I can't wait for my new MacBook Pro. I'll have to hook it into my 20" display for games since it will be better than my PowerMac G5. I can't wait to play Crysis and COD4 in the comfort of my own... dorm room. I've had to go over to my girlfriend's to play them.

Good to hear, ever since I sold my xbox360 I've been missing the orange box. Can't wait for Spore and Starcraft 2.

Anyways, I've been thinking about buying a MBP (my last mac was a g4 powerbook) as soon as I can (maybe by the summer) and I was worried whether or not Pros can handle graphic heavy games.

I thought the same thing when I was considering my MBP, so I thought I'd write this to help people out. :)

Will the current 2.5 15" be able to handle Starcraft 2 on high settings? I dont think starcraft is usually graphics demanding but what u think?

I'd guess that it should be able to run it very well. Blizzard typically doesn't make very graphically advanced games. I'd say that if your computer can handle WoW (and TBC/WotLK), it should run Starcraft. Remember that Blizzard always comes out with native Mac versions of their games, and (at least in WoW, recently) sometimes include perks for Mac users. Mac WoW has a video recording function build in.

Cool, sounds great. I can't wait to get mine in the mail!

What version of windows are you using for gaming?

XP SP2. Vista sucks if you want to game. Actually, Vista sucks all around.

If you've got Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance, I'd love to know how it runs on the new MBP's.

I'm downloading it now. PM me (so that I'll remember) and I'll either PM you back, or leave a reply here when I get it. Either way, I'll let you know.

Great...juuuuuuuuuuuust great. I was anxious for my new 2.6-17" H-R to get in.............and after reading the OP's review on how it did w/ TF2, now I'm freakin' ultra excited and now this weekend, next week, and next weekend is going to suck even more waiting for it to get here...haha...

This thread made my day! :)

PS...I'm currently TF2'ing on an HP zv6000...it's a champ for being almost 3 years old, but it's time. It's time for something newer.

:D

Have fun! All Source engine games will run beautifully on the MBP. Don't be afraid to max out the settings (even AA!). I think you'll enjoy your new Mac!

wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong!

The only reason they list the in-stock date as 12/08 is because they have no clue and they have to put something into their computer system.

If you go to the blizzard forums and search for "release date" you will see that the chief designer of sc2 or someone else high up stated that starcraft 2 will NOT be released in 2008, and NOT be ready for the christmas 2008 rush. I'm sorry to give everyone such bad news, but it's coming in 2009. On the brighter side, the zerg page is rumored to be released in March (oh wait, that's in 2 hours :))

...And if you would have read farther down at my next post you would have seen the part where I said "it's probably just a placeholder" and "it's more likely for 2009 or later".

So, my powerbook g4 finally died a couple weeks ago. Last wednesday, I bought a 17" Macbook Pro. I knew I could get the new model if a new one came out, and I needed it for school, so I just bought it then. 17", 1920x1200 hi-res, 250gb hdd, 2.4ghz. I received it Monday, and I loved it. I decided I'd call Applecare just to make sure I wouldn't be charged a 10% restocking fee if new ones came out tuesday, and a nice woman assured me I would be taken care of, and there would be no fee. She said she was making an exception, because customized laptops usually have no return policy, but IF a new one come out, then they do.

The next day, the new MBPs came out. They had the 250gb hdd standard, an 8600m gt videocard with 512 mb vram, and a faster processor. Also, my favorite, MULTITOUCH. I called apple as soon as I got home and the man I talked to told me I had to pay a 10% restocking fee. I just told him that I had talked to someone the day before, and he checked the records, and waived the fee. I customized the new MBP with a hi-res display, and it's being shipped today or tomorrow (hopefully). He told me I can continue using the previous MBP until the new one arrives.

Now, about the actual computer: it's fast. Crazy fast. It runs Mac OS X better than any computer I've used before, and it runs Windows faster than any computer I've used before. I've played a few games on it (TF2, Portal, COD4), and they run AMAZINGLY. I can run COD4 (a very graphically challenging game) at native resolution (1920x1200), high texture settings, anti-aliasing 4x, and all the "extras" turned on without a single stutter. It's flawless. TF2 runs the same way, as does Portal. I may be able to get Crysis soon, and I'm thinking it may actually run at full res (I wasn't expecting it to).

In short: It's a great gaming computer, Apple support rocks, and it's worth every penny.

You're right about Apple support!

Did you try Crysis, World in Conflict, and or UT3 yet? Would like to see how those demanding titles perform.

I'm going to set up bootcamp with XP this weekend and see.

I cant wait for my puppy to arrive!!! I traded my 15" SR in for the 17" high res 2.5ghz 4GB!! I mostly play CSS and that ran like a breeze on the 15! It dïdnt even break a sweat.
I guess its time to throw something more demanding @ it. Looks like ill be giving crysis a go.

underneath my name it says 'newbie' so don't handle me too roughly when i ask my question.

BUT where are you guys getting all these games for the mac (bf2, world in conflict, etc)? i go online to the apple store and check the games that they have there and i don't see anything as cool as those ones (blech bf2142!) and i went to other sites like gamespot.com and ebgames.com but i can't seem to find any mac games there either.

they're talking about the reason i finally gave up the pc ghost: "Boot Camp"

it's a mac program that allows you to install windows and dual boot--you choose which OS you boot into. so if you boot into windows, download your nvidia gfx drivers, and install your fav pc game... you're all set. and then once you're done, no dealing with windows- boot back to OS X

Thanks fsckminix6. So you have to buy Windows separately correct? Or can I use my OEM copy of XP that my PC is running on my Mac?

I've used an OEM Dell XP SP2 with no issues. Other manufacturers may be different?

I think SC2 will be on about the same level as World in Conflict and C&C3...combine the two and you'll get SC2. I have the new MBP with the 512 mb vram, etc and I think I will be okay, if I can run Crysis on High, I can run SC2...

Those are PC titles, but since we can Bootcamp and run Windows on the Mac then we can play all these games on the Mac.:D

This is illegal if you use the same serial number.

The number Dell uses on the new PC's is a manufacturer's #. I used the number from the back of the tower (it is different). This number had never been used and activated w/o any issues. The mentioned PC that it came from has been retired (bad caps on mobo).

Just a quick question...

Why are people using XP on a machine with a GPU that supports DX10?

From the post on this thread, most of you are playing games that support DX10 yet you're running XP. Would it not be more graphically enjoyable to stretch the machines legs with DX10 in Vista? Granted its the sux, but I run Vista on my Desktop and MBP solely for that purpose.

Then that's not illegal, I just didn't want him to think you could use the dell serial number and disc and everything would be hunky-dory.

Do you guys think that the 2.4ghz low end MBP will be able to handle some of the high end games without upgrading the ram to 4GB or do you think its necessary because of the 256MB video card?

Wow powerful gaming performance there. Out of interest how hot did it get running COD4 at that res with 4xAA ?

Not too hot. It was noticeably warm, but nothing that bothered me. I havent felt the bottom, or the part in front of the keyboard, but I'm sure those get pretty hot.

The new MBP is cooler, too.

Does anyone have reliable benchmarks in which the old MBP and the new one are compared?
2.2 GHz SR with a 128MB 8600m GT versus 2.4 GHz Penryn with 256MB would be greatly appreciated.

Does the new MacBook Pro posses a 8600m GT with a higher clock than the SantaRosa one does?

Currently I have a PC with a 8800GT card in it. The problem is that I do not play very often. .... seldom to be more precise.
Because of this fact I'd like to sell my PC and buy a new MBP instead with 256 or 512Megabytes of Video-Ram.

Thank you!

I think you are right, but I think that the requirements will be even lower than Crysis on high, as Crysis is an eye candy game made to be played on the top hardware out there.

If you've got Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance, I'd love to know how it runs on the new MBP's.

SupCom: Forged Alliance is a very CPU and RAM heavy game, and MBP has the best of booth (especially when you have 4 GB of memory). The new MBP is gonna play it well, because I can play it reasonably on a very old desktop of mine (Athlo64, single core, 2GHz, 1.5 GB RAM and Radeon 1800XL) and MBP beats it in every single way.

Havent seen this anywhere...

but has anyone seen a improvement from the 256mb to the 512mb in games?

Such as crysis,world in conflict,half life2?

In texture heavy games there usually is a difference and also in high resolutions, however I can't tell you how much at the moment. Try googling, I bet there are some comparison tests (I think that Nvidia 8800 GT was made in both 256 and 512 MB versions, so try that)
