! :D

Are you jailbroken? Maybe Zibri was right and Apple knows and pressed the breath hot dragon fire button.

I'd open the thing (2 bottom screws) and check if the battery looks warped, burned or is leaking fluid.

Anyway, don't go asleep with your iPhone in your pocket. You may turn around in sleep and break the display glass under your weight.

If you do that Apple may claim you opened it up and may of tinkered with it, causing the issue etc. So my advise is not to tinker with it, just get a replacement. ;)

The damage to the dock tells me you had something else in your pocket, like keys or coins and these have shorted out the connector.

This is exactly what I thought. I don't see what in the phone could heat the edge of the plastic around the connector. It seems reasonable something conductive and small got stuck up inside it, shorted a connection that heated, that in turn heated the object, that then melted the edge around the connector. If the battery was directly shorted this could then heat the lithium ion battery. And according to the lithium ion battery standard UL 1642, lithium ion batteries can reach up to 302 degrees F when shorted and still be approved for use in electronics. Although there may be a substandard for cell phones.

I didn't have anything else in my pocket... except for my headphones... and some park tickets...

So, could the plug for your headphones have gotten into the dock connector in any way?

Did the apple person ever call back? you ended the convo with them saying someone else was going to call. Are you going to get any free goodies?

i would think its only fair due to the deep pschological trauma it is clear you have been through.

I hope that Apple straightens this all out! I have the 3G but kept my first gen because of the cracks the 3G can get. I hope my 3G doesn't do any of this kind of stuff! I was going to sell my first gen phone but thought I should hold off to see what was going to happen with the 3G first.... cracks is one thing but burning you?

If a lot of the 3G are having problems then maybe its time that Apple starts recalling them?

Anyway... here is another link that I read about the burns on today..

1st gen iPhone battery overheats too.

My Second iPhone's (the first was replaced by Apple for extremely low phone volume) battery overheated and expanded in size, breaking the rear plastic battery cover. It was on a nightstand fortunately so I suffered no burns. I took it back to the Apple store. The geniuses there looked at me skeptically. During a thorough exam too make sure I hadn't submerged it or opened the case they discovered the popped battery pack. The replaced it and my third phone is working great.

The phone uses a Lithium Polymer battery. Symptoms of LI-POLY overcharge are "bulging" and a very hot explosion. These types of cells are used R/C Helicopters and airplances and are quite dangerous IF NOT PROPERLY CHARGED OR IF SHORTED.

Here is one example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpUXuEg3fNE

Just do a Google search for LIPO EXPLOSION.
