I Survived!!!!!

But my god that was hard... I've just worked muscles I never knew I had.

I was already aching part way through the warm-up. There were bits that i could do and didn't find too difficult and then other parts where i felt completely lost... those were mostly the bits where you're lying down - as if you haven't done it before you find you're craning your neck to see what the instructor/other people are doing. There were a couple of other n00bs there, which put my mind at ease at the beginning, though they had been to other gyms before.

So yeah, I was the dunce of the class but afterwards the instructor said she was really impressed that i'd never been to a gym before and i (apparently) didn't do too badly in the class. Yeah yeah, i know, they say these things to encourage you to come back. Well it worked... i signed up for a membership  !!! Got to go back tomorrow lunchtime for an induction and then at some point i'll have some personal training sessions...

I'm definitely gonna give that pump class another go :)

I *never* thought i'd say that.

Here's another thing i *never* thought I'd say: I'm gonna need more lycra

Am seriously aching though already and i've been warned that tomorrow/Wed will probably hurt a lot more :(

Thanks to everyone for posting your words of support earlier (apart from Blue Velvet of course :p hehe j/k)

Am feeling strangely happy now... even though i'm in PAIN!

Well done indeed. A warm bath should help those aching muscles.
I thought pro athletes actually sit in ice baths. Keeping properly hydrated helps w/ making sure that lactic acid doesn't get the best of you. :p

Exercise induced euphoria. A natural defensive mechanism against the other natural defense mechanism that goes "OOOW WTF did I do THAT for".

The pain will be forgotten before the pleasurable glow is forgotten. Otherwise as a species we'd never have made it. The males would have said; this chasing antelopes business, it hurts too much, sod it, I'm eating weeds instead. And of course, all families would have been single-child.... ;)

Pour yourself a long hot bath. Need to relax those muscles before they stiffen up. This can actually be a positive reinforcement: hot bubblebath = reward for working out.

Edit: Ice is best for injury and inflammation, yes. Ice bath however is not postive reinforcement.
If you pull a muscle, cool it, don't heat it.

Yay! Nicely done. :) Much kudos for going. I'm glad it was good, and I'm impressed that you went to a class called Body Pump. At the mention of those words, I'd be out the door....:D

I have never dared go to a gym, but I did start running a year or two ago, which for a unfit asthmatic was no mean feat. It was great, I could breathe, and I could eat anything! But then I stopped, and continued to eat anything. :( Although obviously, now it's far too cold to start again....:D That's the adavntage of a gym, it's warm!

You have inspired me to start again though, so if it doesn't snow, maybe I will...

Cheers guys... endorphins indeed... i'm still grinning!!

When i got there it was horrendously busy... absolutely heaving in the main machines area. I felt so uncomfortable and was almost straight back out the door! But the classes were down the hall and the pump class must have been only about 20 people, with only one bloke in it. And there really were all shapes and sizes there, not just the skinny 'beautiful' types I'd been expecting (they were mostly on the machines). I walked past the spinning room where they had an 'RPM' class... now THAT looked horrendous; everyone had sweat pouring off them. Eeewwww... not my cup of tea. I think i'll stick to pump for now :)

Oh and Lau - do it do it do it!

....well I don't want to say I told you so, but...I can't think of any other way to finish this sentence :D

Maybe I will.... Although if I go running tomorrow, and slip on some ice and fall in the canal and die, well, we'll know who to blame....;)

Dang, I was working too hard today and missed all of the fun banter this morning. Glad to hear everything went well with your classes this evening - and you're right, tomorrow will be worse, but try and find some kind soul who would be willing to give you a massage and it'll all be better.

I think joining a class is a fantastic way to start because it helps you to learn the proper training techniques. After that, you can branch out on your own and drop the gym membership.

I've set up a gym at home, which is used fairly often (though not as frequently as I'd like :() and is quite convenient. But I had to get to the point where I was self-motivated, so I went to gyms for a long time before doing the home-gym thing.

good on you for going.

i think just about everyone's intimidated the first time they head into the gym...then you see that most of the people there are just regular folks just trying to do something positive for themselves. it's strangely reassuring to see that there's always people who suck more than you do at stuff...:D

you'll enjoy your time with the personal trainer...they'll help you put together a program that fits your criteria and show you proper form for the exercises to minimize your risk of injury.

just take it easy on yourself and listen to your body. if something hurts ( not just fatigue) then give it a rest. and don't be down on yourself if you have an off day--i've been working out for 3 years and still have days where my strength or coordination just sucks. of course, jelloshotsrule will say thats just because i'm an old codger. ( which is, sadly, mostly true...)

The day after...

After the euphoric state, comes the pain :(

Didn't feel *too* bad this morning... my neck and legs were hurting a bit but not aching anywhere near as badly as I was expecting.

However... I had to go to an 'orientation' meeting at lunchtime and afterwards the guy made me go on an elliptical trainer.

Well i gotta buy a vowel because - OH. MY. GOD. The PAIN.

And apparently it'll be worse tomorrow.

Forget everything i said last night. Exercise is EVIL. I demand a refund!

I'm telling you, get a massage :p

Really, it will help. And don't worry - it gets better. The aches will start to diminish, and eventually you'll look forward to the slight pain you'll feel the day after a workout because you'll know it's doing you some good.

At least give it a couple of months before you write it off.
