I know where my money is going - a Lenovo Carbon X1 or 15 inch Surface Book 3.

I'm super jealous..
I would buy an X1 literally today if I could run macOS on it (I know - never going to happen).

I totally love that hardware and that keyboard..
my god that keyboard is heaven...

I am right there with you. If the next iteration of the MacBook Pro does not have an improved keyboard and better battery life, I am likely going to buy the X1 Carbon. I read the Laptop in a professional paradise article, and its amazing that they fit a 14inch screen into that form factor and it weighs only 2.5 pounds! I’m a lawyer, and writing and reading is mostly what I do - that 14 inch screen is glorious!

I have been with apple since 2009. Bought a MacBook Pro, and then a MacBook Air in 2013. The Air is still going strong, but I need to update my laptop. I have the 2nd generation 12.9 IPad Pro, and as much as I love it, its not a laptop replacement for me. I was hoping it would be, and I bought it right after it came out, because I didnt like the new Macbook pros, and the 12 inch Macbook is just to small (really love it, but . I mostly use Word and email, but i find it a bit harder to use Word on the IPAD pro, not to mention the inability to multitask. THis devise is great for texts, emails, I can even access my military email with the Thursby CAC reader and software, but the file app just isn’t as much of a joy to use as the laptop.

I hate to leave MacOS, I really like many of its features, not to mention a little more security than Windows will bring. I haven’t spent much time in Windows 10, I use 7 at work. But i know Id miss iMessage and just the overall beauty of MacOS. I haven’t updated to High Sierra on the Air - with reading about all the bugs, I figured I’d let it be.

I really want the MacBook Pro 13inch with 512/1TB (maybe 16GB stick) - but the keyboard is sooo important for my needs.I enjoy writing on the IPad Pro - and I use that option frequently, but I prefer a laptop over ether iPad Pro for writing, attaching files, etc.

If I don’t like what Apple releases, I will make the move to Windows - it would be easier for all my military stuff anyways, although military isn’t my full time thing. That x1 Carbon is just sooooo nice!

I just wish they'd leave some of this "innovation" from the last 2 years for the iOS line.

Some of us just want & need a bulletproof functional work tool for our MacBook and the last 2 years models have just turned too far towards fragile fashionista items vs productive, reliable, "get work done" machines.

Maybe they should take all their current models and call them MacBooks of various sizes and re-define the Pro line with a renewed focus on the aforementioned more work oriented goals and needs being the priorities over looks and new innovations.

Note: I don't mean never innovate or update, but rather don't decide to kill a previously amazingly useful and reliable keyboard and/or not use something like the Magic Keyboard in the laptops just because Ive's crew has decided thinness and "something new just because" are the most important goals above seemingly everything else

The X1 Carbon is a fantastic machine, hands down. It’s too bad that I can’t run Sketch on it.

My only other complaint about windows right now is that it doesn’t handle scaling well. At least, my surface laptop didn’t. When I would plug in my UltraWide monitor, I’d have to log out and back in every single time, or I would get these weird black bars around chrome, and text wouldn’t be sharp in apps like Brackets, or Visual Studio. Not sure what was causing all of that.

I have already dropped the Mac as a viable tool professionally. I expect such hardware to improve and assist my workflow not work directly against it. I'm a quality engineer in heavy industry (energy), it's abundantly clear to me that Apple is not targeting serious professionals with the current MacBook Pro, simply the port solution and keyboard relegate the MacBook Pro to being little more than a recreational device, with questionable reliability...

I have the Retina MacBook and agree it's very much a secondary, if not tertiary notebook outside of basic usage. Again quite frankly the keyboard is extremely poor, initially I liked the feel although in time I have grown to loath it's lack of feedback and propensity to jam.

X1 Carbon is an excellent notebook and one that is constantly at the top of my list, however my current primary project demands a far more powerful solution. Transition to W10 was not too difficult as I was already familiar and a dam site more stable for my needs which was also a major factor in "switching" just old very fast loosing work due to Apple's own applications locking up. W10 is far form perfect and does require some "taming" equally Microsoft is on a good trajectory while Apple remains fixated on "Emojis" do in little to nothing to advance the desktop OS's productivity in isolation.

You should checkout the X1 Yoga, that will solve your sketching itch :p As for the scaling beyond me why MS is not capable of resolving a seemingly basic issue, although the underpinning's are likely to be more complex, equally frustrating...

I may return to Surface with the new 15" as I do miss the Pen & Touch input, however currently a far smaller say 10" W10 tablet with KB would serve me far better as my "on the go" solution with the 17" beast remaining firmly "shackled" to the desk :p

What are some practical, non artist related, things you guys do with the W10 touch/pen input?

I have some guesses, but beyond the novelty of it, I'm curious what it excels at that you guys use that method for?

i think the main problem here is, is that it's RIDICULOUS for a keyboard replacement to cost $500. I don't care how upscale apple is.

As a point of perspective, I once had a white iBook G3 that featured a perfectly lovely keyboard—one that was very simple to remove. Nothing more required than pushing in a tab or two and the entire thin keyboard assembly came free in one's hand. Access to the Ram was underneath it.

Personally I just use the Pen for scratching notes, calculations and or rough diagraming. My daughter on the other hand is a talented artist both traditionally and digitally, so she by far get the most out of the like of the Surface Book.

As long as the 2 in 1 device is well designed the touch interface is adequate and in many respects more intuitive to use for basic tasks. The W10 interface is far from perfect, equally evolving without the forced purchase of multiple devices as Apple would want you to believe

I'll shortly pick up another Pen & Touch enabled 2 in 1 as once you realise the usefulness it's hard not to have the facility. To me 10" to 13" is the sweet spot and must be a 2 in 1, nor do typical clamshell notebooks lend to Pen & Touch input.

@turbineseaplane @Queen6 Here’s one for you. Earlier this morning the 2015 13” MacBook Pro ($1359 for the 2.9 i5/8gb/512gb) on the Apple refurb store. I saw them around 8:00pst, and by 9:00 they were gone.

I haven’t seen them on the store in a very long time. Maybe I should have jumped on it when I had the chance.... you know, as a backup to my 2017... :)

Nice, but no sale inadequate for my need. Why pay for a reworked notebook. Not really interested in Apple's history. Call us back when Apple produces a serious professional grade notebook, not the current cappuccino special ;)

I have a prediction. No more keyboards period. Nothing but a sheet of glass with a Taptic Engine underneath.

I don't discount such a suggestion by any means, potentially the near future. Makes me feel old...

The newest Thinkpads are awesome! Played with an X1 Carbon at Costco the other night and dang, that thing is sweet as apple pie. Most amazing keyboard I've ever typed on. So much so that I'm thinking of jumping off the Apple ship and getting back into the Windows world with a Thinkpad. Waiting to see what Apple does with their line of MBP's this year, however.

Don’t hold your breath on Apple changing the design of their laptop. Look at the MacBook Pro from 2012 onward. They look 90 percent the same. The only change is the inclusion of the Touch Bar. If you go into a coffee shop and look all the recent Apple laptop, you can’t really tell which year they are.

Anyway, I haven’t bought a Dell since. Not because of the HW issues, but because of the quality of support I was getting. I have an expectation that “some” failures will happen with HW, regardless of the OEM, but I also have an expectation that those same OEMs should stand behind their products, and support their customers appropriately if/when the time comes.

Same situation here. Won't consider any product by Dell. After what they did to my wife, the entire situation which I've not related, was unacceptable. I tell my friends not to consider Dell computers because of this as well.

I’ve been to all three stores here in Seattle and the employees have had nothing but praise for the new machines.

This is to be expected. Employees are loath to go against their employers. Who is to say the shopper they are talking to isn't a mystery shopper. Opening up about anything negative could get them fired. Apple employees, like any other employee, will tow the line to keep their jobs. Ex-employees can be suspect as well. Depends on how they became an ex-employee.

While forums tend to be a small percentage of a company's customer base, I view them, the forums, as a canary in the coalmine situation. If you hear chirping you should be paying attention so an informed decision can be made.
