I don't know what happened or if this is normal... i was playing with it for a bit, just got it yesterday and was just sitting down for the first time. watched about 30 seconds on netflix, tried to call someone with a german name on siri, set the phone down, came back and the white apple was there.

is this normal? do i need to do something? i haven't even run the battery down from its first full charge yet, though i did update to 5.0.1 this morning. maybe it is settling in?

My iPad 2 reset twice the first week I got it back in March, after those two times it has never done it again.

If you go to Settings> General> About> Diagnostics & Usage> Diagnostics & Usage Date, is their a Crash report?

I've had it happen before (both with my iPad and iPhone 4). I wouldn't worry.

No matter how solid the OS is when you have various 3rd party apps running it's bound to happen from time to time.

It's been very rare for me. Maybe in the 7 months I had my iPhone 4 it happened 3x, and my iPad I've only noticed it once or twice when using it. I mean if it happened other times I wasn't aware.

I wouldn't worry about it. my 3GS crashes practically every two days. All I need for it to crash is to take a picture with a lot of apps running and my phone will restart.

FWIW, I had three random restarts within a few days and checked my log. I had several kernel panics. Went to the Apple Store and they replaced my phone without question.
