Forgive me for being crass.

I don't understand why some of you feel it's up to a company to replace an item that YOU broke.

Quit being boneheads and start accepting responsibility.

If I f-up my iPhone, shame on me. They're not indestructible.

Some of you sound like scam artists.

Amen, brother - preach on!

This is the mentality of entitlement we live in now days... "it's not MY fault that I dropped my iPhone in a toilet full of whatever - if Apple were a GOOD company they'd replace if for FREE!!!"

It's a ridiculous way of thinking - take some personal responsibility people! If I'm drunk and I drop my phone in my drink or I drop my phone in my kids bath-water or in the pool, etc. it's my own damned stupidity and responsibility, not the shareholders of Apple, Inc.

I took a small baking pan, put about an inch of rice in the bottom to insulate the phone from the direct heat, and cooked it for 8 hours total at about 120-130 degrees. The phone works fine now! No trace of water damage except the red half of the water sensor lit up (half white/half red now instead of all white).

Is that 120-130 ºC or ºF? I'm guessing it's fahrenheit since 120ºC for 8 hours doesn't sound realistic

trivia: if you want to get the degrees sign º, press option+0.

So here's the deal. I went for a swim...
Went to my apartment and placed the phone in front of light bulb.

1st Day
2nd Day
3rd Day
4th Day
5th day
6th Day

you sounded like you're growing plants... not a bad idea, but I can't watch paint dry (or in this case, watch the iPhone dry) for 6 days... perhaps the oven+rice method is ok but turning it around like your lightbulb method every hour or so would be better.

I saw early in the thread about the ziploc bags. While that's a good idea, iFrogz has the iBagz, which are waterproof, and you can listen to it through an external port. (Doesn't work with a recessed jack, though. If you have an extender, it will. :) ) It's great, and only like $5, and it's a LOT more durable than a ziploc bag...(Also, sound still gets out, with the speakers going. It actually sounds louder than normal. Now if you get a call, it might be hard to answer, though...

I've got an iBagz for my iPod and love it - if they would make an iPhone compatible one that you could use the external mic enabled iPhone headphones with they could sell a ton of them!

Bad luck is horrible, but 2 questions that have already been asked and you haven't answered?

Did you pay by credit card for the iphone? I believe that most credit cards offer 90 days insurance. Worth having a look at?

I have the O2 insurance which is worldwide replacement and includes water damage. I have never used it, but I'm glad I've got it for such an expensive bit of kit. (£7.50 per month)

my story

Just wanted to add my story.
I dropped my phone into a full pail of water, realized it after about 10 seconds, fished it out, and then shook it a few times and then it was still on, working fine, I quickly turned it off. Then someone picked it up while I had it off and turned it on, I said NO NO NO, but it was too late, then it cycled for about 3 hours apple logo, off, till it killed the battery. I then left it off for 24 hours and did nothing special (no rice, freezer anything) and turned it on and it works perfectly. I am still in shock!

You didn't think about trying to lie to the apple store and say it just didn't work? I doubt they could of seen that it was from water damage, they would of probably given you a new one.

sory for all the bad luck u had lately..

would really like to see a iphone from the inside though:D

do u have any pics??::confused:

Did you even read this thread?

Yeah i read most of it? He went to the apple store and said it had water damage in it, they said it didn't cover under warranty. He should of just said it broke.

What a good idea because it's Apple's fault right? What ever happened to personal responsibility and integrity?

Yeah bull ****, i doubt if that happened to you, you wouldn't try it. No one wants to pay...$499? for a new iPhone. Everyone is selfish, it's human nature.

Yeah, believe it or not, there ARE actually honest people with a smidge of integrity out there. When my wife knocked her phone in the toilet (I have no idea how), we went to the Apple Store, and basically said "it fell in water, what should we do?". We never intended on lying to try to get a new one. Like others have said, it's about accepting a little personal responsibility, which most people seem to avoid these days.

Not to say that sometimes we aren't selfish, but there's a difference between being selfish by taking more pizza than others, and being selfish by trying to rip off a company by lying.

+1 :)

I wouldn't buy any of these bulky cases unless I am going 10 under the water with my iPhone. This type of case will kill the whole iPhone "COOL Factor"

Back - been a while. Paid cash for 2 and ccard for 1, and it did not cover accidental damage due to water.

Not sure what the 2nd question you are referring to is?

OK - so jump to the first post, then come back here for the ongoing saga - soon to be a major motion picture...

So my 16GB after a few weeks begins acting up. It gets down to about 25% battery level then *poof* turns off and needs to be recharged again - -no warnings, etc.

I send to a friend who says he wants to play around with it - what do I care - it is worth $50, according to RapidRepair - haha (just assuming using the same logic as the post above).

Now, GET THIS. He takes it to an Apple Store in St. Louis. They tell him 'Water Damage. We'll replace it for $199.' So, he has a new iPhone for $199. Huh? Wha? Is there a policy? Where am I?

So I go back to BlackBerry - and I don't care how many "man, you are just stupid" posts I get after this, because I deserve them. I get a Curve and 2 weeks after I have it I am in the bathroom on the phone, set it by the sink, and as I am washing my hands it slides into the sink basin with water pouring on top of it. It is one of those sinks with smooth edges. So I grab the phone, yank out the battery, and take it apart as much as I can and lay it all out in the sun outside to dry. An hour later, I put it back together, and *Ta-Da* it works like new. Take that Apple!

OK - no details here, but I dove into the pool a month later with my BB Curve in my pocket (Flame away, I know, I know) and as soon as I realized it, jumped out, used same method as before, and *Ta-Da* works perfectly.

The first week in August I bought an iPhone 3g. That is what I am using now. BlackBerry has been moved to the reserve stand-by unit. I am so freaking paranoid about this phone and water - it is ridiculous. I really realized it yesterday when I was playing golf and it started to rain, and while everyone else was running for cover, I was running to my bag to get the phone out of my pocket, wrapped in a towel, and stuffed back into my golfbag. Haha. I guess Apple has me trained now, huh?

ur shtory really shocked me ......

ripping off apple?

to all of you who think its wrong to try and cheat apple in regards to the 2 water indicators in the iphone 3g, do you know why Apple charges 79$ to replace an Iphone battery? Becuase the ENTIRE unit costs 79$ to make, so that way when you get your battery replaced (which your not) your actually just getting a refurb/new phone and apple doesnt lose any money...

Look into Renters insurance. My iphone was damaged in a rain storm. It was covered by my Renters (Home Owners) insurance as damage to personal propery. Also, with your luck wouldn't you have peice of mind to have your other electronics covered. :)

I don't need any lectures on what I should/shouldn't have done to prevent it - it happened - I am hoping that sharing my knowledge and experience will help others - although there is no solution, I hope this post helps dispel any rumors.

Had an 8GB iPhone. Got knocked into a sink full of water. Shook it out, put in front of a fan for several hours, left in a container of rice for 2 days. The phone could receive calls, the Home button worked, it would power off and on, but the touch screen became eratic in a few days and then touchscreen didn't work at all. The indicator at the bottom of the headphone jack was red. I called Apple Care - THEY DO NOT REPAIR WATER DAMAGED PHONES ANY MORE FOR ANY PRICE. They said 'Go buy another one.' I took it to an Apple store - same thing.

So I bought a 16GB iPhone and sent the 8GB into a service called 'RapidRepair'(http://www.rapidrepair.com) I found searching on Google. They charged $10, you ship them the phone, they tell you how much it is to fix or what it is worth salvaged. They contacted me by email until the diagnosis - then they contacted me BY PHONE. They said that the insides were completely corroded and they would give me $25. I told them to send it back.

I got it back and it wouldn't even turn on. I plugged it in to charge - nothing. I decided I would take it apart - I imagined it must look pretty bad inside if it wouldn't even power on now. First thing I noticed when I got it back was that there were pry marks clearly visible on the outside top left corner where the bezel joins the case. Looking closer, it wasn't even completely closed - and I couldn't get it to close. No matter, I was going to take it apart - but that is something to note about their 'repair and diagnostic services'. I opened it with a screw driver - using a lot of force - I'm sure you can do it cleaner, but I figured I didn't have time/energy for eBay, I didn't care about be careful ripping this thing open.

For starters, the 'indicator' on the headphone jack - something I haven't seen mentioned here: It is not accessible from OUTSIDE. This is hard to explain - so let me try and draw a picture for you: imagine a coke can is your headphone jack. Now imagine the bottom of the coke can is clear - you can see through it. Now, imagine you take a white piece of paper and cover half of the bottom. Now imagine you take a white indicator strip and completely cover the bottom. So when you look down, into the can, it looks white. But what you don't know is that the bottom is CLEAR, then there is half a strip of white covering the bottom, then an indicator under that. So if it looks white/red, it didn't get THAT wet inside. If the whole thing looks red/pink, then the indicator soaked through the other white strip which means there was some significant submersion going on. It doesn't matter as I would find out later - red/white, pink/white, red/red - if it is anything but all white - tough luck. So 'sweat dripped down the headphone jack' or 'high humidity' - don't bother. It has to get WET WET WET to reach that indicator.

Now - something else I haven't seen mentioned on here - there is ANOTHER indicator on the inside of the phone. There is a thin metal backing that houses/braces the phone like a plate going almost all the way down the back of the phone above the battery - which is at the bottom. In the middle of this metal plate, stuck on it (so it is between the metal plate and the phone housing) - is ANOTHER small square indicator. So even if you DO try all these crazy ideas to 'paint' your headphone jack bottom white or whatever, as soon as someone at Apple opens it (with the RIGHT tools that don't mar the case, ReadyRepair!) they will see the other indicator, look closer at your fix - and the gig is up. I don't know what they would/could do - just letting you know there is another one inside.

So - now the part that pisses me off. I have this baby cracked open and it is spotless - I mean clean as a whistle. There are several layers of IC boards you need a little screwdriver to unscrew brackets to go from layer to layer - but there is no corrossion - nothing looks out of the ordinary. I pull out my voltage tester - that have needlepoints - and start checking to see if I can pass current through various pieces. I take it out to my workshop and put it under bright light, look at every single board - there is no corrossion. Something is fried - it obviously doesn't work, no doubt about that, but nothing I touch hesitates to pass current. I thought there was too much corrosion for ANY salvage?

Then I see something that REALLY irks me. The black wire going to the battery is broken off its soldering point. I thought maybe when I took it apart I may have done it, but I look closer and there is damage to the black wire in the middle of the wire - the insulation is 'squished'. No way - someone did not... I got a pair of needle-nose pliers and squeezed the wire and looked under my magnifier at the two different marks. Then I got REALLY REALLY mad. Draw your own conclusion to what I saw.

OK. So I am at a party St. Paddy's day, and am sitting in a chair and a staggering guy bumps my girlfriend next to me and she spills just a splash of beer - ok - a decent-sized splash, but not any crazy amount - of her beer on my phone - as I was just texting someone. Yea. Uh-huh. Same CPR routine - the phone works perfectly until it reaches about 75% of battery, then it intermittently powers itself off - you don't realize it until you go to use it. Spent about 2 hours on Apple Care support resetting phone, trying all sorts of things - my indicator is redish/pink - I don't tell them that - and they give me an RMA and send me a box to send them my phone. I get it back 3 days later (today) via FedEx with a nice little note that basically says 'Sorry your phone damage is not covered under our warranty).

So I am back to ANOTHER 8GB today (Apple has made some $$ on me, baby!) - but I have to tell you - if this one gets wet, I am going back to a BlackBerry. Flame-on, I don't care. I'm scared to death of getting this thing anywhere near liquid now - I wipe off every surface I have put it on. My BlackBerry 8700 fell in the toilet and still worked the next day for a year until I went to my 8GB iPhone on launch day last year.

16GB iPhone for sale. It has liquid-damage.

Phone in water

My wife dropped her iPhone in water. I am of the opinion that it is my responsibility to figure out how to legally replace or repair it.

So far I have been able to figure out how to open it and allow it to dry with plastic bags and rice. The water is out, and the iPhone works. But the screen is dim. I have tried using the settings to increase the brightness, and it does increase. But the images on the screen a dim, even though the screen itself is brighter. I am going to try opening it up again and allowing it to dry further, but I really think that it is about as dry as it will get.

Does anyone have any idea how to get the icons and images on the screen to return to their original luster?

I am also going to pursue the Renters Insurance option. We have a good company, but who knows if they will replace it or not.

Thanks for your help.

Just buy a replacement LCD and try that, less $100.
