OK thanks! I'll give the gym a go tonight... if I REALLY hate it then I'll look into getting one of these videos.

Elle MacPherson weighs more than 20 pounds? :D
Back then, she weighed 40. It was disgusting.

Anyway... all the beautiful people you're worried about? They won't be looking at you and commenting on your current state of health. They'll be looking at themselves in the mirrors.

TRY not to go in to it THINKING you'll hate it, be positive! :D
Actually, I think she's better off being honest and admitting in advance she'll hate it. In the history of mankind, no one, ever, has enjoyed starting an exercise regiment after a long period (lifetime?) of inactivity. Odds are that she won't be the first to actually like it... the first time. But, if she goes consistently, I'd bet that, by week 3, she'll be happier going than not going.

That's what I mean. Obviously it'll suck the first time, and the first few times, but you have to go in to it thinking that after a few weeks you will feels better for it, and may actually enjoy it

hehe

Somehow I don't think they'll miss me though...I go seriously RED in the face when i do the slightest bit of exercise... much like this -->

I remember when I first started doing the London street skates a couple of years ago... I looked like a glowing red beacon or something, it's so embarrassing

Don't worry, at least you don't have Asian glow. :p Ya know, how a lot of Asians turn fire engine red when they take one sip of alcohol?

good for you!! exercise will give you so much more energy! sounds backwards, but it's true:D

You know this is something I really *need* right now.

The last few days I have been feeling really, really lethargic. Have been so tired and not really feeling like myself at all; like i've had no energy to do anything. Not sure how the hell i'm gonna get through this class tonight but i'll give it a go.

aarrrgh just over 3 hrs to go...

I have to say I find the gym one of THE funniest places to go to. From the beefcakes trying to add a precious millimetre onto their biceps by lifting the equivalent of a small car, to the obviously preening "beautiful" people who don't want to break a sweat as that would ruin their outfit.
My advice ??? Start VERY slowly. I reckon 99% of gym goers actually work out too hard. Start off by doing something pretty easy ( if you can borrow a heart rate chest strap I would ) For the first few visits, aim for a level of exercise where it is still possible to hold a conversation. If you go from doing nothing to a tough aerobics class it will be a rude shock to your body and it WILL hurt, meaning you are much less likely to be able or want to go back again. November's a good time to start. Gym's are pretty empty at this time of year before all the January one timers turn up. I see you've done a bit of skating before ???? Try and do some more of that. I know the weather's not great at this time of year but when it gets better in spring try to do as much of your exercise outside as possible. A hour's skating in the park will be much better than plodding on a treadmill watching the rubbish on MTV.
My best fitness tip ??? Buy a bike.

Good luck tonight. Enjoy it and laugh at how a lot of people there take themselves a little bit too seriously.

Oh I just got back to this thread....Elle MacPherson had gained 20 pounds for her role in the movie Sirens.....I never saw this movie either but she needed to lose it to get back down to a size zero I assume! LOL She is hilarious in the video too, I think Karen even makes fun of her a few times by giving some looks about the comments she makes. Elle just sounds like a dumb ass at times and talks about her ass being too big!! :p

so what's a size zero? a piece of thread?

UK sizes start at size 8 in most shops (equivalent to a US 4) and occasional shops (mostly aimed at teens) now also carry a 6. A size zero therefore must be kiddie clothing.

Hmm.. The first time I ever went to a gym - one of those personal-consultation-try it out things, I was coming off a virus, and the d^mb-@$$ trainer guy whipped me through all of the machines like a Marine and had me doing reverse crunches (where you lay with your upper body suspended over space and have to use your gut muscles to lift yourself up horizontal, hold, and lower down again.) I woofed my cookies all over the place. D^mb-@$$.

Take it easy to start, DCV... build up slowly to a "respectible" level of activity.

The sad thing is that I started reading this while eating a deep dish slice of pizza. All of a sudden I feel fat, and have discarded the pizza. I think I'll go on a walk. Thanks for the motivation dietcoke.

Edit: Well, maybe one more slice....

Nothing else matters aside from the fact that you have made the commitment to do somthing about your weight. dont worry about the class nazi. you will find it alot easier to stick to the regimen with a guy yelling at you than not, thats what they are there for. Its soooo easy to cheat when you are alone at home with a video.
