Blue iPhone

Just got an iPhone 3g and noticed the blue tint in the sun as well. I tried to take some pictures... so here they are. (sorry for the bad pictures)

iPhone on my desk, indoors.

Blue or black?:D

Blue or black?:D

Yeah, as someone else said, that's the SKY.

The black is shiney. It reflects stuff. It's reflecting the sky right there. It absorbs some of it, though, leaving it more purple than blue. Here's a test. Flip it over so the black part is facing the ground. I bet it won't look so purple/blue anymore.

If it ain't light leak on the white ones, now they will be returned because the black back is not "Black enough"! Poor Apple.

Interesting. Sunlight can really change the appearance of things. My white iPhone 3G looks much more...white...if that makes sense, when it's outside. Like a stark white.

This obviously means the phone has reached a level of coolness. Much like a can of Coors Light, in which the "mountains" on the can turn blue when it has reached a state of cold perfection, so does the iPhone. Maybe you should consider not storing it in your freezer.

This is obviously a joke lol

You are wrong, additive color involves light. Red, green and blue. When they are combined it forms white light. The light must be illuminated/emitted by the source.

Subtractive, used in pigments and dyes, are made up of Cyan, Magenta, Yellow. This forms black. The color is formed by absorbing wavelengths and reflecting others.

You, sir, have a very funny name for someone talking about light! :p

Yeah, as someone else said, that's the SKY.

:p

I can just see the threads now:

"Why is the back of my iPhone gray, and rainy?"
"Why is the back of my iPhone black, but with tiny white dots and a big round circle?"
"Why is there a big aeroplane flying across the back of my iPhone?!?"

Ok I was a bit curious so I took some pics...

I see you're using a white iPhone 3G to take the pics. What's the color of that one if you hold it in the sun? :)

I believe it's a dark blue while the front plastic is more like a dark purple. Realistically unless you're in direct sunlight you can't tell, so really who cares

My 3G also looks dark blue/purple in bright sunlight.

It doesn't matter to me as here in the UK we've only had about 2 half days sun anyway!

A friend of mine says he's black, but he looks brown to me.I don't have he heart to tell him, since he's very sensitive.

The blue/purple tint is actually caused by the clear coat that is put over the plastic post-moulding. The intensity of light falling on the phone is proportional to the amount of reflected blue/purple light.

For whatever it's worth, I've noticed this with my phone and my girlfriends as well. I like it. A deep navy is much nicer than the black anyway, so I can deal with it.
